In a September 10, 2025 report, Scroll.in said U.S. President Donald Trump described U.S.–India trade negotiations as ongoing and said he expected to speak with Prime Minister Narendra Modi about trade in the coming weeks. Modi welcomed continued discussions the next day. The report does not establish whether the anticipated conversation took place or what the negotiations’ status is now.
What Trump said about the trade talks
Scroll.in reported that Trump said the United States and India were continuing negotiations to address trade barriers. He said he was looking forward to speaking with Modi about trade in the coming weeks and expressed confidence in the outcome: “I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our great countries!”
Those remarks described an expectation, not a confirmed meeting or an agreement. The report did not say that the two leaders later spoke or that negotiators resolved the issues under discussion. Read Scroll.in’s September 10, 2025 report.
How Modi responded
Scroll.in reported that Modi responded the following day, calling the United States and India close friends and natural partners. He said their teams were working to conclude the discussions at the earliest and that he looked forward to speaking with Trump. The report quotes Modi describing the talks as a chance to “pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential” of the partnership.

Why the negotiations were under strain
The report placed the remarks against tensions over U.S. tariffs on Indian goods and additional levies linked to India’s purchase of Russian oil. It said negotiators had completed a fifth round in Washington in July 2025. A further round scheduled for August 25 had been cancelled, and no replacement date had been announced as of the September 10 report.
These details describe the situation reported at that time. They should not be read as current tariff rates or confirmation of the present state of negotiations.
