Whether it suits your trip depends on the exact car, pickup arrangement, total checkout price, protection terms, and cancellation policy. Turo’s US pages explain those terms, but they do not establish that Turo is universally cheaper or more reliable than traditional rentals.
How Turo works
On Turo’s US marketplace, guests browse host-listed vehicles and book a specific car. Pickup may be in person, through a lockbox, or through the vehicle maker’s app, depending on the listing. You need an account, a valid driver’s license, and Turo’s approval to drive. Turo states that the minimum age to book in the US is 18, but approval and vehicle-specific requirements still apply. Only the primary driver may book; anyone else who will drive must be approved and added to the trip. Review eligibility before relying on a particular car for your plans. Turo’s US marketplace
What to check before you book
- Vehicle and handoff: Confirm the car’s location, pickup method, and whether delivery is offered and costs extra.
- Eligibility: Make sure the primary driver meets Turo’s approval rules and the vehicle’s requirements; add any additional driver through the trip before they drive.
- Full trip total: Compare the checkout amount, including the selected protection plan and any delivery fee. Hosts may offer weekly or monthly discounts, but the total depends on the car and trip.
- Cancellation terms: Check the policy attached to the booking, especially if you select a non-refundable discount or book close to the trip start.
- Protection details: Read the plan’s terms and the out-of-pocket limit shown at checkout rather than assuming all damage is covered or capped.
Protection and insurance are not the same thing
For US trips, Turo says third-party liability coverage is included under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company. Separately, guests choose among protection plans offered for their trip. Turo lists Premier, Standard, and Minimum, but available choices and terms can depend on eligibility and trip details. Turo describes guest protection plans as contracts, not insurance. They limit responsibility for eligible physical damage to the host’s vehicle, but do not cap responsibility for interior or mechanical damage. The checkout page displays the available plan, its price, and the out-of-pocket limit for eligible physical damage. Personal insurance that covers damage to the host’s vehicle may apply before a Turo protection plan, and state-specific rules matter. How Turo pricing compares
There is no universal Turo price in the available terms: the vehicle, trip dates, location, delivery, protection selection, and any host discounts all affect the total. Compare the final checkout price with a conventional rental for the same dates and pickup area, a similar vehicle class, comparable protection, and similar cancellation terms. The lower advertised daily rate alone may not identify the lower-cost option. Turo’s pages do not establish a general savings or reliability advantage over rental companies.

Cancellation policy for guests
Turo’s US marketplace says guests can generally cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours before the trip starts, unless they booked using a non-refundable discount. For a trip booked less than 24 hours before its start, the guest has one hour after booking to cancel free of charge. A fee may apply after the free-cancellation period. Roadside assistance and support
Turo advertises 24/7 customer support and roadside assistance for trips. That promise should not be read as a guarantee of an immediate response, a free tow in every situation, or a replacement vehicle. How hosts earn—and what host protection means
For hosts, Turo’s US guide lists three plans in most markets. The trip-price share and per-trip damage responsibility shown below can vary in named markets and with booking lead time, so hosts should verify the terms that apply to their location and reservation. These are the figures Turo lists for most US markets, not a guarantee of what every host will receive or owe; market and booking lead-time variations apply. Damage reimbursement remains subject to terms and exclusions. Turo says hosts should take clear condition photos before and after each trip and report damage within 24 hours of trip end to support eligibility. When Turo may fit—and when to compare alternatives
Turo can be a practical option if a particular host-listed car, pickup method, delivery option, and trip terms work for you. A conventional rental may be easier to assess if you prefer a company’s fleet and standardized pickup process. Neither option is automatically the better value: compare the exact trip and terms rather than relying on a general claim about price or reliability.
