Pursuing Argentine citizenship does not, by itself, settle your tax residence or end U.S. filing duties. Keep the questions separate: what the United States requires of you as a citizen, whether foreign-account or asset reports apply, and whether your facts make you an Argentine tax resident.
Do I still have to file U.S. taxes if I become an Argentine citizen?
Generally, yes: U.S. citizens remain subject to U.S. income-tax rules on worldwide income while living abroad. The IRS says citizens and resident aliens must report taxable worldwide income under the Internal Revenue Code. Whether you must file a return depends on the usual factors, including gross income, age, filing status, and other circumstances—not simply on where you live or whether you paid tax abroad. Do I need to report an Argentine bank account to the IRS?
Possibly. FBAR reporting is separate from your income-tax return: it is filed electronically with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), not attached to Form 1040. A U.S. person generally must file FinCEN Form 114 if they have a financial interest in, or signature or other authority over, foreign bank, securities, or other financial accounts whose aggregate value exceeded $10,000 at any point during the calendar year. This is an account-reporting threshold; an account need not have produced taxable income for it to matter. Do not treat the FBAR threshold as a general exemption from other foreign-asset reporting. Form 8938 has its own thresholds and rules, and certain interests or transactions may bring other information returns into play. The applicable thresholds depend on your circumstances; the IRS sources linked here should be checked for the rules that fit your filing status and residence.
| Report or return | What it addresses | When to investigate it |
|---|---|---|
| Form 1040 | U.S. income-tax return, including taxable worldwide income when filing is required. IRS overview | Apply the ordinary filing criteria to your income, age, filing status, and other circumstances. |
| FinCEN Form 114 (FBAR) | Foreign financial accounts in which you have a financial interest or signature or other authority; separate from Form 1040. IRS filing and payment guidance | Check whether the aggregate maximum value of relevant accounts exceeded $10,000 at any point in the calendar year. |
| Form 8938 | Specified foreign financial assets under a separate reporting regime. IRS filing requirements | Check the applicable asset definitions and thresholds for your facts; an FBAR filing does not answer this question. |
| Forms 5471, 3520, or 3520-A | Fact-specific reporting involving certain foreign corporations, trusts, or gifts. IRS filing requirements | Review if you own or are connected with a foreign entity or trust, or receive a potentially reportable gift. |
Can a foreign income exclusion or credit reduce U.S. tax?
Potentially, but these provisions are not automatic consequences of acquiring citizenship or opening an account. The foreign earned income and housing exclusions are available only when their requirements are met and are generally claimed on a U.S. return. The bona fide residence test requires an uninterrupted period that includes a full tax year for the relevant claim; simply spending a year abroad does not automatically establish bona fide residence. IRS bona fide residence test guidance; IRS Publication 54.
A foreign tax credit may be relevant when foreign income tax has been paid, but whether a credit, exclusion, or other treatment applies depends on the income, tax paid, residence facts, and tax year. Do not assume that paying tax in Argentina eliminates U.S. tax or reporting.

Does Argentine citizenship make me an Argentine tax resident?
Not as a blanket rule. Citizenship and tax residence are different questions, and the applicable pathway matters. The updated official text of Decree 824/2019 includes a 2026 amendment addressing naturalization under the investment-citizenship provision: a foreign individual naturalized after relevant investments under that provision is not considered an Argentine tax resident solely because of naturalization. The amendment also preserves resident status for people who were already permanent residents when they obtained citizenship through investment. Updated Decree 824/2019.
That specific provision should not be generalized to every Argentine citizenship route or every person’s circumstances. Argentina’s broader residence rules address facts such as permanent home, center of vital interests, and habitual presence in dual-residence cases. Original text of Decree 824/2019. If you are considering naturalization, identify the precise legal route and assess your residence facts separately from your nationality.

Do not rely on an assumed U.S.-Argentina income-tax treaty to resolve this. The IRS explains that treaty provisions and their specific articles determine whether a credit, exemption, reduced rate, or other safeguard applies. The official IRS treaty guidance cited here does not establish that a U.S.-Argentina income-tax treaty applies to your situation; check the current official treaty listings and the relevant text before relying on treaty relief. ARCA describes a free online application for an Argentine tax-residence certificate for a person who was resident in Argentina during the period covered. The application uses the applicant’s tax key, and the submitted information is recorded as a sworn declaration. A certificate is evidence of Argentine tax residence for that period; it does not determine your U.S. filing obligations. ARCA: Certificar residencia fiscal en la Argentina.
When are U.S. returns due, and what records should I keep?
For calendar-year taxpayers, the IRS states that the usual individual return due date is April 15 of the following year. Qualifying people abroad may receive an automatic two-month extension to file, but that extension does not stop interest from accruing on unpaid tax from the regular due date. Check the IRS calendar for the specific filing year, including weekend or holiday adjustments, payment deadlines, and any extension that applies. IRS filing and payment dates for people abroad.
- Keep records of income and foreign taxes paid, organized by tax year.
- For each foreign account, retain ownership and authority details and the account’s maximum balance during the calendar year.
- Record interests in foreign entities or trusts, relevant gifts, and the dates and grounds on which you claim Argentine residence.
- Use the records to assess each reporting regime separately; a return, FBAR, and other information forms are not interchangeable.
When should you consult a cross-border tax professional?
Get advice from a preparer or adviser experienced in both U.S. international tax and Argentina if you have Argentine income, foreign accounts, trusts, foreign entities, substantial assets, or uncertainty about residence status or your naturalization route. Filing thresholds, exclusion eligibility, foreign tax credit treatment, Argentine obligations, and residence determinations all depend on personal facts and the relevant tax year; the general rules above cannot settle an individual case.
