The U.S.–EU trade framework now sets a 15% ceiling for most EU exports to the United States, including cars. The European Commission says the framework entered into force on 1 July 2026, after formal approval by the European Parliament and Council. For covered EU-origin cars, the 15% is an all-inclusive ceiling—not a new 15% tariff stacked on top of the existing import duty.
What is the U.S. tariff on cars from the EU?
The European Commission’s explainer, updated 27 July 2026, describes the framework’s 15% rate as a ceiling for most EU exports, including cars. It says the ceiling prevents tariffs from stacking. European Commission: EU–U.S. trade framework.
The formula in the parties’ 21 August 2025 joint statement distinguishes the ordinary U.S. most-favoured-nation (MFN) tariff from the additional Section 232 auto tariff. For covered EU-origin goods with an MFN rate below 15%, the combined MFN and Section 232 rate is 15%. If the MFN rate is already 15% or higher, the formula says no additional Section 232 auto tariff applies. Joint statement on a U.S.–EU framework agreement.
That treatment applies to goods covered by the framework; it is not a blanket statement about every vehicle, part, or customs entry. Why does the headline say “down from 30%”?
The 30% figure was a broader tariff threat, not the previous auto-specific rate. The Associated Press reported that the earlier tariff rate on EU autos was 27.5% and described the reduction to 15%. Associated Press report on the EU auto tariff reduction.
Keep the comparisons separate: the 30% figure refers to the broader threat; 27.5% was the auto rate reported by AP; and 15% is the framework’s ceiling for covered EU exports, including cars. The 15% should not be read as 15 percentage points added to the ordinary duty.

When did the lower rate take effect?
- July 2025: EU and U.S. leaders reached a political framework, according to the European Commission.
- 21 August 2025: The parties published their joint statement, which set out the auto-tariff formula and linked the U.S. reduction to EU legislative action.
- 1 July 2026: The European Commission says the framework entered into force after approval by the European Parliament and Council.
The Commission says the EU has fully implemented its main commitments under the joint statement. The joint statement’s original condition was that the EU formally introduce the necessary legislative proposal before the United States reduced the Section 232 tariffs under the specified auto formula.
What could still change?
The Commission says U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminium derivatives—currently as high as 50%—are expected to be brought into line with the 15% ceiling by the end of 2026. If that does not happen, the EU could suspend concessions. The Commission also describes a sunset clause running to 2029. What the change means for car buyers
A lower tariff can reduce an importer’s tariff burden, but the tariff rate alone does not establish whether, when, or by how much a vehicle’s retail price will change. Prices also depend on companies’ costs and pricing decisions; no consumer-price or vehicle-sales effect is established by the cited sources.
AP reported that EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič estimated automakers would save €500–600 million per month from the retroactive reduction. That is an attributed estimate, not a verified measure of realized savings or a forecast of savings passed on to buyers.
