DAMAC Properties, a UAE real-estate company led by Hussain Sajwani, was named in a January 7, 2025 announcement of a planned $20 billion investment in U.S. data centers. The figure describes a proposed commitment—not verified spending or completed facilities. President-elect Donald Trump also named eight states for a first phase, but that list was attributed to his remarks, not confirmed construction sites.

Which UAE company announced the investment?

The company was DAMAC Properties, led by Hussain Sajwani. On January 7, 2025, President-elect Donald Trump announced that Sajwani planned to invest $20 billion in U.S. data centers. The Associated Press reported the announcement and quoted Trump saying Sajwani “was very inspired by the election and wouldn’t do it without the election.” That was Trump’s explanation for the pledge, not a statement that the projects had already begun. Associated Press coverage

Axios separately reported Sajwani’s remarks that DAMAC was “planning to invest $20 billion and even more than that, if the opportunity in the market allow[s] us.” His wording likewise described a plan. At the time, the United States had not previously been part of DAMAC’s EDGNEX data-center portfolio, according to AP.

Where were the proposed U.S. data centers?

Trump named Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana as states for the first phase, according to Axios. This is a list from Trump’s announcement remarks; the available reporting does not verify that DAMAC selected sites, acquired land, or began construction in any of them. Axios coverage

Has DAMAC spent the $20 billion or opened data centers?

The cited AP and Axios reports establish an announced plan, but do not establish how much, if any, of the $20 billion was later deployed. They also do not verify financing, site acquisitions, construction, completed capacity, or operating facilities. The project’s later implementation status is therefore not verified by the material cited here; the announcement should not be treated as proof that U.S. data centers are running.

How is this different from Stargate UAE?

Stargate UAE is a separate project announced in Abu Dhabi in May 2025, not the DAMAC U.S. investment. The Abu Dhabi Media Office described a planned 1-gigawatt AI compute cluster built by G42 and operated by OpenAI and Oracle, with Cisco and SoftBank as partners and NVIDIA supplying Grace Blackwell GB300 systems. Its first 200-megawatt cluster was expected to go live in 2026. The cluster is planned within a separate 5-gigawatt UAE–U.S. AI campus in Abu Dhabi; these are announced plans and targets, not confirmation of completion. Abu Dhabi Media Office announcement

The U.S. Department of Commerce described the U.S.–UAE AI Acceleration Partnership as a government framework for technology cooperation. It includes an announced 1-gigawatt data center and planned 5-gigawatt cluster in Abu Dhabi, alongside a process intended to facilitate UAE investment in U.S. digital infrastructure. That broader framework does not establish that DAMAC’s $20 billion pledge was deployed through Stargate or under the partnership. U.S. Department of Commerce announcement

A further UAE AI-infrastructure announcement should not be conflated with either project: on September 29, 2026, Mubadala and Together AI announced a partnership to explore infrastructure and ecosystem opportunities in the UAE, including a planned Together AI presence in Abu Dhabi. The release does not connect it to DAMAC’s U.S. plan. Mubadala announcement

What does the announcement mean for U.S. investment?

It signals an intention by a UAE company to finance U.S. data-center development, a form of infrastructure investment. But the announcement alone does not show whether capital was committed to specific projects, what financing or ownership arrangements would apply, or what economic results followed. The sources cited do not provide verified figures for jobs, economic output, or completed U.S. capacity attributable to DAMAC’s plan.
