In July 2025, the value of U.S. agricultural imports exceeded exports by $4.97 billion, a gap reported as 9% wider than July 2024 and the largest July deficit on record. The figure is a one-month balance—not a record for every month—and the January–July 2025 deficit was a separate $33.6 billion total.
What the July 2025 record means
The headline refers to the U.S. agricultural trade balance in July 2025. Bloomberg reporter Gerson Freitas Jr., citing USDA data, reported that agricultural exports lagged imports by $4.97 billion that month. The gap was 9% wider than a year earlier and the largest on record for July. The comparison is month-specific: it does not establish that July had the largest deficit of any month.
A trade deficit here means the value of agricultural imports exceeded the value of agricultural exports during the stated period. It is a dollar-value comparison, not a count of shipments or a measure of farm profitability.
How the monthly figure compares with the year-to-date total
The same report put the cumulative agricultural trade deficit for January through July 2025 at $33.6 billion. That total covers seven months; July’s $4.97 billion covers one month, so the two numbers answer different questions.

#1 Best Overall
- High Yield Bush Growth: midori giant edamame seeds form 24-36 inch nitrogen-fixing bushes, rewarding vegetable garden growers in USDA 3-9 with crunchy pods rich in complete protein.
- Fast Germination: soybean seeds for planting sprout in 5-10 days at 70-90 °F, letting home garden beginners harvest tender edamame in just 80 days while heirloom seeds thrive in loamy soil.
- Nutrient-Rich Snack: soy beans deliver sweet nutty flavor and buttery texture; boil or freeze for soy-protein snacks, soy bean seeds to plant are ideal for survival gardening fans seeking clean non gmo edamame.
- Easy Direct Sow: edamame seeds for planting outdoors need 1" depth and 12" spacing, no trellis required; bush habit suits containers or raised beds, making veggie seeds ideal for small spaces.
- Disease-Smart Cultivation: edamame seeds to plant resist common pests when grown in full sun and evenly moist soil; gardening kit growers mulch to conserve water and pick bright green pods before they yellow.
| Measure | Reported value | Period and comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly deficit | $4.97 billion | July 2025; 9% wider than July 2024 and reported as a July record |
| Cumulative deficit | $33.6 billion | January–July 2025 |
| Agricultural imports | More than $132 billion | January–July 2025; almost 8% above the comparable 2024 period |
| Agricultural exports | $98.8 billion | January–July 2025; down 1.3% from the comparable 2024 period |
These historical figures are reported by Bloomberg’s Gerson Freitas Jr. with attribution to USDA data; the underlying July 2025 USDA table was not directly available for row-level verification here. The figures should therefore be read as the reported USDA-based results, not as a new calculation.
What was reported as driving the widening gap
The September 2025 report described imports as the principal driver of the widening deficit during the period. It relayed several possible contributing factors: U.S. demand for imported goods, competition in export markets, production limits, trade tensions affecting soybean sales to China, and increased domestic crop processing for biofuel.

Those explanations are reported context, not a quantified breakdown of July’s $4.97 billion balance. The figures do not show how much each factor contributed, and the monthly balance alone cannot establish causation.
How to check agricultural trade data and interpret revisions
USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Trade of the United States (FATUS) provides agricultural trade data by month, year, country, and commodity. USDA’s Global Agricultural Trade System (GATS) offers monthly historical data back to 1967. The Census Bureau is the official source of trade data used by FATUS, while USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service and Economic Research Service maintain and present the agricultural series.

These datasets can be revised. USDA ERS notes, “Due to these ongoing data updates, historical data values are not static and may change over time.” Commodity-code groupings can change, and Census revisions to the preceding three years are incorporated into ERS data in July. For an apples-to-apples comparison, use the same series and data vintage for both periods rather than combining figures pulled at different times.

The July 2025 figure is historical, not a current-month update. USDA’s GATS page displayed August 2026 exports of $14,085,624,532, imports of $17,545,073,213, and a negative balance of $3,459,448,681 when checked. That later display shows a subsequent monthly deficit; it does not establish whether August 2026 was a record.

- Beautiful - Large full-color packet of Chiba Green Soybean (glycine max) seeds. These useful legumes have deep roots that fix nitrogen to the soil and help the plants survive heat and dry periods. Excellent cover crop and food source for a variety of animals such as deer, cattle, rabbits and chickens. Minimum of 13 g per packet (about 40 seeds).

Annual totals and projections provide a different kind of context. In its February 2026 long-term projections, USDA ERS reported that agricultural imports reached a record $219.4 billion in 2025, projected 2026 exports at $173.0 billion and imports at $210 billion, and expected the deficit to narrow from 2026 under its assumptions. USDA pointed to consumer demand for higher-value imported products, including horticultural goods and processed foods. These are annual figures and projections, not an explanation or replacement for July 2025’s monthly balance.
Keep the scope agricultural: USDA’s agricultural trade series is not the same measure as the broader U.S. goods-and-services trade deficit.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- HEIRLOOM VARIETY & HIGH YIELD: Outsidepride soy bean seeds is a robust heirloom strain known for its high yield, producing over 3 bushels per acre more than the popular Manokin variety, making it a valuable choice for maximizing harvest output. This variety is perfect for outdoor gardening enthusiasts looking to optimize their yard space.
- RICH IN PROTEIN & OIL WITH VERSATILE USES: Containing about 18% oil and 38% protein, this soybean variety is perfect for producing high-quality soy bean oil and protein-rich meal. These soybeans can be processed into a wide range of products, including soy milk powder, soy flour, soy protein, tofu, and various industrial non-food products, showcasing its versatility. Ideal for making various soy-based meals such as edamame snacks.
- OPTIMAL PLANTING GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMUM YIELD: For best results, plant soybean seeds at a depth of 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with row spacing between 7.5 and 15 inches, depending on soil type and tillage. This ensures uniform seed placement and optimal growth, adapting well to midwestern states and capturing a significant percentage of non-GMO acres.
- HIGH-PROTEIN ANIMAL FEED: The high-protein fiber left after oil extraction is ideal for animal feed, particularly for poultry and swine industries, which consume over half of the processed soybean meal. This meal is also crucial for cattle, other farm animals, and pets, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
- ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.
