Jeans are described along several dimensions, not by one universal set of “types.” A label may refer to the leg shape, room through the seat and thigh, waistband position, or a retailer’s named style. To compare pairs accurately, look at each of those details rather than relying on the fit name alone.
How to read jeans fit labels
Start by separating the fit through the upper part of the jeans from the shape of the leg. Skinny, slim, regular, relaxed, loose, and baggy generally describe how closely the jeans fit, especially through the seat and thigh. Straight, tapered, bootcut, flare, and wide-leg describe the leg’s outline. A pair can combine both—for example, a relaxed tapered fit.
Retailers do not use every label identically. Lee, Levi’s, H&M, Calvin Klein, and Gap describe their fits in their own terms, so check the product description and measurements when comparing brands. Lee’s fit guide and Levi’s men’s jeans guide illustrate how retailer categories and definitions can differ.
Common fits and leg shapes

Rise: where the waistband sits
Rise describes the waistband’s position on the body. In H&M’s practical descriptions, low-rise jeans rest on the hip bone, mid-rise sit just below the navel, and high-waisted jeans sit above the navel. These are positioning descriptions, not universal measurement thresholds.
For an example of how a retailer relates rise labels to measurements, Gap lists a 9-inch front rise for its Low Rise example, 10 inches for Mid Rise, and 11 inches for High Rise. Wash, stretch, and construction
Wash describes denim color and treatment; common descriptions include light, medium, and dark. Wash is separate from cut and does not, by itself, establish fabric quality or durability. Calvin Klein’s denim guide presents these wash categories.
Stretch is a fabric characteristic, not a leg shape. Jeans may be stretch, non-stretch, or low-stretch, and a retailer may offer different fabric options within a similar fit. Selvedge is a construction detail, not a cut. Levi’s guide presents stretch, non-stretch, and selvedge as choices alongside fit; Gap’s guide describes stretch levels for its own fits.

Length and hem
Inseam and hem length affect where jeans fall on the ankle and how they meet shoes. Check the listed inseam and whether the hem is intended to cover footwear, sit at the ankle, or finish above it as a cropped style. - Leg shape: Compare width and outline from thigh to hem.
- Seat and thigh: Check whether the upper fit is close, regular, relaxed, or loose.
- Rise: Note where the waistband sits and, when available, compare the front-rise measurement.
- Length: Check the inseam and intended hem position with your usual footwear.
- Fabric: Compare stretch or rigid construction separately from silhouette.
- Wash: Treat color and finish as a separate choice.
When trying jeans on, check whether they sit smoothly over the hips, whether the waistband digs in or gaps, and whether the hem lands where you want it. Those checks help reveal whether the garment—not just its label—matches the fit you are looking for.
