Do not decide based on the model name alone. NHTSA’s battery-pack recall filing 25V537 covers certain 2025 Rivian R1T and R1S vehicles; it does not list the R2. To determine whether a particular R2 can be driven, check its VIN and any Rivian notice. Follow any “do not drive” instruction, and contact Rivian Service before driving if the guidance is missing or unclear.
What the battery-pack recall covers
NHTSA filing 25V537 identifies certain model-year 2025 R1T and R1S vehicles with a potentially improper ground connection inside the High Voltage Distribution Box (HVDB). The filing does not list R2, so this campaign should not be described as an R2 battery recall.
The reported defect could cause loss of motive power without prior warning, increasing crash risk. For vehicles included in the campaign, Rivian’s remedy is to inspect and repair the HVDB ground-strap joint or replace the high-voltage battery pack. The filing does not establish an R2 repair procedure or authorize owner repairs.
The filing says a Rivian technician identified the ground-connection issue while analyzing a warranty-replaced battery pack on March 14, 2025, and Rivian decided on a voluntary safety recall on August 14, 2025. It reported no related accidents or injuries known to Rivian at that time; that is a statement about the filing, not a guarantee about later outcomes. The campaign lists 23 vehicles potentially involved and estimates that 25% had the defect—figures for this R1 campaign, not an R2 risk rate.

How to check whether your R2 has a recall or restriction
- Find the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. It is commonly visible at the lower left of the windshield and on vehicle documents.
- Enter the VIN in NHTSA’s recall lookup to check for unrepaired safety recalls.
- Check Rivian messages and your owner account for a vehicle-specific notice. NHTSA cautions that a newly announced recall may not yet appear for every VIN; its lookup also does not show non-safety campaigns or recalls that have already been repaired.
- Read the interim driving instructions in any notice. If it says not to drive, do not drive. If the lookup, notice, or vehicle warning leaves the instruction uncertain, contact Rivian Service before using the vehicle.
- Arrange any required repair through Rivian’s recall process. Do not treat the R1 HVDB remedy as instructions for an R2.
A clear lookup is useful, but it is not conclusive if you have a new notice or an unresolved warning: NHTSA notes that recently announced recalls may not appear for every VIN yet.

NHTSA campaign 26V009, announced in January 2026, concerns potentially loose second-row seat-belt retractor bolts on certain 2022–2025 R1T and 2022–2026 R1S vehicles. Its remedy is inspection and tightening as needed. It is separate from the HVDB battery-pack campaign and does not list R2. See the NHTSA notice.
