Two hikers in northeastern Czechia found 598 gold coins packed into an aluminum container in February 2025. A nearby iron box held jewelry and personal items. Museum specialists have dated the coins from 1808 to 1915, but the hoard’s owner, hiding date and reason for concealment remain unknown.
Where was the gold hoard found?
In early February 2025, two hikers exploring the southwest slopes of Zvičina Hill near Trutnov, in northeastern Czechia, noticed an aluminum container set into an old stone embankment. They also found an iron box about a meter away. The hikers handed both containers to specialists at the Museum of Eastern Bohemia in Hradec Králové. Radio Prague International reported the discovery.
What was inside the containers?
The aluminum container
It held 598 gold coins arranged in 11 stacks and wrapped in black fabric. Museum specialists identified issues from France, Turkey, Belgium, Austria-Hungary, Romania, Italy and Russia. The coins date from 1808 to 1915, according to museum information reported by Popular Mechanics in 2026.
The iron box
The nearby box contained 16 cigarette cases, 10 bracelets, a wire or silver-mesh purse, a comb, a chain and key, and a powder compact. Some details of these associated objects were still being examined in the initial 2025 reporting. The Miami Herald also reported the two-container find.

How much was the hoard worth?
Radio Prague reported a total hoard weight of about 7 kilograms, including nearly 4 kilograms of gold coins, and an estimated value exceeding 7.5 million Czech crowns. Popular Mechanics later described the roughly 15-pound hoard as worth more than $330,000. The Miami Herald gave an approximate conversion of about $340,000. These are reported estimates, not a current appraisal; the dollar figures are approximate conversions reported at different times.
What do the coins reveal about the hoard’s journey?
The coin dates alone do not tell when the containers were buried. A more specific clue comes from marks on some Austro-Hungarian coins: Radio Prague reported that they were restamped after 1921 in local mints in the former Yugoslavia. Museum numismatist Vojtěch Brádle said at least some of those coins could not have been in Czech lands in 1921 and must still have been in the Balkans.

That evidence points to the coins reaching Czechia later, but it does not establish who moved them, when they arrived, or when they were hidden. Brádle described their later journey as occurring “under unknown circumstances” in Radio Prague’s English-language report.
Why were the coins buried?
No motive has been established. Museum archaeologist Miroslav Novák listed several possible contexts: the beginning of war, deportations of Czech and Jewish populations, postwar deportations of Germans, or monetary reform. These are hypotheses, not a confirmed account of the burial.

Brádle said the coins were hidden for their precious-metal content rather than what their face values could buy. That observation helps explain why someone might conceal them, but it does not identify the person or the historical event behind this particular hoard.

The owner has not been identified in the cited reports. They also do not establish the exact burial date, the reason for concealment, or the full route the coins took from the Balkans to Czechia. Nor do they verify a completed public exhibition or a final award to the hikers.
