Re:

Trump’s Tariffs Put Pressure on Switch 2 Prices—but the Console Hasn’t Gone Up Yet

The Switch 2 console did not immediately get a tariff-driven price hike, but Nintendo raised selected accessory and hardware prices. Here’s what buyers should know about the total cost.

Short answer: Nintendo’s Switch 2 launched in the U.S. at $449.99, and Nintendo said that system price remained unchanged after tariff uncertainty. But tariffs have already affected Nintendo’s broader pricing decisions: selected older Switch products, Switch 2 accessories, amiibo, and the Alarmo device received price adjustments effective August 3, 2025.

That means the clearest risk is not necessarily a sudden surcharge on the console itself. It is a more expensive complete setup—including controllers, storage, games, subscriptions, repairs, and other imported electronics.

What happened to the Switch 2 price?

Nintendo announced a U.S. launch price of $449.99 for the Switch 2, with the console launching on June 5, 2025. After President Donald Trump’s April 2, 2025 tariff announcement, Nintendo postponed U.S. preorders while it assessed tariffs and changing market conditions. Preorders began April 24, and Nintendo kept the announced console price at that time.

The timeline matters:

  • April 2, 2025: Broad reciprocal tariffs were announced.
  • April 9: Nintendo delayed planned U.S. preorders.
  • April 24: U.S. preorders opened at the announced price.
  • June 5: Switch 2 launched at $449.99.
  • August 3: Selected Nintendo products and accessories became more expensive.

Reports from The Associated Press and Tom’s Hardware documented the preorder delay and launch pricing. Nintendo’s own pricing notice said the Switch 2 system, Switch and Switch 2 games, and Nintendo Switch Online memberships would remain unchanged “at this time,” while warning that future adjustments could become necessary.

What Nintendo actually raised

Nintendo’s August 2025 notice confirmed price changes for:

  • The original Nintendo Switch
  • The Nintendo Switch OLED Model
  • Nintendo Switch Lite
  • Selected Nintendo Switch accessories
  • Selected Switch 2 accessories
  • Certain amiibo
  • Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo

Contemporary reporting said affected Switch 2 accessories, including the Joy-Con 2 pair, Pro Controller, and camera, rose by approximately $5 each. Check the official Nintendo store for current prices because retailer pricing, promotions, and later changes can vary.

Nintendo attributed the changes to “market conditions,” not to a published tariff-by-tariff calculation. The evidence supports three separate statements:

  • Confirmed: Certain products became more expensive.
  • Likely context: Tariff uncertainty and supply-chain costs influenced Nintendo’s decisions.
  • Unknown: How much of any individual increase reflected tariffs.

It would be misleading to say Nintendo passed a specific tariff directly and dollar-for-dollar to consumers.

Why the console price could stay at $449.99

A tariff is a cost shock, but it does not automatically produce an identical retail-price increase. Nintendo could preserve the launch price for several business reasons: a launch-price increase could weaken demand, inventory may have been assembled or contracted before policy changes, and the company may have shifted sourcing or spread higher costs across other products.

These are plausible mechanisms, not confirmed explanations from Nintendo. Bloomberg’s analysis showed U.S. video-game-console imports shifting sharply away from China toward Vietnam in 2025. That may reduce exposure to China-specific duties, but it does not make a product tariff-proof. A Vietnam-assembled console can contain components from China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and other countries, and the applicable treatment depends on customs rules, classification, origin, exclusions, and the date of import.

Final assembly is also not the same thing as the origin of every part. No public source establishes the exact tariff bill for a Switch 2 console.

Who pays a tariff?

U.S. Customs and Border Protection collects tariffs from the U.S. importer—not directly from the shopper at checkout. The importer and other businesses in the supply chain then decide how to respond. They may:

  1. Absorb the cost through lower margins.
  2. Raise wholesale or retail prices.
  3. Reduce discounts and promotions.
  4. Change suppliers or manufacturing locations.
  5. Delay shipments or orders.
  6. Recover costs through accessories, software, subscriptions, or other products.

As a result, a tariff rate cannot simply be applied to the $449.99 sticker price. Tariffs generally use a customs value under a specific product classification, not the final retail price. A claimed “10% tariff” or “145% tariff” therefore does not automatically mean a $44.99 or $652.49 consumer price increase.

The total Switch 2 cost matters more than the headline MSRP

A buyer may need or want more than the console:

  • A game
  • Extra controllers
  • A carrying case
  • Expanded storage
  • A camera or charging accessory
  • Nintendo Switch Online
  • Sales tax or other local fees

That is why a stable console price can coexist with a more expensive ownership experience. A buyer who purchases several accessories may feel increases more sharply than someone who buys only the base system.

Switch 2’s storage requirements also matter. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express cards for expanded storage. Ordinary microSD cards that worked with the original Switch are not the correct general expansion-storage purchase for Switch 2.

Can existing Switch accessories save money?

Some original accessories remain useful. Nintendo says original Joy-Con controllers can work wirelessly with Switch 2, and the original Switch Pro Controller can be used. Compatibility is not universal, however. The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2, and some accessories may work only in particular modes.

Check Nintendo’s compatibility information before buying replacements. Reusing compatible equipment can reduce upgrade costs, while assuming everything carries over can lead to an unwanted purchase.

What about game prices?

In its August 2025 notice, Nintendo said Switch and Switch 2 game prices were unchanged at that time. Separately, Nintendo announced that beginning in May 2026, new Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to Switch 2 would have an MSRP different from their physical versions. Nintendo attributes that distinction to different production and distribution costs.

That policy should not automatically be described as a tariff increase. Physical games involve manufacturing, packaging, shipping, and retail distribution; digital games have different cost structures. Retailers may also set their own prices for physical and digital products. Details are available in Nintendo’s game-pricing support information.

“Trump’s tariffs” are not one permanent rate

The applicable tariff can depend on the policy involved, the product, its country of origin, and when it enters the United States. Relevant measures can include:

  • China-related tariffs
  • Section 301 duties
  • Section 232 actions
  • Temporary suspensions or exclusions
  • De minimis rules for low-value shipments

The U.S. Trade Representative’s tariff-action page, the White House reciprocal-tariff fact sheet, and the Congressional Research Service timeline illustrate how frequently the rules can change. An electronics exemption, where one exists, may cover only a specific product, tariff program, classification, origin, or date. It should not be assumed to cover game consoles automatically.

The effect goes beyond Nintendo

The same pass-through choices can affect PlayStation and Xbox consoles, PCs, phones, tablets, monitors, networking equipment, controllers, headsets, chargers, storage, replacement parts, toys, appliances, clothing, and furniture. U.S. brands can also face tariff exposure when their products are manufactured abroad.

That does not mean every imported product will rise by the same percentage—or rise at all. Companies have different inventories, suppliers, margins, contracts, promotional strategies, and exposure by country. The broader console industry has faced tariff pressure, and the AP reported that Microsoft later raised Xbox prices amid continuing trade uncertainty. This is evidence of industry-wide pressure, not proof that every company will respond in the same way.

Other costs buyers should not confuse with tariffs

California has a separate fee for covered battery-embedded products. Beginning January 1, 2026, the fee is 1.5% of the retail price, capped at $15 per product, and Nintendo lists Switch 2 among applicable products. This is a state recycling fee—not a tariff. See Nintendo’s sales-tax and fee guidance for details.

Buyers should also be cautious with marketplace listings. A seller charging above MSRP is not necessarily passing through a tariff; it may simply be adding a markup. Imported gray-market units may have different warranty terms or regional limitations. Unlicensed accessories can create compatibility and reliability problems. Nintendo explains its licensed-product seal and related warnings here.

Should you buy now or wait?

Buying now may make sense if:

  • You want the console and find it at or near the official MSRP from a reputable seller.
  • You already need an accessory and can buy it at a legitimate price.
  • You prefer certainty over the possibility of a later increase.
  • You find a genuine retailer discount or useful bundle.

Waiting may make sense if:

  • You already own a working Switch.
  • You need only a small number of Switch 2 exclusives.
  • You are willing to wait for sales, bundles, or refurbished availability.
  • You are seeing marketplace prices well above MSRP.

Nintendo says refurbished hardware and physical games may be available at lower prices through its store, although availability changes. Its guidance also says there are currently no general discount codes. Compare the complete cost, warranty, compatibility, and seller reputation—not just a claimed tariff-related discount.

What is confirmed—and what is not

Claim Evidence-based answer
Did tariffs immediately raise the Switch 2 console price? No. Nintendo maintained the $449.99 price at the time of its 2025 pricing update.
Did tariffs affect Nintendo’s business? Tariff uncertainty delayed preorders, and selected products later received price adjustments.
Did Nintendo pass through a known tariff amount? No public tariff-by-product cost breakdown establishes that.
Could the console price change later? Yes, it is possible; Nintendo warned future adjustments might be necessary. It is not guaranteed.
Are later digital-game pricing differences tariff increases? Not based on Nintendo’s stated explanation, which refers to physical and digital cost differences.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Trump-era tariffs have already influenced the Switch 2 market, but the strongest evidence shows selective and indirect price pressure—not a confirmed tariff-driven increase to the $449.99 console. For buyers, the practical question is the total cost of the system and its accessories, not the headline MSRP alone.
