Before UFC 305 at Perth’s RAC Arena on 18 August 2024, Western Australia’s Consumer Protection warned fans about inflated and potentially invalid resale tickets. Its event-specific advice was to buy through Ticketek, the authorized seller, or Ticketek Marketplace, the official resale channel named for UFC 305. The event has passed; the warning remains a useful example of how WA ticket resale rules work when an event has a resale restriction.
What Consumer Protection warned UFC 305 fans about
In a notice published on 13 August 2024, five days before the event, WA Consumer Protection cautioned fans buying last-minute tickets from unauthorized sources. Those buyers could overpay or face cancelled tickets, denied entry, fake or duplicate tickets, incorrect seats, and difficulty obtaining a refund. The agency’s event-specific recommendation was to use Ticketek or Ticketek Marketplace, rather than assuming a listing on an unrelated resale platform was safe. How WA’s ticket resale cap works
WA’s 10% resale limit is not a blanket rule for every ticket everywhere. Consumer Protection says it applies to events held in WA when a resale restriction is in place. The restriction may be set by the authorized seller, venue, or event organizer and should appear in the ticket’s terms and conditions.
For a restricted event, an advertised resale ticket must show its original price, provide location details such as section or bay, row and seat, and be offered for no more than 10% above the original price. Check the event terms to establish whether the restriction applies, then compare the listing against the original ticket price. Why a negotiable listing can still be a problem
The 2024 UFC 305 notice warned sellers that a listing with a negotiable-looking figure such as “$1,234” could be treated as the advertised or offered price. If that figure exceeded the applicable cap, the seller could face enforcement. This was the agency’s example in its 2024 event notice, not a substitute for checking current guidance or the terms for another event.

What penalties the agency described
The UFC 305 notice said Consumer Protection could issue a $2,000 infringement notice and that courts could impose penalties up to $20,000 for individuals. It also cited penalties up to $100,000 for illegal use of bots to buy tickets in bulk. Current WA agency guidance separately describes possible court fines up to $20,000 for individuals and up to $100,000 for corporations, as well as up to $100,000 for bot use. These are distinct penalty categories, not one standard fine; consult the current guidance for the applicable circumstances.
A separate 2023 case involved UFC 284, not UFC 305: a Perth man who bought a ticket for $2,821.95 advertised it for $5,000 and $4,500, pleaded guilty to two charges, and received a $2,000 fine plus $756.25 in costs. How to check a resale ticket and report a concern
- Find the original ticket price and the event terms that establish whether a resale restriction applies.
- Check that the listing shows the original price and enough location detail to identify the seat.
- For a restricted WA event, compare the asking price with the 10% limit.
- Save screenshots of the listing, price, seat details, and relevant terms in case you need to raise a complaint.
- Use WA Consumer Protection’s ticket scalping guidance to report suspected breaches and understand buyer risks.
Consumer Protection also reported that 16 people received $2,000 infringement notices for reselling Coldplay tickets above the cap; that enforcement count concerned Coldplay, not UFC 305. The WA Government’s July 2024 statement covers that separate enforcement action and the UFC 305 advice.
