The expansion brought major supermarket chains onto Uber and Uber Eats, but the figure describes a historical rollout, not Uber’s current coverage in 2026.
What Uber announced in July 2021
Uber’s July 19 announcement covered on-demand and scheduled grocery delivery through both the Uber and Uber Eats apps. The company named San Francisco, New York City, Washington, D.C., Miami, Dallas and Phoenix among the markets served. Its “more than 400 cities and towns” figure described places where the service was offered; it did not mean every store or product was available to every customer in those areas.
Uber had launched U.S. grocery delivery in July 2020, initially including Miami and Dallas. The 2021 expansion therefore marked a rapid broadening of an existing service rather than its first U.S. launch. Uber’s grocery launch announcement described the early Cornershop-supported operation.

Which grocery stores were involved?
Albertsons Companies
The largest part of the expansion was a partnership with Albertsons Companies. Uber said the rollout involved approximately 1,200 stores and included banners such as Albertsons, Safeway, Jewel-Osco, ACME, Tom Thumb and Randalls, along with other Albertsons-owned brands. Uber’s second-quarter 2021 materials described the full national presence and addition of those stores as expected by year-end, so the figure should be read as partnership and planned rollout scale—not as a claim that all 1,200 stores were live for every customer on announcement day.
Regional partners and local availability
Uber also named Southeastern Grocers and New York’s Red Apple Group. A retailer’s participation did not guarantee that a particular nearby store appeared in the app: availability depended on the customer’s address, store participation, local inventory, operating hours and delivery capacity.

How a grocery order worked
The broad ordering flow resembled other app-based deliveries, although exact menu names and features varied by market and app version:

- Browse the grocery category or participating stores shown for that address.
- Add available products to the cart and choose immediate delivery or a later slot if offered.
- Review the checkout total, including applicable fees, before confirming.
- Respond to any substitution or refund request if an item is unavailable, then follow delivery progress in the app.
Grocery fulfillment could involve a retailer or store employee preparing an order, or a courier shopping for items in-store and then delivering them. These models involve different labor and timing; not every order was simply a bag already packed by a supermarket. Later, Uber formalized courier shopping in the United States as Shop and Pay. In March 2023, Uber said nearly 200,000 U.S. couriers were regularly completing shopping trips each month—a later company-reported statistic, not a 2021 launch figure. Grocery orders can be affected by stock changes between checkout and picking. An item may be replaced, refunded, or adjusted for quantity or weight. Later Uber tools added improved replacement handling, shopper-customer communication, barcode scanning, live tracking and support; these should not be assumed to have been available everywhere at the time of the 2021 expansion. Uber’s later grocery-experience update describes those developments.
What customers paid—and what “free delivery” meant
In the 2021 announcement, Uber said Uber Pass and Eats Pass members received a $0 delivery fee on grocery orders over $30 where that benefit applied. It was a membership benefit, not free grocery delivery for everyone. A zero delivery fee also did not necessarily remove service or small-order fees, taxes, tips, or differences between app and in-store item prices; customers should compare the checkout total rather than the delivery-fee line alone.

Uber introduced Uber One in November 2021, after the expansion. At launch, Uber listed the membership at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year and described qualifying delivery-fee benefits, including on grocery orders of $30 or more. Those are historical launch terms, not current pricing or a statement of current benefits. Uber’s Uber One launch announcement records those terms.
Why Uber pushed into groceries
The expansion fit Uber’s effort to add delivery categories beyond restaurant meals as pandemic-era demand for delivered necessities grew and ride-hailing faced pressure. Grocery delivery was part of the company’s broader New Verticals strategy, alongside convenience, alcohol, pharmacy and other non-restaurant deliveries. The Albertsons agreement offered access to an established supermarket network rather than requiring Uber to build retailer relationships one store at a time.

Uber said at the time that nearly 3 million consumers were ordering groceries and other essentials through its broader operation each month. That is Uber’s company-reported figure and should not be mistaken for an independently audited count of U.S. customers. Grocery also added operational challenges that restaurant delivery does not resolve on its own: picking items, maintaining accurate inventory, managing fresh goods, communicating substitutions and supporting customers when a basket changes.

How the grocery service evolved afterward
Cornershop and a larger store network
Uber’s early grocery operation used Cornershop technology and operations in selected markets. Uber later said it had welcomed the Cornershop team and added nearly 24,000 grocery stores worldwide to Uber Eats, including Albertsons, Carrefour, Costco and Woolworths. That was a later global figure and is not comparable to the 2021 count of U.S. cities and towns. Uber’s product update describes the integration and newer ordering tools.
Later product and payment developments
In September 2025, Uber announced Fresh Days, ALDI availability and a Fresh Guarantee for certain eligible fresh items. The company said qualifying issues had to be reported within 48 hours with a clear photo, subject to exclusions and policy terms. Uber also announced nationwide SNAP-EBT acceptance for ALDI orders on Uber Eats from that partnership’s launch; this does not establish that every grocery merchant or the 2021 Albertsons rollout accepted SNAP-EBT. These were later developments, not features of the 2021 expansion. Uber’s September 2025 grocery product announcement sets out the stated terms.
What the 400-city figure means for customers
The announcement was a milestone in Uber’s effort to extend its delivery network into everyday shopping, but it is not a reliable guide to what a customer can order today. Store lists, coverage, fees and app features can change, and the 2021 announcement does not establish current availability. For a present-day order, the practical check is to enter the delivery address in Uber or Uber Eats and compare the complete checkout total with retailer pickup or other delivery options.
For retailers, the marketplace model could extend delivery reach without building a full last-mile network, while giving Uber more use for its app, payment systems and courier network. The trade-offs include marketplace fees, customer-relationship control and the extra complexity of grocery picking and substitutions. Unlike a restaurant order, a grocery basket depends on live store inventory and often includes products whose freshness, weight or acceptable replacement matters to the buyer.
