Both move a wide range of freight, but they publish different financial categories and operating measures, so their headline revenue and service statistics are not direct like-for-like comparisons. For a shipper, the useful question is which carrier and connections can serve the specific origin, destination, commodity, and service plan.
What is the difference between Union Pacific and CSX?
Union Pacific Railroad is the principal operating railroad of Union Pacific Corporation. Its 2025 Form 10-K describes a network of 32,889 route miles across 23 states in the western two-thirds of the United States. CSX Transportation, the principal operating railroad of CSX Corporation, describes an approximately 20,000-route-mile system serving major population centers in 26 states east of the Mississippi River, Washington, D.C., and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec.

Those descriptions establish a broad west–east distinction, not a simple choice between two interchangeable nationwide networks. Union Pacific connects Pacific and Gulf Coast ports with Midwest and eastern gateways and offers corridors to Mexico and Canada through gateways and connections. CSX has extensive access across the eastern U.S. and to ports on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, the Mississippi River, the Great Lakes, and the St. Lawrence Seaway. Connections with other railroads and regional operators extend each railroad’s reach beyond the tracks it operates itself.
Both companies serve overlapping freight industries, including agriculture, chemicals, automotive, intermodal, and industrial products. But their networks, business categories, and reported service metrics differ. A broad map or a national revenue figure cannot establish whether a railroad can handle a particular shipment or which option will meet a shipper’s timing and cost requirements.

Which states does Union Pacific serve, and where does CSX operate?
Union Pacific: western and central network with gateway connections
Union Pacific’s 2025 Form 10-K reports 32,889 route miles in 23 states at December 31, 2025. The company describes its network as covering the western two-thirds of the country and linking Pacific and Gulf Coast ports with Midwest and eastern gateways. It also says it serves all six major Mexico gateways and has corridors to Canadian gateways.
That reach should not be read as a claim that Union Pacific owns every track between a customer’s facility and a distant port or destination. The company describes coordinated schedules with other rail carriers for freight moving to and from the Atlantic Coast, Southeast, Southwest, Canada, and Mexico. A shipment can therefore involve another railroad, an interchange, trackage rights, or other arrangements in addition to Union Pacific’s own operated network. The availability and routing of a specific service need to be checked with the carrier.
CSX: eastern U.S. network with Canadian and port access
CSX’s 2025 Form 10-K describes approximately 20,000 route miles serving major population centers in 26 states east of the Mississippi, the District of Columbia, and Ontario and Quebec. CSX reports access to more than 70 ocean, river, and lake port terminals, including those on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, Mississippi River, Great Lakes, and St. Lawrence Seaway.
CSX also describes connections to thousands of production and distribution facilities through other Class I carriers and approximately 250 short-line and regional railroads. Its network is eastern, but a shipment’s reach is not defined solely by the company’s own route miles: partner connections may carry freight beyond the CSX-operated system. That does not mean CSX itself operates a western U.S. network.

| Network feature | Union Pacific | CSX |
|---|---|---|
| Reported route miles | 32,889, across 23 states in the western two-thirds of the United States (Union Pacific 2025 Form 10-K; network at December 31, 2025) | Approximately 20,000, serving 26 states east of the Mississippi, Washington, D.C., Ontario, and Quebec (CSX 2025 Form 10-K) |
| Ports and gateways described | Pacific and Gulf Coast ports; Midwest and eastern gateways; corridors to Canadian and Mexican gateways, including all six major Mexico gateways served by UP | Access to more than 70 ocean, river, and lake port terminals on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, Mississippi River, Great Lakes, and St. Lawrence Seaway (CSX 2025 Form 10-K) |
| Connections beyond its own network | Coordinated schedules and connections with other carriers for movements to and from eastern, southern, Canadian, and Mexican destinations | Connections to thousands of facilities through other Class I carriers and approximately 250 short-line and regional railroads |
Route-mile figures describe the scale of company networks, not the distance a specific shipment will travel, the number of customers served directly, or the amount of track a company owns without qualification. A system map can help orient a reader to the broad east–west difference, but it cannot confirm service at an individual siding, terminal, or origin-to-destination lane.
Which railroad is bigger?
“Bigger” depends on the measure. By the route-mile figures in their respective 2025 Form 10-Ks, Union Pacific reports the larger network: 32,889 miles versus CSX’s approximately 20,000 miles. Those figures use company descriptions and are not themselves a measure of shipment capacity, speed, service quality, or access to every location in a region.
By reported revenue, Union Pacific reported $23.220 billion in 2025 freight revenues. CSX reported $14.1 billion in 2025 total revenue. The totals are not identical accounting categories: Union Pacific’s figure is specifically freight revenue, while CSX’s total includes a trucking business reported through Quality Carriers. The amounts are useful as company-reported scale indicators, but they should not be treated as a perfectly matched comparison or as a measure of which carrier is better for a particular shipper.

Union Pacific groups its 2025 freight revenue into Bulk, Industrial, and Premium. CSX reports merchandise, intermodal, coal, trucking, and other revenue. Their taxonomies do not line up one-for-one: for example, Union Pacific places finished automobiles and intermodal in Premium, while CSX reports intermodal separately and includes automotive in Merchandise. CSX also reports trucking separately. The following figures describe each company’s own reporting categories, not directly comparable market shares.

| Company-reported category | 2025 reported revenue | Share of company-reported total | Examples or scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Union Pacific: Bulk | $7.586 billion | 33% of UP freight revenue | Grain and grain products, fertilizer, food and refrigerated products, coal, and renewables |
| Union Pacific: Industrial | $8.604 billion | 37% of UP freight revenue | Chemicals and plastics, metals and minerals, forest products, petroleum and LPG, soda ash, sand, and specialized markets |
| Union Pacific: Premium | $7.030 billion | 30% of UP freight revenue | Finished automobiles, auto parts, and domestic and international intermodal freight |
| Union Pacific: total freight revenues | $23.220 billion | 100% | Union Pacific 2025 Form 10-K |
| CSX: Merchandise | $8.8 billion | 62% of CSX revenue | Chemicals, agriculture and food, automotive, minerals, forest products, metals and equipment, and fertilizers |
| CSX: Intermodal | $2.1 billion | 15% of CSX revenue | Rail freight connected with truck transfers and terminals |
| CSX: Coal | $1.9 billion | 13% of CSX revenue | Coal business |
| CSX: Trucking | $816 million | 6% of CSX revenue | Reported through Quality Carriers |
| CSX: Other revenue | Not separately stated in the cited category summary | 4% of CSX revenue | CSX 2025 Form 10-K category summary |
| CSX: total revenue | $14.1 billion | 100% | CSX 2025 Form 10-K; the total includes the trucking category |
Union Pacific’s percentages are shares of freight revenue, not shares of cars, tonnage, or total shipments. Likewise, CSX’s category percentages describe its own revenue mix. They should not be used to infer that one railroad carries a larger physical volume of a given commodity without matching data and definitions.
For a shipper, the categories can still provide context. A company shipping grain, chemicals, finished vehicles, coal, or intermodal containers can see that both railroads describe relevant lines of business, but that does not establish that both serve the shipper’s facility or offer the same equipment and routing. CSX says its intermodal service connects rail and trucks through approximately 30 terminals serving major markets east of the Mississippi. Whether that transfer model fits a shipment depends on its origin, destination, handling needs, and service plan.
Do Union Pacific and CSX have comparable service performance?
Not from the headline figures alone. The companies publish different operating measures and definitions. Union Pacific’s 2025 Form 10-K reports average train speed, freight-car velocity, and terminal dwell. CSX reports train velocity, dwell, on-time originations and arrivals, and trip-plan performance. Even terms that sound similar may be calculated differently, so a simple ranking can mislead.
| Company measure | 2025 reported value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Union Pacific average train speed | 24.3 miles per hour | UP’s company-reported average train speed; it is not the same named metric as CSX train velocity |
| Union Pacific freight-car velocity | 225 daily miles per car | UP’s reported car-velocity measure within its own performance framework |
| Union Pacific average terminal dwell | 20.9 hours | UP’s reported average terminal dwell; definitions and measurement methods should be checked before comparison |
| CSX train velocity | 18.4 mph | CSX’s train-velocity measure; not directly interchangeable with UP’s average train speed |
| CSX dwell | 10.3 hours | CSX’s company-reported dwell figure; do not compare as if definitions and methods necessarily match UP’s |
| CSX on-time originations | 72% | CSX-reported percentage; read with CSX’s definition and reporting qualifications |
| CSX on-time arrivals | 61% | CSX defines an on-time arrival as arrival within two hours of scheduled time |
| CSX carload trip-plan performance | 78% | CSX-reported trip-plan measure |
| CSX intermodal trip-plan performance | 91% | CSX-reported trip-plan measure |
| CSX cars online | 125,379 | CSX-reported statistic; this is a reported count, not a direct service-quality score |
CSX says certain statistics are estimates that may be updated as actual results settle. It also says its methods for velocity, dwell, cars online, and trip-plan performance differ from Surface Transportation Board methods. The company-reported figures are therefore best understood within CSX’s own definitions and reporting framework. Union Pacific’s measures should likewise be read as UP’s measures, not as a standardized cross-railroad scorecard.

Train speed and train velocity, car velocity, dwell, and on-time performance answer different questions. Results may be affected by network structure, traffic mix, scheduled services, congestion, and how each company defines and measures the metric. Neither set of figures by itself proves which railroad will provide better service for a particular shipment. For a meaningful comparison, ask about the same origin-to-destination lane, the same shipment type, a stated service commitment, and consistent transit-time and performance definitions over the same period.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should a shipper compare the two for a freight move?
Start with the lane, not the corporate footprint. A railroad’s national map, annual revenue, or overall operating statistics cannot substitute for confirmation that it can serve the exact facility and route under the shipper’s requirements. A practical comparison should cover these six points.
- Confirm origin and destination access. Give each carrier the precise locations, including facility or siding details where relevant. Ask whether it serves both ends directly or whether the move requires a connecting carrier, short line, terminal transfer, or other arrangement. Company system maps show broad coverage, not lane-specific availability.
- Describe the commodity and shipment size. State what is moving, the expected volume and frequency, and whether it is a single-car shipment, a unit train, or another arrangement. Ask what equipment is available and whether the commodity has handling or service requirements that affect routing.
- Decide whether the move is rail-only or intermodal. For containerized or truck-connected freight, identify the origin and destination drayage needs, terminal access, and transfer points. CSX describes approximately 30 intermodal terminals serving major markets east of the Mississippi; terminal presence alone does not establish a suitable route or capacity for a given shipment.
- Identify the relevant port, border, and interchange gateways. If the shipment crosses a coast, border, or connection to another railroad, ask which gateway and interchange would be used and which carrier handles each part of the route. UP describes corridors and connections to Canadian and Mexican gateways, including all six major Mexico gateways it serves; CSX describes access to more than 70 port terminals and service in Ontario and Quebec. Those broad capabilities do not by themselves establish a specific routing.
- Request the lane-specific service plan. Compare scheduled transit time, frequency, consistency, interchange arrangements, and the service commitment that applies to the actual lane. If discussing on-time or trip-plan performance, confirm what the metric means, what time window it uses, and whether the companies are measuring the same period and type of movement.
- Obtain costs and contract terms directly from the carrier. The public 2025 annual filings do not provide customer-specific freight rates or determine which carrier can serve a particular lane. Ask for a quote and the applicable service, volume, equipment, accessorial, and contract terms for the exact movement.
This process helps separate two different questions: whether a railroad can physically and operationally participate in the movement, and whether the resulting routing, service, and commercial terms fit the shipper’s needs. A connection may make a destination reachable without making the shipment a single-carrier move, and an apparently nearby main line does not guarantee access to a customer facility.
What does the proposed Union Pacific–Norfolk Southern transaction mean for CSX?
The proposed transaction is relevant context for the U.S. rail network, but CSX is not a party to it. The Surface Transportation Board’s transaction page says Union Pacific Corporation, Union Pacific Railroad Company, Norfolk Southern Corporation, and Norfolk Southern Railway filed a revised application on April 30, 2026, seeking authority for Union Pacific to acquire control of Norfolk Southern and consolidate their rail operations.

As of the STB page’s last update on August 19, 2026, the application was under regulatory review, not an approved or completed merger. The STB page describes the applicants’ proposed combined system as approximately 50,000 miles across 43 states, counting lines over which the applicants have trackage rights. That projected footprint is contingent on authorization and is not Union Pacific’s currently operated 2025 network. The STB describes the proposal as mostly end-to-end, with existing UP and Norfolk Southern systems overlapping in Missouri and Illinois.
For a current carrier comparison, keep the two things separate: Union Pacific and CSX’s 2025 company-reported networks are the operating footprints described above, while the approximately 50,000-mile UP–Norfolk Southern system is a proposed figure from a transaction subject to regulatory review. The proposal does not make CSX a participant.
How to read the companies’ stated goals
Company statements explain management’s priorities, but they are not independent evidence that a railroad has achieved a particular level of service. Union Pacific’s 2025 Form 10-K says, “Service is all about delivering what we sold our customers,” in its discussion of the company’s service strategy. CSX CEO Steve Angel wrote in CSX’s March 30, 2026 release about its 2025 annual report that the company’s objective was to build CSX into the best-performing railroad in North America, measured by safety, service reliability, cost efficiency, and returns on shareholder capital. These are corporate statements of strategy and ambition, not comparable performance findings.

There is no national winner that follows from route miles, revenue, or the service statistics published in the two filings. Union Pacific’s larger reported route-mile total does not make it the best choice for an eastern lane, just as CSX’s eastern reach does not establish that it can serve a western origin directly. The decision turns on whether the exact route is available, what connections and transfers it needs, what equipment and shipment size are involved, what service commitment is offered, and what the carrier quotes for the move.
For financial readers, company revenue and freight mix offer context about each railroad’s scale and business composition, not a lane-level procurement answer or a direct measure of service quality. The 2025 figures also use different reporting scopes, particularly Union Pacific’s freight revenue compared with CSX’s total revenue including trucking. They are not, on their own, a basis for concluding which railroad is the better shipping option or making an investment decision.
