The BTC reportedly went to Coinbase Prime and the BNB to a new wallet. Neither report confirmed a sale or gave an official reason for the movements.
What the reported transfers show
Unchained reported that 833.599 BTC, valued at about $71.56 million at the time, was sent to Coinbase Prime. It also reported that 40,285 BNB, then worth about $31.63 million, went to a new wallet. The combined reported value was about $103.19 million. These dollar values are snapshots based on prices at reporting time; the token quantities are the more durable figures. Unchained reported the amounts and destinations, while CoinDesk described the overall movement as more than $100 million.
| Asset | Reported quantity | Reported value at the time | Reported destination | What is established about disposition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin (BTC) | 833.599 BTC | About $71.56 million | Coinbase Prime | No sale was confirmed in the reports. A deposit destination alone does not establish liquidation. |
| BNB | 40,285 BNB | About $31.63 million | A new wallet | Final purpose and disposition were not confirmed; the reports did not identify an exchange destination. |
Why the move does not prove a sale
A transfer records assets moving between addresses; it does not, by itself, show that they were sold. Coinbase Prime was the reported BTC destination, but that fact is not confirmation that the bitcoin was liquidated. For the BNB, the reported destination was simply a new wallet. CoinDesk and Unchained said a sale had not been confirmed. CoinDesk and Unchained also provided no official explanation for the transfers.
What “U.S. government-linked” means—and what remains unknown
The reports attribute the wallets to the U.S. government, but “government-linked” is an attribution based on wallet analysis and reporting, not proof that a named agency directly controlled each address. Arkham Intelligence describes its U.S. Government entity as encompassing wallets linked to federal agencies and distinguishes that broad grouping from the narrower BTC figure it associates with the U.S. Marshals Service. Arkham’s overview is useful context for why a broad analytics label should not be read as a precise statement about custody or agency control.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
The reports did not provide transaction hashes, a direct government statement, or confirmation of what ultimately happened to the assets. The actual purpose and eventual disposition therefore remain unknown. The available information does not establish whether the movement was a sale, a change in custody, an internal transfer, or something else.
