Hanna Andersson’s January 15, 2020 notice said malware on its third-party ecommerce platform may have scraped information entered at checkout between September 16 and November 11, 2019. The company said not all customers who purchased during that period were affected, but it could not identify which specific customers may have been affected.
What happened in the Hanna Andersson data breach?
In a notice dated January 15, 2020, Hanna Andersson said law enforcement had informed it on December 5, 2019, that credit cards used on its website were being offered for sale on a dark web site. The company’s investigation confirmed malware on its third-party ecommerce platform, Salesforce Commerce Cloud. Hanna said the malware may have captured information entered during online purchases.
Forensic investigators identified September 16, 2019, as the earliest potential compromise date. The notice said the malware was removed on November 11, 2019. Those dates describe the potential exposure window identified in the company’s notice, not proof that every transaction in that period was affected. California’s breach registry lists September 16, 2019, as the breach date and January 15, 2020, as the report date; California notes that registry entries contain sample notifications and that the notifier may not always be the organization where an incident originated.

The notice did not identify specific customers whose information was affected. Hanna said its investigation indicated that not all customers who purchased through the website during the period were affected, but it could not determine which customers those were. It therefore notified all potentially affected customers as a precaution. This does not mean that every purchaser had information stolen.
What did Hanna Andersson advise customers to do?
The company advised customers to review account statements for suspicious or unusual activity and report it promptly to their bank. Its notice also said Hanna had retained forensic experts, was cooperating with law enforcement and payment card brands, and had taken steps to re-secure and further harden the online purchasing platform. Those are the company’s descriptions of its response, not an independent assessment of the effectiveness of its security measures.

A plaintiffs’ motion filed November 19, 2020, described a proposed settlement for U.S. residents who purchased from Hanna Andersson’s website between September 16 and November 11, 2019. The motion estimated approximately 200,273 people in the proposed class and described a proposed $400,000 settlement fund.

The proposed class notice said the fund would cover settlement costs and valid claims, and that a basic award could be up to $500, subject to adjustment based on the number of valid claims. The defendants denied the claims. The notice also said a settlement would not mean the defendants had done anything wrong and that the court had not decided the merits. These figures and terms describe a proposal in 2020; they do not establish the settlement’s present administration status or whether a claim can still be filed.
