Tyson Foods announced on March 11, 2024, that it would permanently close its pork plant in Perry, Iowa. The closure was expected to take effect June 28, 2024, and contemporary reports said about 1,200 employees were affected. The announced date is historical, not a future closure date.
Why did Tyson close the Perry, Iowa plant?
Tyson said the decision was intended to improve how its operations served customers. In a statement quoted by The Associated Press and Reuters, the company said: “While this decision was not easy, it emphasizes our focus to optimize the efficiency of our operations to best serve our customers.” Tyson did not identify a single financial result as the sole cause of the Perry closure.
Reuters reported that Tyson’s pork business recorded an adjusted operating loss of $128 million in the fiscal year ended September 30, 2023, compared with adjusted operating income of $198 million in the prior fiscal year ended September 30, 2022. For the fiscal year referenced, Reuters also reported pork sales volume down 2.2% and average prices down 7.9%. Those figures describe the wider business backdrop; they do not, by themselves, establish the specific reason for closing the Perry facility.
When did the Tyson plant in Perry close, and how many people were affected?
Tyson announced the permanent closure on March 11, 2024. Reuters reported that the plant was expected to close June 28, 2024, and The Associated Press reported that about 1,200 workers were affected. The plant was described as Perry’s largest employer. Reuters cited Mayor Dirk Cavanaugh, who put the city’s population at about 8,200 and called the closure “a big blow to the community.”

What help was available to Tyson workers?
At the time of the announcement, Tyson said it would encourage affected employees to apply for open positions elsewhere in the company. The Associated Press reported that Tyson had not specified severance packages at that time; no severance terms should be assumed from that report.

What happened to hogs and pork producers?
Perry’s municipal FAQ said about 100 pork producers needed alternative arrangements to have hogs processed. The city said Tyson indicated that hogs would be rerouted to its Storm Lake and/or Des Moines facilities “for the time being.” The FAQ cited plant throughput of about 9,000 hogs per day. These are estimates and plans reported by the city in connection with the closure, not current production figures. See the City of Perry FAQ.
Reuters, citing livestock economist Steve Meyer of Ever.Ag, also estimated the plant handled about 9,000 pigs per day, a little less than 2% of total U.S. pork production. That was a source-attributed estimate reported in 2024, not a current measure of national production share.

What is the Perry plant’s status now?
The cited city FAQ said the facility’s future use was still under discussion and that reopening or buyer details were unknown at the time. The available reporting here does not establish the plant’s present status or any later reuse. The closure announcement and the city’s supply-chain information remain historical context rather than confirmation of current operations.
