On April 13, 2023, the companies announced an expansion of Twitter’s $Cashtags feature: users could search for symbols such as $TSLA or $BTC, view market information, and follow a link to eToro to research and potentially invest.
That distinction matters. The trade itself was not described as taking place inside Twitter. Account opening, identity checks, funding, eligibility and order execution remained part of the eToro experience.
What the 2023 Twitter–eToro partnership actually offered
Twitter had already introduced pricing information for selected cashtags in December 2022, using TradingView data. The April 2023 agreement expanded the feature to a wider range of assets available through eToro, including stocks, exchange-traded funds, cryptocurrencies and commodities.
The announced user journey was straightforward:
- Search Twitter for a cashtag, such as $TSLA or $BTC.
- View a live price chart and related market information.
- Click through to eToro for additional details.
- Decide whether to open or use an eToro account and invest, subject to eligibility.
The announcement did not establish a universal button label or a fixed menu path. It described a cashtag search and a click-through to eToro, not a Twitter trading ticket that executed orders on the social network.

What users could—and could not—do

In other words, “Twitter users could trade stocks and crypto directly inside Twitter” is an imprecise summary. Twitter provided discovery, data and a referral path. eToro was the investment destination identified in the announcement.
The scale of the cashtag feature in 2023
eToro’s announcement cited Twitter’s internal figures for January 1 through March 31, 2023:
- More than 420 million cashtag searches worldwide.
- An average of 4.7 million cashtag searches per day.
- 498 million tweets about business and finance during the quarter.
- $TSLA as the most-used cashtag, with $SPY and $BTC also among the five most-used.
Those numbers describe historical Twitter activity. They are not current usage statistics and should not be treated as evidence that every search produced a tradable investment opportunity.
Why seeing a price does not mean you can trade
Several separate conditions have to be satisfied before a user can invest. A cashtag may be recognized by X and display a chart even when the asset cannot be bought through the linked provider.

- The symbol must be recognized. X needs to match the cashtag to an asset.
- Price data must be available. A chart or quote may be displayed.
- The asset must be supported by the investment provider. Recognition on X does not guarantee availability on eToro.
- The provider must operate in the user’s jurisdiction. Products vary by country.
- The user must qualify. Verification, account type, residency and other requirements can apply.
- Local rules must permit the product. Securities and crypto products are subject to different regulatory frameworks.
eToro’s U.S. disclosures illustrate why the provider and product must be identified carefully. Securities trading is offered by eToro USA Securities Inc., while cryptocurrency trading is offered by eToro USA LLC. The U.S. crypto entity is not a registered broker-dealer or FINRA member, and cryptocurrency holdings are not FDIC- or SIPC-insured.
The partnership continued after Twitter became X
Twitter was rebranded as X, but eToro announced on June 12, 2024, that it had renewed its agreement with X for the cashtag feature. The renewed arrangement covered:
- TradingView charting and market data.
- Stocks, cryptoassets and other assets.
- The ability to invest with eToro.
- eToro financial-education content distributed through X posts, videos, livestreams and Spaces.
eToro described the renewed agreement as a title-sponsorship arrangement. The announcement did not say that eToro became X’s exclusive broker, nor did it say that X became a broker.
What changed with X’s 2026 Cashtags update
X launched an updated Cashtags feature on April 14, 2026. At launch, it was available to iPhone users in the United States and Canada. The reported interaction was:

- Search for or post a supported ticker or cryptocurrency contract address.
- Select the matching stock or cryptoasset suggested by X.
- Tap the cashtag in the timeline or search results.
- View real-time pricing or a chart.
- Browse posts and conversations associated with that specific asset.
The initial rollout was not described as available across the web, Android and all countries. Those channels and regions were future expansion areas rather than part of the launch. The public launch information also did not establish a permanent path such as Menu → Finance → Stocks; cashtags in posts, search and the timeline were the documented access points.
Do not confuse eToro with the 2026 Wealthsimple integration
The 2026 update reportedly included a Canadian brokerage route through Wealthsimple. Canadian users could move from the X cashtag experience to Wealthsimple’s trading interface.
That is distinct from the eToro arrangement:

The Canadian Wealthsimple route should not be described as an eToro integration. It also does not make X the broker. X head of product Nikita Bier said in February 2026 that X was not handling trade execution or acting as a brokerage. The relevant trading provider remains responsible for its own brokerage or exchange functions.
Check the exact asset before acting
Cashtags can be ambiguous. A symbol is not always a unique identifier, particularly in cryptocurrency markets. The same letters may refer to a public-company stock, a token or another asset. For example, a symbol such as $SOL should not be assumed to identify one specific instrument without checking the asset presented by the platform.

The updated X experience was designed to reduce this problem by allowing users to select the exact stock, token or smart-contract address. That selection step is important: a familiar ticker can still point to the wrong asset if the user does not verify the name, asset class and provider listing.

- “Twitter launched its own stock and crypto exchange.” No. The 2023 announcement described market information and a route to eToro.
- “Users bought stocks directly inside Twitter in 2023.” Overstated. The user was directed to eToro, where account and trading activity took place.
- “Every cashtag represented a tradable asset.” False. Recognition, pricing, provider support, jurisdiction and eligibility were separate questions.
- “The eToro agreement means every X user currently trades through eToro.” Not established. Routing can depend on location, device, asset and the feature rollout available to the account.
- “X executes crypto trades itself.” Not verified. X has said it is not acting as the executing broker.
How to interpret the partnership today
The most accurate description is that Twitter, later X, used cashtags to connect financial conversations with market data and external investment providers. eToro supplied the announced investment destination in 2023 and renewed its X cashtag agreement in 2024. The later X update added new functionality and, in Canada, a reported Wealthsimple trading route.
Before treating a chart or link as an investment opportunity, check four things: the exact asset, the provider named in the flow, the product’s availability in your country and the protections or regulatory status that apply. A price display is informational; it is not a guarantee that an order can be placed or that the asset is suitable for your circumstances.
FAQ
Did Twitter partner with eToro to let users trade stocks directly on Twitter?
The April 2023 partnership expanded Twitter’s cashtag market-data feature and directed users to eToro to research and potentially invest. The announcement did not describe Twitter as executing trades inside its own brokerage system.

Is X a stockbroker or cryptocurrency exchange?
X is not currently confirmed to be the executing broker. X’s head of product said the platform was providing financial-data tools and links rather than handling trade execution. External providers remain responsible for brokerage or exchange activity.
Can every X user buy an asset shown by a cashtag?
No. Availability depends on whether X recognizes the asset, whether the provider supports it, the user’s jurisdiction, account verification and eligibility, and applicable securities or crypto regulations.
Is the 2026 Wealthsimple integration the same as the eToro partnership?
No. The reported Wealthsimple trading route is a separate Canadian integration associated with the 2026 X Cashtags update. It should not be described as an eToro integration.
What should I check before using a cashtag trading link?
Confirm the asset’s full name and type, verify the provider you are being sent to, review local availability and fees, and understand which entity is providing the securities or crypto service and what protections apply.

Bottom line: The 2023 Twitter–eToro deal expanded financial information and created a route from cashtags to eToro. It did not turn Twitter into a broker or let the platform execute trades itself. eToro renewed its X agreement in 2024, while X’s 2026 Cashtags update introduced separate functionality and a reported Wealthsimple trading route for Canadian users.
