The Associated Press reported that donations could be made in Bitcoin, Ether, USD Coin, Shiba Inu Coin and Dogecoin through crypto assets accepted by Coinbase. That is a time-specific account of the 2024 announcement—not confirmation that the page or processing arrangement is available today.
What Trump and his campaign announced
On May 8, 2024, Trump said crypto donations should be possible. He was speaking to buyers of his non-fungible tokens, according to The Block. He said, “If you can’t, I’ll make sure you can,” and, “Can we donate to the Trump campaign using crypto? I believe the answer is yes.”
The campaign’s fundraising page was reported as launched on May 21. The Associated Press report named Bitcoin, Ether, USD Coin, Shiba Inu Coin and Dogecoin among the accepted assets. It described the page as intended for federally permissible donors and reported that the crypto assets were accepted through Coinbase.
Could you donate Bitcoin to Trump’s campaign?
The 2024 announcement said eligible donors could use Bitcoin and the other named cryptocurrencies through the campaign page. It does not establish whether that page remains available in 2026, or whether the campaign still has the same processing arrangement. The available reporting also does not establish how much the campaign received in crypto.

Are cryptocurrency campaign donations legal?
Crypto does not bypass federal campaign-finance restrictions. The Federal Election Commission says committees can receive bitcoin contributions, treating bitcoin as “money or anything of value” under the Federal Election Campaign Act. Its guidance applies specifically to bitcoin; the FEC opinion does not amount to a ruling on every cryptocurrency or on Trump’s campaign specifically.
Donors and committees must still comply with source and eligibility rules. FEC guidance identifies prohibited sources and methods that include contributions from foreign nationals, corporate or labor-organization treasury funds, federal government contractors, and contributions made in another person’s name. The campaign’s description of its page as serving federally permissible donors did not waive those restrictions.

How the FEC treats bitcoin contributions
The FEC’s bitcoin contribution guidance says committees should value bitcoin at its market value when received. It describes reporting the receipt initially as an in-kind contribution and using offsetting entries while the bitcoin remains unliquidated, so the committee’s reported cash on hand is not inflated.
Processor fees are reported separately as operating expenditures; they are not subtracted from the contribution’s reported value. The FEC’s 2014 advisory opinion addressed a proposal by Make Your Laws PAC. It concluded that bitcoin could be accepted under the Act and held in a wallet until liquidation, subject to the rules and procedures it described. That opinion concerned bitcoin and a particular committee proposal, not Trump’s campaign or every digital asset.

What remained unclear at the time
When the page launch was reported, the AP said it was unclear whether the campaign would hold the crypto or sell it immediately, and what fees liquidation might involve. Those were unresolved operational details in the contemporaneous report, not established outcomes.
The FEC’s rules explain how bitcoin contributions are valued and reported, but they do not answer what the Trump campaign ultimately did with crypto received through its 2024 page. The reporting available here also does not verify current page availability or a current Coinbase relationship.
