Paramount settled Donald Trump’s lawsuit over a 60 Minutes interview for $16 million in July 2025. That private settlement was separate from FCC complaints involving ABC and NBC—and it does not establish why Paramount agreed to settle. In 2026, a different dispute emerged: ABC and Disney challenged the FCC’s demand for early review of licenses held by eight ABC-owned stations. The court had not immediately ruled on ABC’s request for preliminary relief after an October 6 hearing.
What did CBS settle with Trump?
Trump sued CBS in October 2024 over the editing of a 60 Minutes interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris, alleging that the editing was deceptive. CBS disputed that characterization. In July 2025, Paramount, CBS’s parent company, agreed to settle the suit for $16 million, according to CBS News’s July 2, 2025, report on the deal.
The reported agreement also included a commitment to publish transcripts of future presidential-candidate interviews, subject to redactions for legal or national-security concerns. It did not include an apology or statement of regret. The terms describe how the lawsuit was resolved; they do not, on their own, establish Paramount’s reason for settling.
Why did Trump seek FCC action against ABC and NBC?
The ABC and NBC matters involved different programming and were not part of Trump’s lawsuit against CBS. A March 31, 2025, congressional letter to FCC Chairman Brendan Carr described complaints concerning ABC’s 2024 presidential debate coverage and NBC’s broadcast of Harris on Saturday Night Live. In January 2025, the FCC reinstated complaints concerning those ABC and NBC matters, along with the CBS matter.

The NBC complaint concerned the equal-time rule, which can require broadcasters to provide legally qualified candidates with equal opportunities when a station permits one candidate to use its facilities. The complaints were administrative matters, not lawsuits between Trump and the networks. A congressional letter describing their subjects is not an FCC ruling on the merits or proof of how any complaint ultimately ended.
Trump’s public demands for action against ABC and NBC are also distinct from what the FCC formally did. The existence of a complaint, a public call for punishment, an agency decision, and a court challenge are different events; treating them as one enforcement action obscures who acted and what legal process was involved.

What happened to the ABC and NBC complaints?
The available account identifies the complaints’ subject matter and reports their reinstatement, but it does not establish a final disposition for the NBC equal-time complaint. Nor does it establish that the complaint against ABC over the debate resulted in a penalty. The ABC license-review dispute that reached court in 2026 was a later and separate proceeding.
Can the FCC revoke ABC’s or NBC’s network license?
Broadcast licenses are held by individual station licensees, not by a national network brand as a single license. So a claim that “ABC” or “NBC” could lose its license needs to identify the station or stations involved and the specific proceeding. A complaint about a program does not itself mean that a network-wide license has been revoked.

For example, the FCC’s Public Inspection File for KNBC lists that station’s license expiry as December 1, 2030. That record illustrates a station-specific license; it does not establish the license status or expiry dates of every ABC- or NBC-affiliated station.

In August 2026, ABC, Disney, and eight ABC-owned stations sued over the FCC’s demand for an early review of those stations’ broadcast licenses. The Associated Press reported that the FCC cited Disney’s diversity and inclusion practices and that the action followed conflict involving ABC host Jimmy Kimmel. ABC alleged that the review was retaliatory and threatened editorial independence; those are the company’s claims, not findings by a court.

At an October 6, 2026, federal-court hearing on ABC’s request to block the early review, the government argued that the dispute belonged in a different venue and challenged ABC’s First Amendment and irreparable-harm arguments. Judge Loren AliKhan did not immediately rule on the request. The hearing therefore did not, by itself, decide whether the review would proceed or whether ABC’s claims were valid.
A May 7, 2026, letter from members of Congress to Carr characterized the Disney early-renewal order as politically motivated and described a broader pattern of threats. Those are the signatories’ assertions, not neutral findings or a court ruling.
