Protect a cross-chain wallet by checking the site, networks, asset, contract, and transaction before signing; granting only the token allowance you need; and reviewing approvals separately on every network you use. Disconnecting a dapp does not revoke an allowance already granted. A hardware wallet can help protect private keys, but it cannot make a malicious approval or bridge transaction safe.
Understand what you are approving
A wallet connection is not the same as a token approval
A connection lets a site interact with your wallet in certain ways; a token approval gives a contract permission to access and move a particular token on your behalf. MetaMask warns that approval requests can be for an effectively unlimited amount. Check the token, spender, and requested amount instead of accepting a request just because it appears during a familiar workflow.
When a wallet and application offer a custom spending cap, set it to the amount you expect to use rather than granting unlimited access by default. A smaller allowance limits the permission granted, though it does not establish that the site or transaction is safe.
Disconnecting does not remove an allowance
Disconnecting a site can end some wallet connection or visibility permissions. It does not undo an on-chain token allowance. To remove an allowance, review it with an approval tool for the relevant network and submit a separate revocation transaction.

Check a bridge transaction before signing
There is no universal bridge-specific checklist that establishes a bridge as safe. Use these checks to reduce avoidable mistakes, and do not treat a familiar interface or a wallet warning as a guarantee.
- Open the official site from a trusted bookmark. Avoid links in unsolicited messages, search ads, and urgent prompts. Verify the domain before connecting your wallet.
- Check both networks. Confirm the selected source and destination networks in the application and in the wallet wherever they are shown.
- Check the asset and destination. Read the asset and destination details presented for the transfer. Stop if they differ from what you intended or are unclear.
- Inspect the approval request. Confirm which token and contract are involved and whether the amount is limited to what you need. Decline unexpected or unexplained approvals.
- Read the transaction or signature request. Do not sign an unexplained request, or one presented under pressure. If the wallet does not show information you can meaningfully assess, do not treat that lack of detail as reassurance.
The Ethereum Foundation’s Clear Signing announcement describes users approving transactions they cannot meaningfully understand as a recurring final step in major exploits. Clearer transaction information can help people make a more informed decision, but readable details and wallet alerts are aids, not proof that a transaction is harmless.

Review and revoke token approvals
Check every network you use
Approval checkers typically show contracts for the selected network, not every chain associated with your wallet. Use a trusted wallet portfolio tool, a network-specific block explorer approval checker, or a multi-network approval tool, and verify the tool’s domain independently before connecting. Check that it identifies the spender and allowance clearly and lets you verify the resulting on-chain state.
Repeat the review for each network where you have used the wallet. A permission on one network is not a complete inventory of permissions on another.

Submit and verify the revocation
- Select the network on which the allowance exists.
- Find the spender and token allowance you want to remove, then choose the revocation action in the trusted tool.
- Review the resulting wallet transaction and submit it only if the network and action are as expected.
- Pay the network gas required for the on-chain transaction, then check the allowance again to confirm it no longer appears.
Revoking an allowance may mean you need to approve that contract again if you use it later. That is separate from disconnecting the dapp, which does not remove an existing allowance.
Protect keys separately from approvals
Never share your recovery phrase or private keys. Ethereum.org describes hardware wallets as keeping private keys local and offline. That can reduce exposure of the keys, but a hardware wallet does not validate a bridge’s trustworthiness or prevent you from signing a harmful approval or transaction. Pay attention to what the device displays and what the wallet asks you to authorize.

What to do after signing something suspicious
If you suspect a wallet is compromised, act promptly: transactions cannot be reversed. Ethereum.org advises moving remaining assets to a new secure wallet, revoking approvals, changing linked exchange passwords, and enabling two-factor authentication.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
- Protect assets still at risk. If you can do so safely, move remaining assets to a new wallet whose recovery phrase has not been exposed. Do not reuse a possibly compromised recovery phrase.
- Revoke the harmful allowance where possible. Use a trusted tool on the network where the allowance exists, and verify the result. If the transaction itself or the recovery phrase may be compromised, prioritize securing remaining assets.
- Secure linked accounts. Change passwords for linked exchange accounts and enable two-factor authentication.
- Keep evidence. Save transaction hashes, wallet and contract addresses, screenshots, and relevant messages for reporting.
- Reject paid recovery offers that ask for keys. Never give anyone your recovery phrase or private keys to recover funds. Ethereum.org warns that paid recovery offers are likely another scam.
