EPA announced the action on March 25, with the initial waiver period set for May 1–20; later, successive actions changed the timeline and the fuel rules in effect. The waiver was temporary, not a permanent nationwide change to E15 rules, and it did not make E15 suitable for every vehicle. The summer period covered by those actions had passed by October 8, 2026.
What the 2026 waiver allowed
On March 25, 2026, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in consultation with the Department of Energy, announced a temporary emergency waiver under the Clean Air Act. EPA said the initial action would allow nationwide sales of E15 starting May 1 and remove federal impediments to selling E10 across the country. EPA described the initial May 1–20 window as the maximum period allowed under the Act for that waiver.
E15 is gasoline blended with 15% ethanol. EPA said it was offered at over 3,000 gas stations nationwide in its March 25 release; the release did not give a separate date or methodology for that station count. That figure did not mean every station carried E15 or that it was available at a particular location.
How the waiver timeline changed
The March announcement was the start of a series of temporary actions, not the full timeline for summer fuel rules. EPA’s waiver archive records the following later steps:

Dates and descriptions in the table reflect EPA’s waiver archive. As of October 8, the summer E15 period had passed. The archive’s later entries do not establish a continuing nationwide permission to buy E15 under the summer waiver, and they do not show what any individual station currently sells.
Which vehicles can use E15
A temporary permission to sell a fuel does not override EPA’s vehicle-use restrictions. EPA says E15 may be used in flex-fuel vehicles and model-year 2001-and-newer cars, light-duty trucks, and medium-duty passenger vehicles such as SUVs. Check the pump label and your vehicle’s guidance before filling up.

EPA says not to use E15 in:
- Model-year 2000 and older cars, light-duty trucks, and medium-duty passenger vehicles.
- Motorcycles and heavy-duty vehicles, including buses and delivery trucks.
- Boats, snowmobiles, lawnmowers, chainsaws, and other small engines covered by EPA’s restrictions.
EPA also describes safeguards for sellers: E15 retailers need approved misfueling mitigation plans, and EPA lists fuel-registration and compliance-survey requirements. The 2026 waiver announcement did not say these consumer restrictions were removed.
Why the administration said it issued the waiver
EPA said the action was intended to address fuel-supply circumstances, add flexibility to the fuel marketplace, and help with pump prices. Administrator Lee Zeldin said the action would provide relief by increasing supply and consumer choice; Agriculture Secretary Brooke L. Rollins said summer E15 sales would give drivers more options and create a larger domestic market for farmers. Those were stated expectations, not evidence that fuel prices fell or that supply increased by a measured amount. The available figures do not establish realized savings or quantify the waiver’s effects on supply or emissions.

EPA’s general explanation of its authority points to Clean Air Act provisions for waivers in specified circumstances. EPA traces the E10 waiver to 1978 and says almost all gasoline today is blended as E10. That history provides context for temporary fuel waivers; it does not make the 2026 E15 action permanent.

The practical effect depended on where fuel was sold, whether a station offered E15, and whether the vehicle was eligible to use it. EPA framed the action as an effort to expand choices and help with pump prices, but the agency’s announcement does not establish that drivers paid less. A nationwide waiver did not guarantee local availability, and a lower ethanol blend or a higher one should not be chosen without checking the vehicle’s fuel guidance.
