You can shop for unclaimed luggage and the merchandise pulled from it at Unclaimed Baggage, 509 West Willow Street, Scottsboro, Alabama 35768. The store is the one the headline refers to. It is a destination shop rather than a dependable source for a particular brand, size or bargain, because what is on the shelves changes constantly. Company figures below are attributed to Unclaimed Baggage unless noted, and the museum details come from a 2023 Alabama Tourism announcement.

Two things shape the experience. First, no specific item, model, size or price can be promised, since stock rotates with each batch of reclaimed goods. Second, the selection is not a set catalog. A shopper who needs one particular item will often leave empty-handed, while a shopper who enjoys browsing for the unexpected may find the trip worthwhile.
How unclaimed bags reach the store
According to the company, Unclaimed Baggage has purchasing agreements for unclaimed items with domestic airlines and other travel and transportation companies. It says a checked bag must go through an extensive three-month search before it is deemed orphaned. The company states that less than 0.03% of checked luggage becomes unclaimed. That share is the company’s own figure, not an independently audited industry statistic.
Once a bag is released to the store, the company describes a four-stage process:

The Unclaimed Baggage Museum
Alabama Tourism announced the Unclaimed Baggage Museum in 2023 and said it opened on April 21, 2023, with more than 70 unusual items on display. The state tourism announcement, dated April 5, 2023, is the source for those details. The museum is not a new or upcoming attraction. Its opening date and exhibit count describe its launch, and the current display may differ.
Bryan Owens, CEO of Unclaimed Baggage, described the store in the same announcement: “Our store is like an archeological dig, with unclaimed treasures telling stories about people and culture over time and from all parts of the world.” The spelling is as printed in the announcement. Owens also described the museum work as ongoing: “It’s a work in progress, as we often discover new facts about the artifacts that we have. The continuous discovery is part of the fun!”

Buying online and picking up in Scottsboro
Online orders can be picked up free at the Scottsboro store, according to the official FAQ. The steps are:
- Place your order through the store’s online shop.
- Wait for the “Ready for Pick Up” email. Do not drive to the store before you receive it.
- Go to 509 West Willow Street during published hours and collect your order.
- Note the holding period. The FAQ says orders are held for 10 days after they are marked ready.
Because online policies can change, read the store’s current FAQ before placing a pickup order, particularly if your pickup date is more than a few days away.
Is the trip worth it?
The store fits some visitors better than others.
- A good fit: travelers already visiting north Alabama or the surrounding region, shoppers who enjoy unpredictable secondhand finds, and families who want a museum, a café and a sorting experience in one stop.
- A weaker fit: shoppers who need a specific item or size by a set date, buyers who want a known discount level, and anyone who would make a long trip for a single purchase.
If you are shopping online, the same unpredictability applies. The online catalog reflects what is currently available, not a fixed inventory.
What the sources can and cannot confirm
The headline’s “only lost baggage store in America” is the way the store is commonly described. The sources reviewed for this article do not document a competing store, but they do not survey the country either. Treat “only” as a common description rather than a verified national claim.
The company also says it has welcomed more than one million store visitors each year. That figure appears on its official history page and has not been independently audited. Pair it with the other company-reported numbers in this article, not with independent measurements.
Finally, the company’s process descriptions reflect how it presents its own operations. They are useful for understanding what a visitor sees, but they are not third-party verification of how each bag is handled.
