The Twitch breach behind headlines about million-dollar streamer incomes happened on October 6–7, 2021. Twitch later confirmed that an unauthorized party accessed internal material, including a subset of creator-payout data. The widely reported figures—about $9.63 million attributed to the Critical Role channel and $8.45 million to xQcOW—were Twitch payments over roughly August 2019 through October 2021, not annual salaries, total income or take-home pay. Twitch said passwords, full credit-card numbers and ACH or bank information were not exposed.
What happened in the 2021 Twitch breach?
Reports of a large archive of Twitch files appeared online on October 6, 2021. Twitch acknowledged a security incident on October 6–7 and said an unauthorized third party had accessed data. In its fuller update on October 15, Twitch attributed the incident to an error in a server-configuration change that allowed improper access. The company described the exposed material as primarily source-code documents and a subset of creator-payout data—not proof that every Twitch system or user record was taken. Twitch’s October 15 incident update
- October 6, 2021: Reports emerged that an archive of Twitch material had been posted online.
- October 6–7: Twitch confirmed an incident and said it was investigating.
- October 7: Twitch reset stream keys as a precaution.
- October 15: Twitch published its account of the cause, exposed categories and security response.
The uploader claimed the archive was exceptionally broad. News coverage also described internal development material beyond the payout figures. Those claims should be distinguished from Twitch’s narrower public description of what it confirmed after reviewing the incident.
What information was exposed—and what did Twitch say was not?
| Information | What is established |
|---|---|
| Source code and repository material | Twitch confirmed source-code documents were among the exposed material. Twitch |
| Creator-payout data | Twitch confirmed that a subset of creator-payout data was exposed. Coverage of the leaked files reported figures covering August 2019 through October 2021. TechCrunch |
| Software kits, client and internal-service code, and an unreleased Amazon Games project | These were described in news coverage of the files; they are not all categories Twitch itemized in its incident update. The unreleased project was reported as codenamed “Vapor.” The Washington Post |
| Twitch passwords and credential-storage systems | Twitch said passwords were not exposed and systems storing login credentials were not accessed. It said credentials were hashed using bcrypt. Twitch |
| Full credit-card numbers and ACH or bank information | Twitch said full credit-card numbers were not exposed and that ACH and bank information were not accessed. These are Twitch’s post-investigation conclusions. Twitch |
“No financial information leaked” would be too broad: creator-payout data is financial information. Twitch’s statement was specifically that full card numbers and ACH or bank details were not exposed.

Which creators had the largest reported Twitch payouts?
News organizations analyzing the leaked figures reported the following two largest account totals for the period beginning in August 2019 and ending in October 2021:
| Account | Reported Twitch payouts | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Critical Role | Approximately $9,626,712 | Payments attributed to the Critical Role Twitch account, not one performer’s personal income or the production’s profit. TechCrunch; Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg |
| xQcOW (xQc) | Approximately $8,454,427 | Payments attributed to the channel during the reported period, not a complete account of the creator’s earnings. TechCrunch |
Critical Role is a multi-person entertainment production with a cast and production operation, so its channel total is not directly comparable with one individual creator’s payout. Accounts can represent teams or businesses; an account-to-person ranking is not automatically a ranking of personal wealth.

Why “million-dollar income” is an imprecise description
The leaked figures are best described as reported direct Twitch payouts during a historical period. They are not salaries, audited personal-income statements or net profit. The public dataset did not come with a complete official explanation of its accounting fields, so the exact treatment of every payment category should not be assumed. Coverage associated the payouts with platform-derived money such as subscriptions, advertising and Bits, but a channel total still does not establish what its owner ultimately kept.
The figures do not provide a complete picture of a creator’s finances. The leaked payout data could not, by itself, show income from:

- Sponsorships and brand deals.
- Merchandise, Patreon or similar memberships, and donations handled outside Twitch.
- YouTube or other platforms, esports winnings and appearance fees.
- Books, podcasts, television, film, licensing or private contracts.
- Separate exclusivity or signing payments, where applicable.
Nor do platform payments show taxes, staff and production costs, agents’ or managers’ fees, equipment, rent or other business expenses. A creator lower on a Twitch-payout list could have greater total revenue through other work; the figures cannot settle that comparison. Tipalti/Sports Tech World Series report
How reliable were the payout figures?
Twitch confirmed that some creator-payout data was exposed, and multiple creators reportedly said at least some published amounts appeared accurate. That supports treating the figures as reported platform-payment data, but not as independently audited personal-income statements. Twitch did not publicly explain every field, account match or alias in the leaked dataset. Some creators questioned whether particular totals matched their own dashboards. - Gradient RGB Symphony Lights: Cyclic and gradient RGB lights, in line with your live broadcast aesthetics. Bring you an immersive gaming experience and awaken all your senses. There is a 3.5MM headphone jack in the middle, you can plug in the headphones to monitor your own voice in real-time and make adjustments in time when recording.
- Cardioid Polar Pattern: This microphone features a cardioid polar pattern that captures crisp, smooth, and clear sound in front of the microphone, reducing side pickup so it can focus on your voice. - SOLID FIT: With a weighted carbon steel base, your big movements won't knock the mic down, even during intense gaming sessions. The detachable metal anti-splash screen is adopted. Compared with the sponge, the metal anti-splash screen can filter the plosive sound more effectively. - Plug and Play:PC gaming microphone for streaming, compatible with PS4/PS4pro/PS5 desktop and laptop. You can quickly enter the game chat. The 180CM long detachable USB data cable can be extended from the back of the computer host to the main body of your gaming USB microphone without limitation.
Rankings reproduced from social-media charts add another layer of uncertainty: they can contain transcription mistakes, duplicate accounts or mistaken assumptions about who controls a channel. Contract terms may also differ, and a single person may use multiple accounts while one account may represent a company or group. The two widely reported figures above are useful examples, not a full or definitive ranking of creators’ wealth.

The payout data attracted attention because it offered an unusually visible look at money flowing directly from a major streaming platform to creators. One TechCrunch analysis estimated that the top 10 percent of the 10,000 highest-paid accounts received about 49 percent of the earnings in that dataset. That is an estimate from an analysis of the leaked data, not an official Twitch statistic or a measure of the entire creator economy. TechCrunch

Even with those limits, the concentration helps explain why a small set of visible channels can appear to dominate the business. Platform payouts reveal one source of creator revenue and the scale it can reach at the top; they do not reveal the earnings of every streamer or the full economics of any one channel. The much larger group of smaller creators is not represented by a list limited to the highest-paid accounts.
What Twitch did, and what users were advised to do in 2021
Twitch said it fixed the configuration issue, secured affected systems, reviewed exposed files and contacted affected users directly. It also reset stream keys as a precaution and said only a small fraction of users were affected. In its 2021 guidance, Twitch said users could obtain a new key in the dashboard. OBS users who had connected their Twitch account generally did not need to update it manually; those who had not connected the account might need to copy the replacement key themselves. Twitch’s incident update
The following were sensible precautions in response to that historical incident, not a claim that Twitch passwords had been leaked:
Quick Recap
- Change a Twitch password reused on another service.
- Enable two-factor authentication and review connected applications, removing any unfamiliar access.
- Be alert to phishing that uses account or payout information to sound convincing.
- Do not download or redistribute leaked archives, and avoid circulating creators’ payout figures without context.
