In October 1999, TRW Components International Inc. (TRWCI), a TRW unit, and Cubic Memory Inc. announced plans to combine as Vertical Circuits Inc. (VCI), a company intended to develop dense stacked-memory products. The proposed approach put semiconductor dies or wafer segments together vertically and horizontally, without individual chip carriers. The announcement described a business plan and company claims—not proof that products shipped or met the claims.

What company did TRWCI and Cubic Memory plan to form?

EE Times reported on October 29, 1999, that Cubic Memory and TRWCI would combine to form Vertical Circuits Inc. Cubic Memory was to contribute its patented ultra-dense packaging technology. TRWCI was described as bringing spacecraft and electronic products, product lines, production control, marketing capability, and international customer relationships. EE Times’ October 29, 1999 report

Peter Friedli, Cubic Memory’s chairman, said the move was “a very important and positive step forward for us.” Timothy W. Hannemann, executive vice president and general manager of TRW’s Space & Electronics Group, called the formation a key element in TRW’s strategy. These were the executives’ views at the announcement, not independent assessments of VCI’s prospects.

How was the stacked-memory technology supposed to work?

The proposed packaging method stacked and interconnected multiple semiconductor dies or multi-die wafer segments. Rather than placing each die in its own chip carrier, the design aimed to integrate memory layers into a more compact assembly. Stacking in both vertical and horizontal directions was intended to increase memory density within a small physical footprint.

VCI said the approach could also improve performance and reduce cost per megabyte. The EE Times report supplied no benchmark results, measured comparisons, or independent validation for those claims, so they should be understood as company claims rather than demonstrated outcomes.

What applications and market did VCI target?

The announced target markets included computers, workstations, satellite communications, wireless phones, and other digital consumer products. Those were prospective applications; the report does not establish sales, deployment, or adoption in any of them.

EE Times reported that VCI’s founders projected an annual market of $1.25 billion. That figure was a founders’ forecast reported in 1999, not an independently established market size or a current estimate of demand.

What funding was reported?

EE Times said investors organized by Friedli invested several million dollars in working capital for an equity position in VCI. The report did not give an exact amount. It does not provide further financial detail about the company.

What is known about VCI’s results?

The 1999 announcement describes the planned combination, the technology concept, and intended markets. It does not establish VCI’s later corporate history or present-day status, whether the proposed products reached market, or how their performance compared with the company’s claims. The announcement therefore documents an intended venture, not evidence of a successful product launch.
