They are not interchangeable. Which ones matter depends on your passport, immigration status, route and travel date. EES is already fully operational; ETIAS was still scheduled to launch in the last quarter of 2026 as of the European Commission’s 28 April 2026 update.
UK ETA, EES and ETIAS: what each system does
| System | Where it applies | Who may be affected | What you do | Cost or validity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) | The United Kingdom | Eligible visitors who do not need a UK visa and do not already have qualifying UK immigration status | Apply before travelling through an official UK channel | The UK Home Office stated a £10 fee in its 5 March 2025 announcement; check the current fee. Ordinarily valid for two years or until the linked passport expires, whichever comes first. |
| EU Entry/Exit System (EES) | External borders of the 29 Schengen countries | Relevant non-EU short-stay travellers, subject to exemptions | Register at the border; there is no advance application | UK guidance says registration is free. EES records border crossings; it is not a travel authorisation with a validity period. |
| EU European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) | Short visits to the Schengen area and Cyprus | Visa-exempt travellers who will need the authorisation once the system opens | Apply online before travel after the official system opens | The European Commission’s 28 April 2026 update scheduled launch for Q4 2026, with the exact date still to be announced. |
An ETA does not authorise entry to the EU, and EES is not an advance visa-waiver application. ETIAS is a separate authorisation from both. Requirements can differ even for people taking the same route, so check each relevant system against your own passport and status.
Do you need a UK ETA?
The UK ETA is a digital permission to travel, not a visa. It is required for eligible visitors who are visa-exempt and do not already hold another qualifying UK immigration status. Eligible European visitors began needing an ETA for UK travel on 2 April 2025. That date did not make every European national subject to the same rule: eligibility depends on nationality and status.
The ETA is linked to the passport used in the application. If that passport expires, the ETA does too; otherwise it is ordinarily valid for two years. The Home Office’s 5 March 2025 announcement gave a £10 fee and advised allowing up to three working days where an application needs additional review. Those are dated figures, not a guarantee of the current fee or processing time. Check the live UK application guidance before applying, and use only official UK channels.

What EES means at the European border
EES began phased operation on 12 October 2025 and became fully operational at all external border crossing points on 10 April 2026, according to the European Commission. For relevant non-EU short-stay travellers, it electronically records passport and entry/exit information, a facial image and fingerprints, replacing manual passport stamps. There is no EES application to submit in advance; UK government guidance says registration is free.
Where EES applies
EES applies at the external borders of these 29 Schengen countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Cyprus and the Republic of Ireland are outside Schengen, so EES does not apply there. Cyprus is nevertheless included in the planned ETIAS coverage.

What happens during registration
At a first registration, you may be asked to provide fingerprints and a photo at a booth or border station. On a later visit, you may need a passport scan and either a fingerprint or photo. Children under 12 are not fingerprinted, but the UK government says all travellers, including babies, are photographed and have a digital record.
The UK government has estimated that the EES check itself would take 1 to 2 minutes per person, while warning that queues may be longer at busy times. That estimate is for the check, not a promise about total waiting time. EES also does not change the short-stay limit of 90 days in any 180-day period.

When UK-to-Europe checks happen before departure
At Dover, Eurotunnel Le Shuttle at Folkestone and Eurostar at St Pancras, EES checks take place before departure from the UK under the juxtaposed border arrangements. On flights and most other ferry routes, registration takes place at the destination border. Allow extra time for the possibility of queues, especially if you are registering for the first time.

ETIAS is a planned online travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors making short stays in the Schengen area and Cyprus. As of the European Commission’s 28 April 2026 update, it was scheduled to start in the last quarter of 2026; the exact launch date had not been announced. Do not apply before the official system opens. GOV.UK warns that websites selling ETIAS applications before launch are fraudulent.

Quick Recap
How to check requirements for your itinerary
- Identify the passport you will travel on. Check requirements for that nationality, not only your residence or departure country.
- Check your immigration status. A visa, residence document, dual nationality or other qualifying status can affect whether an authorisation or EES registration applies.
- Map every border crossing. The UK, Schengen countries, Cyprus and Ireland do not all use the same system. Check each destination and any transit or border crossing in your route.
- Use official guidance for the travel date. Check current UK ETA eligibility and fees, EES exemptions, and the ETIAS launch date and application channel. Recheck close to departure because dates and fees can change.
- Build in time for border processing. If your route uses Dover, Folkestone or St Pancras, complete the relevant checks before leaving the UK and allow for possible queues.
