President Donald Trump met Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan at the White House on Aug. 11, 2025, four days after publicly demanding that Tan resign. Afterward, Trump praised Tan’s career and said they would develop suggestions for the following week. The meeting eased the immediate confrontation, but the public accounts described discussion and planned follow-up—not a finalized agreement.
Why did Trump call for Intel’s CEO to resign?
On Aug. 7, Trump posted that Tan was “highly CONFLICTED” and “must resign, immediately,” according to ABC News. The demand followed reporting about Tan’s investments in Chinese companies. Reuters reported that Tan had invested at least $200 million in hundreds of Chinese firms, some of which it said were linked to the Chinese military (Reuters).
That reported background helps explain the controversy, but it is not proof that Tan broke the law. The sources documenting the demand and meeting do not establish that his investments were illegal.
What happened at the White House meeting?
Tan met Trump on Aug. 11, accompanied by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Trump later described the meeting as “a very interesting one” and wrote that Tan’s “success and rise is an amazing story.” He said Tan and Cabinet members would develop suggestions during the following week (Reuters; Intel).

Intel characterized the discussion as “candid and constructive,” saying it concerned the company’s commitment to strengthening U.S. technology and manufacturing leadership. That statement described the subject and tone of the conversation; it did not announce a specific deal.
Did Trump reverse his resignation demand?
In practical terms, Trump backed away from the immediate demand after meeting Tan. The change was apparent in his conciliatory public comments and was reported by the Associated Press on Aug. 12 (AP). The public record cited in these accounts shows a shift from demanding resignation to praising Tan, but it does not document a formal rescission or every part of their private discussion.

Was an agreement reached, and what did markets do?
The Aug. 11 accounts describe a meeting and plans to develop suggestions, not a finalized agreement. They do not establish that the meeting itself produced a government investment, subsidy, or manufacturing commitment. Any later corporate or government action should be treated as a separate development with its own date and evidence.
Reuters reported that Intel shares rose 3% in extended trading after the meeting. That was the immediate market reaction reported at the time, not evidence of a lasting change in the company’s performance or prospects (Reuters).
