TSM is Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited’s New York Stock Exchange ticker for its American depositary shares (ADSs); TSMC’s ordinary shares trade in Taiwan as 2330. One TSM ADS represents five ordinary shares, so compare equivalent quantities—not one ticker’s share price against the other’s.
What TSM, TSMC and 2330 refer to
“TSMC” is the issuer’s name. Its ordinary shares have traded on the Taiwan Stock Exchange under ticker 2330 since September 5, 1994. Its ADSs have traded on the NYSE under ticker TSM since October 8, 1997, according to the company’s investor FAQ. The company’s stock-quote page also lists the exchange symbols.
An ADS is a U.S.-traded security representing shares held through a depositary arrangement. TSMC’s 2025 Form 20-F says one ADS represents five of the company’s common shares. That ratio is essential when comparing quotes: one TSM ADS corresponds to five 2330 ordinary shares, not one.
How to compare TSM and 2330 prices
A quote comparison needs equivalent share quantities, a currency conversion and clear timestamps. The listings trade in different markets and currencies, and their trading hours do not fully overlap. A screenshot that omits its time and exchange-rate method cannot establish a meaningful premium.

- Record the TSM ADS price in U.S. dollars and the 2330 ordinary-share price in Taiwan dollars, with the date and time for each quote.
- Multiply the 2330 price by five to find the Taiwan-dollar value of the five ordinary shares represented by one ADS.
- Convert that five-share value into U.S. dollars using a stated USD/TWD exchange rate appropriate to the comparison time.
- Compare the converted five-share value with one TSM ADS quote, noting any mismatch in market hours or timestamps.
This calculation describes a price difference at particular times; it does not prove that investors can capture it. TSMC’s 2025 Form 20-F says the ability to deposit ordinary shares into the ADS program is limited and warns that the ADS market price may differ from the equivalent value of the ordinary shares. The filing’s explanation is narrower than claims that a particular premium is typical or that arbitrage is always available.
Why Reddit debates apparent premiums
Reddit investors have asked both how the NYSE ADS differs from Taiwan-listed stock and why an ADS appeared to trade at a premium. One thread includes the question, “Why is the adr trading at a $25 premium over the shares on the Taiwan exchange??” That was a reader’s observation posted in May 2025, not a current quote or a verified calculation. The underlying discussions include guesses about demand, supply, market access, taxes, exchange hours and conversion constraints; those comments are useful evidence of investor concerns, not proof of why a specific price gap occurred. See the Reddit comparison discussion and the May 2025 price-discrepancy thread.
No current premium can be inferred from those historical posts. To evaluate a gap today, use timestamped quotes, the five-to-one ratio and an explicit exchange rate, while accounting for when each market was open.
Investor access, rights, costs and tax
Brokerage access
Which listing is practical depends partly on whether a brokerage account permits trading NYSE-listed ADSs, Taiwan-listed ordinary shares, or both. Access and any related costs vary by broker; check its current rules and fee schedule rather than assuming the two listings are equally available.
Rank #3
Shareholder rights
Ordinary shareholders and ADS holders do not use identical procedures. TSMC’s 2025 Form 20-F says ADS holders generally exercise voting rights through the depositary, and do not individually propose matters for shareholder votes in the same way as holders of ordinary shares. Review the filing’s description of ADS-holder procedures and rights before treating the securities as operationally interchangeable.
Dividend withholding and personal taxes
TSMC’s investor FAQ states a 21% Taiwan withholding rate on dividends paid to ADS holders. The company’s 2025 Form 20-F discusses treaty and holder-category qualifications, and the FAQ advises shareholders to seek advice about their particular tax consequences. That stated withholding rate alone does not determine an investor’s final tax bill: residence, account type and other individual circumstances matter.
Rank #4
Currency and transaction costs
Both listings represent exposure to the same issuer, but a 2330 investor transacts in Taiwan dollars while a TSM investor trades the ADS in U.S. dollars. Conversion costs, commissions, custody charges and any applicable depositary fees depend on the investor’s broker and circumstances. Check the relevant current terms before comparing the total cost of holding or trading either listing.

There is no universal winner based on the ticker alone. The relevant choice depends on access, currency needs, trading costs and whether the investor values the ordinary-share route or the ADS route. The securities represent the same company, but they differ in market, trading currency and some holder procedures. Neither a price snapshot nor an online claim about a standing premium establishes which one is preferable for a particular investor.
