TSMC Initially Assessed Damage After Taiwan’s 2024 Earthquake. Here’s What Happened Next

TSMC’s 2024 Taiwan earthquake response caused wafer scrap and about NT$3 billion in net losses, but no structural or critical-tool damage and no prolonged global chip shortage.

TSMC’s “still assessing” warning referred to the April 3, 2024 earthquake in Taiwan—not a current 2026 event. The quake prompted evacuations and temporary production interruptions at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., but later disclosures showed no structural damage to its fabs, no damage to critical EUV tools, and rapid equipment recovery. The main confirmed impact was scrapped work-in-progress wafers and approximately NT$3 billion in earthquake-related losses, net of insurance.

What happened at TSMC?

A major earthquake struck off Taiwan’s eastern coast near Hualien on April 3, 2024. Contemporary reports commonly described it as magnitude 7.4, while TSMC’s later earnings-call transcript referred to a magnitude-7.2 event. Differences like this can reflect reporting agencies and measurement methods; they do not indicate separate earthquakes.

The quake was east of Taiwan’s main semiconductor-manufacturing concentrations, including the Hsinchu area. It was widely described at the time as Taiwan’s strongest earthquake in roughly 25 years.

TSMC activated its earthquake-safety procedures, evacuated some employees, and paused or interrupted certain operations while it inspected facilities and equipment. In its initial statement, the company said it was still assessing the impact and expected some production to resume overnight. That early uncertainty was important, but it was not evidence that the fabs had suffered catastrophic damage.

Contemporary reporting also said United Microelectronics Corp. paused manufacturing and that other companies in Taiwan’s semiconductor ecosystem took precautionary measures.

Why “still assessing” matters in a chip fab

A semiconductor facility cannot be judged only by whether its building is standing. Advanced chipmaking depends on extremely precise equipment and tightly controlled processes. After a vibration event, engineers may need to verify tool alignment, calibration, contamination controls, power quality, utilities, vibration levels, and process integrity.

Even if a machine appears undamaged, wafers already moving through production may no longer meet quality requirements. Restarting equipment is therefore not identical to restoring normal output: production must be checked and validated before a manufacturer can rely on expected yields.

These are general semiconductor-manufacturing risks, not a claim that every possible failure occurred during this earthquake. TSMC’s confirmed losses included wafers in process that had to be scrapped.

How quickly did TSMC recover?

TSMC’s later account was substantially less alarming than the initial breaking-news uncertainty:

  • TSMC reported no structural damage to its fabs.
  • It reported no power outages and no damage to critical equipment, including EUV lithography tools.
  • Some wafers already in production were scrapped.
  • The company expected to recover most lost production during the second quarter of 2024.

An interim follow-up report said more than 80% of factory equipment had been restored the day after the quake, although some production lines needed additional time. That was a progress update, not the final recovery figure.

TSMC’s first-quarter 2024 earnings-call transcript provides the later company account.

What did the earthquake cost TSMC?

Rapid recovery did not mean zero financial impact. TSMC later reported approximately NT$3 billion in earthquake-related losses, net of insurance claims. The losses were associated primarily with inventory, plant facilities, machinery and equipment, wafer scrap, and material losses.

TSMC also said the earthquake reduced its second-quarter 2024 gross margin by approximately 50 basis points, or 0.5 percentage points. A short operational interruption can be expensive because a wafer may represent substantial processing time and materials before a problem makes it unusable.

The figure appears in TSMC’s 2024 annual report and 2024 consolidated financial statements.

Did the quake cause a global chip shortage?

The available evidence does not support saying that this earthquake caused a broad, prolonged global chip shortage.

The concern was legitimate. TSMC is a leading contract manufacturer for fabless chip designers, and its customers include Apple, Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm, MediaTek, and others. A serious disruption to advanced-node production could affect smartphones, computers, artificial-intelligence infrastructure, vehicles, and other electronics worldwide.

But customer exposure is not the same as documented customer damage. There is no basis here for claiming that Apple, Nvidia, AMD, or another named customer suffered a product shortage because of this event. TSMC’s later disclosures instead indicated rapid equipment recovery, no damage to critical tools, and an expectation that most lost production would be recovered in the same quarter.

The accurate conclusion is that the quake briefly raised global supply-chain concerns, but its operational impact was limited and recoverable rather than a confirmed worldwide chip-supply collapse.

What the event revealed about Taiwan’s chip supply chain

Vulnerability: concentrated, precision-dependent production

High-end chip manufacturing is geographically concentrated and sensitive to interruptions. The risk is not limited to a fab collapsing. Other potential problems include unstable electricity or water supplies, damaged suppliers, packaging and testing delays, transportation disruption, workforce-access problems, aftershocks, contamination, tool-calibration issues, and yield problems discovered only after production resumes.

For this specific earthquake, TSMC directly confirmed wafer scrap and material and equipment-related losses. The other risks are industry-relevant failure modes, not confirmed damage from this event.

TSMC’s annual report says most of its production facilities, suppliers, customers, and complementary manufacturing providers are located in areas exposed to natural-disaster risks. It also identifies possible shortages or interruptions involving electricity and water as operational risks.

Resilience: preparation and fast recovery

The same concentration that creates risk also helps explain TSMC’s resilience. The company had evacuation procedures, disaster drills, seismic protections, and recovery processes in place. TSMC says it has continued strengthening earthquake response, tool anchorage, seismic isolation, tool salvage, and production-recovery capabilities.

The outcome demonstrated that an earthquake can interrupt a highly complex production network without destroying its most critical infrastructure. Evacuation was a safety response, not proof of catastrophic damage; equipment recovery was rapid, even though production recovery still involved scrapped wafers and quality validation.

Could overseas fabs eliminate the risk?

Geographic diversification can reduce dependence on Taiwan for some capacity, but it is not an instant substitute for Taiwan’s semiconductor ecosystem. New fabs must be built, qualified, supplied, staffed, and ramped. They also introduce their own risks involving construction, permitting, utilities, labor, cost, and production scale.

It would therefore be inaccurate to say that TSMC’s overseas facilities could immediately replace Taiwan-based production or eliminate earthquake risk. The 2024 event supports diversification as a long-term resilience strategy, not as proof that geographic concentration can be quickly removed.

What investors and households should take from the event

For investors, the important distinction is between a temporary operational shock and a persistent earnings or supply-chain problem. TSMC’s reported NT$3 billion net loss and 50-basis-point margin effect show that the quake had a real business cost. Its rapid recovery and lack of critical-tool damage show why the event did not become a prolonged industry crisis.

For households, the event did not establish a reason to expect a general electronics shortage or immediate price shock. Its broader lesson is about concentration risk: natural disasters, utility disruptions, logistics problems, and geopolitical events can affect companies and markets far beyond the location where the disruption begins.

Bottom line

TSMC initially had to evacuate workers, pause some operations, and inspect its facilities after Taiwan’s April 3, 2024 earthquake. The later record was reassuring but not cost-free: more than 70% of equipment was recovered within 10 hours, recovery was complete by day three, and TSMC reported no structural or critical-tool damage. Some wafers were scrapped, producing approximately NT$3 billion in net losses and a roughly 0.5-point gross-margin effect. The earthquake exposed Taiwan’s importance to global chip supply—but it did not cause a confirmed, prolonged global chip shortage.
