This is a historical estimate of seed-related spending per acre, not the current price of a bag of seed or a constant-quality price index.
What the 260% increase measures
The comparison comes from the USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) soybean cost accounts. Those accounts include purchased seed, seed technology fees, seed cleaning, and the opportunity cost of homegrown seed. The figures therefore describe average seed expenditure per acre, rather than a retail price per unit of seed.
ERS reported that spending rose from $19.72 per acre in 1997 to $59.20 in 2010, a 200% increase over that interval, and then reached $71.03 per acre in 2023—more than 260% above the 1997 figure. The figures are nominal dollars; the comparison does not adjust for inflation or isolate changes in seed quality. See the USDA ERS May 2024 analysis of soybean seeding rates and costs.
How seed spending compares with total production costs
Overall soybean production costs also rose, from $245.83 per acre in 1997 to $632.22 in 2023, a 157% increase according to ERS. Seed’s share of that total was 8% in 1997, peaked at 16% in 2010, and stood at 11% in 2023.
#1 Best Overall
- High Yield Bush Growth: midori giant edamame seeds form 24-36 inch nitrogen-fixing bushes, rewarding vegetable garden growers in USDA 3-9 with crunchy pods rich in complete protein.
- Fast Germination: soybean seeds for planting sprout in 5-10 days at 70-90 °F, letting home garden beginners harvest tender edamame in just 80 days while heirloom seeds thrive in loamy soil.
- Nutrient-Rich Snack: soy beans deliver sweet nutty flavor and buttery texture; boil or freeze for soy-protein snacks, soy bean seeds to plant are ideal for survival gardening fans seeking clean non gmo edamame.
- Easy Direct Sow: edamame seeds for planting outdoors need 1" depth and 12" spacing, no trellis required; bush habit suits containers or raised beds, making veggie seeds ideal for small spaces.
- Disease-Smart Cultivation: edamame seeds to plant resist common pests when grown in full sun and evenly moist soil; gardening kit growers mulch to conserve water and pick bright green pods before they yellow.
| Year | Seed spending per acre | Total production costs per acre | Seed share of total costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1997 | $19.72 | $245.83 | 8% |
| 2010 | $59.20 | not stated (USDA ERS, 2024) | 16% |
| 2023 | $71.03 | $632.22 | 11% |
The comparison shows that seed spending grew faster than total production costs over the full period, but seed remained one component of a much larger per-acre cost total.
Why costs rose while seeding rates fell
The cost increase did not come from farmers planting more seeds per acre, at least across the survey observations ERS cites. Average U.S. soybean seeding rates declined from over 200,000 seeds per acre in 1997 to about 157,000 in 2018. Over roughly the same span, average row width increased from about 17 inches to almost 20 inches.

- Your hunt is in the bag - we deliver more quality seed for your money!
- Certified seed for maximum growth and attractant
- 1 bag (5 lbs) plants approximately 1/10 acre
- High protein and highly preferred forage for deer
- Non-GMO - ideal for mixing with other food plot seeds
ERS associates these changes with evolving planting practices and technology, including genetically engineered varieties, conventional planters, stacked herbicide resistance, pesticide-treated seed, and precision agriculture. The agency says technological advances have improved seed quality and reliability and may partly explain higher seed costs. It does not assign a specific portion of the 260% increase to any one factor, so these are explanations of associated changes, not a quantified breakdown of the cost rise.
The periods differ: the per-acre cost comparison runs through 2023, while the seeding-rate observations cited in the ERS article run through 2018. A later cost figure should not be read as if it came from a matching 2023 seeding-rate survey.

How this differs from a seed price index
ERS also reported that an average price index for seeds used predominantly in genetically modified crops rose 463% between 1990 and 2020. That index covers a crop group including soybeans, corn, and cotton. It is not a soybean-only measure, and it does not report soybean seed spending per planted acre. The index provides broader context, but it cannot be substituted for the 1997–2023 per-acre comparison.
For current data availability and the scope of ERS commodity cost estimates, see the agency’s Commodity Costs and Returns product and its documentation. ERS describes the series as estimates for the United States and major production regions. The product and Soybeans file are listed as updated October 1, 2026; that listing alone does not establish that the historical 1997–2023 comparison in the May 2024 article has been revised.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- HEIRLOOM VARIETY & HIGH YIELD: Outsidepride soy bean seeds is a robust heirloom strain known for its high yield, producing over 3 bushels per acre more than the popular Manokin variety, making it a valuable choice for maximizing harvest output. This variety is perfect for outdoor gardening enthusiasts looking to optimize their yard space.
- RICH IN PROTEIN & OIL WITH VERSATILE USES: Containing about 18% oil and 38% protein, this soybean variety is perfect for producing high-quality soy bean oil and protein-rich meal. These soybeans can be processed into a wide range of products, including soy milk powder, soy flour, soy protein, tofu, and various industrial non-food products, showcasing its versatility. Ideal for making various soy-based meals such as edamame snacks.
- OPTIMAL PLANTING GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMUM YIELD: For best results, plant soybean seeds at a depth of 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with row spacing between 7.5 and 15 inches, depending on soil type and tillage. This ensures uniform seed placement and optimal growth, adapting well to midwestern states and capturing a significant percentage of non-GMO acres.
- HIGH-PROTEIN ANIMAL FEED: The high-protein fiber left after oil extraction is ideal for animal feed, particularly for poultry and swine industries, which consume over half of the processed soybean meal. This meal is also crucial for cattle, other farm animals, and pets, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
- ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.
