On March 11, 2025, President Donald Trump praised Tesla at a White House event, said he would buy one of its vehicles, and said he would leave it for staff to use. The official record describes the gathering as a Tesla viewing, not an advertisement. The appearance drew criticism from Democratic lawmakers, who questioned whether public resources had been used to promote the company; their letters raised concerns but did not establish a legal violation.
What happened at the White House
Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk appeared beside Tesla vehicles on the White House South Lawn on March 11, 2025. The White House published photographs, and the presidential transcript records remarks at a Tesla viewing and an exchange with reporters. The White House event record documents the setting and remarks.
Trump praised the vehicles and Musk. He said: “Well, I’m going to buy. And I’m going to buy because, number one, it’s a great product, as good as it gets.” He also said he would leave the car at the White House for staff to use. Those statements document his announced intention, not a completed purchase or subsequent staff use.
Why the event was described as an ad
Calling the appearance an “ad” is a characterization of what it looked like to critics and observers, not the White House’s official label. The official record calls it a Tesla viewing. Trump’s public praise and purchase announcement gave the event a promotional character, but those facts alone do not establish that it was a paid advertisement or determine whether any rules were violated.

What Musk said about Tesla production
Musk, then serving as a White House senior adviser as well as Tesla CEO, said: “I want to say, as a function of the great policies of President Trump and his administration, and as an act of faith in America, Tesla is going to double vehicle output in the United States within the next 2 years.” The March 11 transcript records this as Musk’s forecast. It is not evidence that production later doubled. As of October 4, 2026, the forecast’s two-year horizon had not elapsed.

The event occurred amid criticism of Musk’s government role and of Tesla. On March 12, Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee wrote to White House Counsel, questioning whether the appearance used White House resources to endorse Tesla and requesting information. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Adam Schiff also expressed concern that Musk, alongside Trump, had used his official role and White House resources to promote the company.
