On 10 August 2026, Derby said Lion Sport no longer wished to proceed and declared the club “off the market.” Alalshikh cited the timing and said there was too little time to prepare the club and team for the season.
What happened to the Derby County takeover bid?
The proposal was for Lion Sport, associated with Alalshikh, to buy a controlling interest in Derby County. The club said it received notice on 10 August 2026 that Lion Sport no longer wanted to continue discussions. Derby’s statement said: “For the benefit of any doubt, the club is now off the market.” The BBC reported that the proposed purchase had been in the regulatory process since May and had been sanctioned by the English Football League and the Independent Football Regulator before Lion Sport withdrew. This was a proposed transaction, not a completed takeover. Derby said it would continue under the support of Clowes Developments.
Why did Alalshikh say Lion Sport would not proceed?
Alalshikh’s stated reason was that the season had already started, leaving insufficient time to prepare the team and club. He said: “After careful consideration, we don’t feel it is right to proceed at this time without the necessary preparation in place, but we will remain in conversation with the club and see what is possible in the future.” That is his explanation for the decision; it does not establish a separate or independently verified motive. What did the football regulator decide?
The Independent Football Regulator said it completed its assessment in 55 days, within the 90 days allowed by law, and had communicated a “minded-to decision” to approve the bid before the start of the 2026–27 season. A minded-to decision was a provisional regulatory position, not a completed purchase. The regulator’s assessment and Lion Sport’s decision not to continue were separate developments. An IFR spokesperson said: “The IFR has a statutory duty to thoroughly test all prospective owners of a club in the top five divisions of men’s football.”
