Common styles include family restaurants, diners, meal-focused pubs and brew pubs, bistros, grills, and neighborhood restaurants. These are overlapping descriptions, not a single official list: the clearest way to classify a restaurant is by how guests order, receive food, and pay.
What makes a restaurant casual dining?
Casual dining is a consumer-facing description, not a universal formal category. It generally combines full table service with an informal atmosphere and moderately priced menus. Servers or bartenders, comfortable surroundings, and alcohol are common features, but none is required for a restaurant to count as casual dining.
In the United States, the Census Bureau’s 2022 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) distinguishes restaurant formats principally by service and payment sequence. Full-service restaurants serve patrons who order and are served while seated, then pay after eating. Limited-service restaurants generally have patrons order or select items and pay before eating. The NAICS includes family restaurants and brew pubs primarily serving meals among its full-service examples. U.S. Census Bureau: 2022 NAICS
This classification is specific to the United States. It does not establish a global taxonomy or an exhaustive list of casual-dining styles.

Common types of casual dining restaurants
Family restaurants and diners
Family restaurants aim for approachable meals and broad appeal, often with menus that accommodate different ages and preferences. Family restaurants are an explicit full-service example in the U.S. NAICS. Diners are a familiar consumer-facing style that may share the same relaxed, full-service feel, but “diner” is not a separate category in that classification.
Pubs and brew pubs focused on meals
A pub can fit casual dining when it operates as a relaxed, full-service place where food is a central offering rather than an incidental addition to drinks. The U.S. NAICS specifically includes brew pubs primarily serving meals among its full-service examples. A venue’s name alone does not settle its category; the service model and role of food matter.

Bistros, grills, and neighborhood restaurants
These labels describe useful styles rather than mutually exclusive formal classes. A bistro may signal an intimate, informal setting; a grill may emphasize grilled dishes; and a neighborhood restaurant may be defined by its local, everyday role. Any of them may fit casual dining if the experience is relaxed and moderately priced and guests receive full table service. There is no single universal definition that makes these labels precise categories.

Fast casual is a neighboring format, not simply another name for full-service casual dining. It commonly offers counter ordering, customizable menus, freshly prepared food, and a more inviting setting than traditional quick service, while providing less than full table service. American Library Association Center for the Future of Libraries: Fast Casual
| What to compare | Casual dining | Fast casual |
|---|---|---|
| Service and ordering | Guests generally order while seated and are served at the table. | Guests commonly order at a counter and receive limited table service. |
| Payment timing | In the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 NAICS definition of full-service restaurants, guests pay after eating. | Often associated with limited-service ordering; the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 NAICS says limited-service patrons generally pay before eating. |
| Atmosphere | Relaxed and comfortable. | Often more inviting than traditional quick service, but less oriented around full table service. |
| Menu and price | Typically moderately priced; menu and cuisine vary. | Often features customized, freshly prepared food; price alone does not determine the format. |
These are common patterns, not rules that every restaurant follows. A restaurant can combine dine-in table service with takeaway, alcohol, or entertainment, and labels may vary by market. Cuisine by itself is not a reliable way to tell whether a place is casual dining.

How to classify a restaurant you are considering
- Check how you order. If you usually choose from a menu while seated and a server takes the order, that points toward full service. Counter ordering points more toward fast casual or another limited-service format.
- Notice when you pay. Paying after the meal is characteristic of full-service restaurants in the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 NAICS; paying before eating is generally associated with limited service.
- Consider the setting and menu together. A relaxed atmosphere and moderately priced menu support the casual-dining description, but neither feature settles the question alone.
- Treat the venue’s label as a guide, not a rule. “Bistro,” “grill,” “pub,” or “family restaurant” may describe cuisine or atmosphere. Look at the actual service model to distinguish full-service casual dining from a neighboring format.
