Yes. In India, if you have two indemnity health insurance policies, you may ask the second insurer to assess eligible hospital expenses left unpaid after a claim under the first—even if the first policy’s sum insured is not exhausted. Payment is not automatic: the second insurer applies its own policy terms, and it may not cover every deduction made by the first insurer.
First check whether both policies cover expenses or pay a fixed benefit
For an indemnity policy, the insurer assesses actual covered hospitalization expenses, subject to that policy’s limits and conditions. You cannot be reimbursed twice for the same expense, but an admissible amount left unpaid under one policy may be considered under another.

A benefit-based policy pays a defined benefit when the insured event occurs, according to its terms. IRDAI says an insured may claim under multiple benefit-based policies. The rules for those benefits differ from sharing reimbursement of a hospital bill. IRDAI’s health insurance guidance explains the distinction and the multiple-policy approach.

If you chose the policy that handled the first claim, that insurer is the primary insurer for settlement. IRDAI says that when the available cover under it is less than the admissible claim amount, the primary insurer should seek details of your other policies and coordinate with the other insurers to settle the balance under the relevant policy conditions.

You may also present a balance claim—or amounts disallowed under the earlier chosen policy—to another insurer even when the first policy’s sum insured has not run out. The second insurer makes its own assessment under its policy; the first insurer’s decision does not guarantee that the second will pay the same amount. See IRDAI’s health insurance FAQs.
How to claim the unpaid amount from the second insurer
-
Get the first insurer’s settlement details
Ask the insurer that processed the first claim for its settlement statement or a written explanation showing what it approved and what remains unpaid, including the reasons for deductions. This helps you describe the balance accurately; it is practical preparation, not a universal IRDAI document checklist.

Tell the second insurer about the first claim
Contact the second insurer and ask how to submit the remaining expenses for assessment under that policy. Disclose the first insurer’s payment and deductions. Ask the insurer to assess the balance; do not frame it as an automatic top-up.

Track the claim and keep the response
Save acknowledgments and the insurer’s written decision. IRDAI’s health department page, which refers to the Master Circular dated 29 May 2024, lists a one-hour limit for deciding cashless preauthorization requests, three hours for cashless final bill authorization after the hospital’s discharge authorization request, and 15 days for non-cashless claims. These are turnaround timelines, not a guarantee that a disputed or ineligible expense will be paid. See IRDAI’s health insurance guidance.
If the second insurer denies or delays the balance
Ask for the decision and the reason for each deduction in writing. IRDAI says a denial or repudiation should state specific reasons, refer to the relevant policy conditions, and provide the insurer’s grievance procedure and the Insurance Ombudsman route. Follow the grievance instructions in the insurer’s communication.
