On April 4, 2025, President Donald Trump shared a TikTok video claiming he was crashing the stock market “on purpose” as part of a “secret game,” according to the Associated Press. That documents what the video said and what Trump shared; it does not establish that he deliberately sought to crash the market.
What did Trump share?
The video’s claims, as described by AP, were that “Trump is crashing the stock market” and “he’s doing it on purpose.” The wording belonged to the video, not to a verified account of Trump’s intentions. The report documents Trump sharing the video; it does not provide evidence proving the alleged hidden strategy.
Did Warren Buffett endorse Trump’s economic policies?
No. The video circulated amid social-media claims attributed to Buffett, but Berkshire Hathaway said those reports were false. The company’s statement, reproduced in AP’s fact check, said: “There are reports currently circulating on social media (including Twitter, Facebook and TikTok) regarding comments allegedly made by Warren E. Buffett. All such reports are false.” AP also reported that CNBC’s Becky Quick said Buffett was not authenticating quotes about the economy. The purported praise should not be treated as Buffett’s endorsement of Trump or his policies.
What was happening in the markets at the time?
AP’s April 4, 2025, report placed the post amid market losses and concern following Trump’s newly announced tariffs. That is the contemporaneous setting for the video, not a description of current market conditions.

In the same period, Trump publicly called for Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to cut interest rates. AP reported that Powell said the tariffs were “significantly larger than expected” and “highly likely” to cause more inflation, at least in the short term and possibly over a longer period. Those remarks were Powell’s assessment as reported on April 4, 2025, not a current forecast.

The reporting establishes that Trump shared it and describes the tariff-related market turmoil and rate-cut debate surrounding the post. It does not establish his reason for sharing it. The video’s “on purpose” theory is therefore not proof of a deliberate market-crashing strategy.
