The commitment covered that holiday window, not every Ubisoft game released for next-generation consoles afterward.
What Ubisoft said about next-gen game prices
In a July 22, 2020 report, GameSpot described Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot responding to a question during an earnings call. The report quoted him as saying: “For the Christmas games, we plan to come with the same price as the previous generation of consoles,” followed by, “That’s what we’re focused on at the moment.”

GameSpot framed the previous-generation U.S. price level as $60 and discussed the possibility of next-generation games costing $70. The key qualification is “Christmas games”: Ubisoft’s answer addressed its 2020 holiday releases, not a permanent pricing policy. The specific wording is attributed here to GameSpot’s contemporaneous report; it was not verified against an official transcript of that exchange.
Which games were part of the 2020 discussion?
GameSpot associated Ubisoft’s statement with the next-generation versions of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Watch Dogs: Legion. Ubisoft’s next-generation launch overview lists the platforms and launch timing for both games.

Did the $60 statement apply to games released later?
No later-release price was established in the reported exchange. Guillemot’s answer was limited to Ubisoft’s 2020 Christmas games, and GameSpot distinguished that group from releases after the holiday period. It should not be read as a promise that all Ubisoft PS5 or Xbox Series X|S games would remain $60, nor as an industry-wide decision.

Were next-gen upgrades included?
Ubisoft separately described no-additional-cost upgrades for certain previous-generation purchases. Its launch overview said eligible Xbox One X owners could use Smart Delivery to upgrade Watch Dogs: Legion to Xbox Series X|S, and PS4 buyers could upgrade to the PS5 version. For Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, it described no-cost next-generation upgrades from eligible Xbox One X and PS4 copies.
These upgrade terms are distinct from the reported $60 price statement: they concern moving an eligible purchase to a corresponding console version, not the price Ubisoft promised for later games. They are historical launch details and should not be treated as current store or compatibility terms.

What this means for a buyer comparing $60 and $70
If you were deciding what to expect for Ubisoft’s 2020 holiday launch games, the contemporaneous report indicated the previous-generation U.S. price level, rather than $70. It does not establish the price of a particular edition in every region or retailer, and it says nothing definitive about later Ubisoft releases. For any specific purchase, the edition, platform, region, and listing determine the applicable price.
Ubisoft’s official FY2020–21 first-half earnings release covers the six months ended September 30, 2020 and discusses next-generation console momentum, but it does not substantiate this particular $60 statement. The pricing claim therefore rests on GameSpot’s July 2020 reporting.
