What Anduril plans to build at Sparrows Point
The announcement concerns defense manufacturing: Anduril plans to build components for nuclear-powered submarines at the former Bethlehem Steel site. It is not an announcement that the Navy will operate a submarine shipyard there, and the available reporting describes an investment and plan—not a completed facility or production already underway. Trump described Baltimore-area workers and the Sparrows Point shipyard as part of the country’s industrial strength. His remarks promoted the project, but do not establish that construction or manufacturing has begun.
Why Gov. Wes Moore was absent—and what each side says
Moore, a Democratic governor of a blue state, did not attend the Trump event. The accounts of why differ, and reporting does not resolve the dispute:

- Moore’s office: Spokesperson Ammar Moussa said the governor was blocked from speaking. Moussa also said Moore would work with anyone to deliver for Marylanders while standing up for them.
- The White House: Spokesperson Anna Kelly said Moore had been invited as a guest and that the White House worked with his staff and security team to facilitate his attendance. Kelly characterized his absence as a boycott.
Those are competing descriptions from the governor’s office and the White House, not independently established explanations. The political disagreement over the event is separate from Moore’s position on the investment: he praised the project in a statement.
How many jobs and how much economic activity are projected?
The announced figures are estimates and political statements about expected impact, not verified results. The claims also measure different things:

These claims should not be treated as interchangeable: the White House figure includes direct and indirect jobs and an annual output estimate, while Maryland officials described the investment and job creation in broader comparative terms. The reporting does not establish the eventual job total.

The announcement links a major private investment to submarine-component manufacturing at a former steel site near Baltimore. It does not establish that the facility is built, that components are being produced, or that any projected jobs or economic output have materialized. The Associated Press also reported that the United States then had 26 Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarines, with two more expected to join the fleet in the spring, citing an official on a call.
