Trump Campaign Said It Raised $34.8 Million After Guilty Verdict

Donald Trump’s campaign announced on May 31, 2024, that it had raised $34.8 million from small-dollar donors after a New York jury found Trump guilty on 34 felony counts the day before. The amount was the campaign’s claim, not an independently audited tally of transactions from that initial post-verdict period.

What the campaign said it raised

On May 31, Trump campaign senior advisers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles said donations had begun arriving minutes after the verdict. In a statement quoted by The Hill, they said the campaign’s online fundraising system was overwhelmed by traffic and that Trump had raised $34.8 million from small-dollar donors. They described the amount as nearly double the campaign’s previous biggest WinRed day.

The campaign attributed the surge to the verdict. That is the campaign’s explanation for the donations, not independent evidence that the verdict caused every contribution. The amount was reported contemporaneously by WIRED and other outlets.

Why reports also cited more than $50 million

The $34.8 million announcement and a separate campaign claim of more than $50 million online in the 24 hours after the verdict refer to different reported figures. The initial announcement described small-dollar fundraising following the verdict; the more-than-$50-million figure was a subsequent, broader 24-hour claim reported by CBS News. They should not be added together: the reporting does not establish that the amounts cover non-overlapping donations.

How the figures fit into May fundraising

On June 3, the Trump campaign and Republican National Committee reported $141 million in fundraising for May. The Associated Press reported that the campaign said 37.6% of that May total came from online contributions in the 24 hours after the verdict. The campaign also reported more than two million donations during May, averaging $70.27, and said about one-quarter of donors were new to the campaign. These are campaign-attributed figures, not independent audits.

Figure What it describes Attribution and status
$34.8 million Small-dollar fundraising announced after the verdict Trump campaign, May 31; no transaction-level independent reconciliation of this initial amount is provided in contemporaneous reporting.
More than $50 million Online fundraising during the 24 hours after the verdict Trump campaign, in a subsequent claim reported May 31; a broader time-window figure.
$141 million Total fundraising reported for May Trump campaign and RNC, reported June 3; campaign-reported total.
37.6% Share of May fundraising the campaign said came online in the 24 hours after the verdict Campaign-reported share relayed by the Associated Press on June 3.

The Associated Press noted that the campaign was not required to publicly disclose its fundraising to the Federal Election Commission until later in June, and that official figures had not yet been released when the May total was announced. Its contemporaneous coverage does not provide an official transaction-by-transaction reconciliation isolating the initial $34.8 million window.

What happened in court

On May 30, 2024, a New York jury found Trump guilty on all 34 felony counts in his hush-money criminal trial. The Associated Press reported that prosecutors alleged he falsified business records to conceal reimbursements to his then-lawyer Michael Cohen, who had paid Stormy Daniels $130,000 in the final weeks of the 2016 campaign. This case context explains the event referenced in the fundraising announcement; it does not independently verify the campaign’s fundraising claims.
