On October 1, 2025, President Donald Trump said soybeans would be a major topic when he met Chinese President Xi Jinping “in four weeks.” The anticipated meeting was tied to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in South Korea; Trump and Xi later met there on October 30, 2025. The soybean market concerns described at the time were historical, not a statement of current buying conditions.

When did Trump and Xi meet?

Trump’s October 1, 2025 statement pointed to a meeting about four weeks later, alongside the APEC forum in South Korea. Axios later reported that the leaders met in South Korea on October 30, 2025. Reuters reported the October 1 statement; Axios reported the October 30 meeting.

Did Trump say he would discuss soybeans with Xi?

Yes. In a Truth Social post quoted by Anadolu Ajansı, Trump wrote: “I’ll be meeting with President Xi, of China, in four weeks, and Soybeans will be a major topic of discussion,” Anadolu Ajansı reported the statement. Reuters also quoted Trump saying U.S. soybean farmers were being hurt because China was not buying, and that China was doing so “for ’negotiating’ reasons only.” That was Trump’s explanation of China’s motives, not an independently established finding. Reuters’ account attributes the claim to his post.

Why were U.S. soybean farmers concerned in October 2025?

Contemporaneous reports said Chinese importers had not bought soybeans from the U.S. autumn 2025 harvest, while China was sourcing from South America. Reuters described autumn as the prime U.S. soybean marketing season and said the shift was pressuring U.S. soybean prices. These reports describe conditions in October 2025, not today’s market. Reuters’ October 1 report also quoted Senator John Hoeven saying he had not been told sales were imminent.

Why China’s purchases matter

China had been the biggest foreign buyer of American soybeans for many years, according to the Associated Press. AP reported that Chinese soybean imports are largely processed for oil and animal feed. For the 2022–2023 marketing year, the American Soybean Association put U.S. soybean production value at $60.7 billion and production at nearly 4.3 billion bushels; AP said just over half of that crop was exported. Those figures refer to that marketing year, not the 2025 crop. AP’s report provides the market context and figures.

South American supply and the risk of delay

In the 2025 report, Caleb Ragland, president of the American Soybean Association, said China had ordered soybeans from Brazil and Argentina for delivery through December. He warned that a delayed deal could leave China bypassing the U.S. crop, and described farmers as being used as “a bargaining chip” in the trade dispute. Those are Ragland’s concerns as quoted by AP, not proof of what China ultimately purchased. AP quoted Ragland’s comments.

What did the trade dispute and proposed farmer aid involve?

Trump said tariff revenue would be used to help farmers. AP reported at the time that details of the contemplated aid package were unknown; the reporting did not establish an amount, eligibility rules, or implementation status. AP reported the farmer-aid announcement, and Anadolu Ajansı also covered Trump’s promise.

The dispute came against the backdrop of the first Trump administration’s 2020 trade deal, which included promised Chinese purchases of U.S. agricultural products. Reuters reported that China did not meet its agreed purchase targets. Chinese Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu, in turn, called for implementation of understandings reached by the leaders. These are the parties’ respective positions as reported at the time. Reuters covered the trade-deal context and the embassy response.

What happened to the soybean issue after the meeting?

After the October 30, 2025 meeting, Trump said Beijing had pledged to buy U.S. soybeans, along with other crops and goods. Axios cautioned that it was unclear whether lasting agreements were in place on soybean exports and other contentious issues. A reported pledge is not evidence that the purchases were completed. Axios reported the pledge and the uncertainty around it.
