Start with the fee waiver you already qualify for. Truist One Checking has a $12 monthly fee that can be waived through several routes; the Truist Confidence Account costs $5 per month and has its own deposit- and transaction-based waivers. One Checking is the more flexible fit if you want checks or may qualify for its conditional Balance Buffer. Confidence is designed to prevent most overdrafts and does not include paper checks. Neither account earns interest. The right choice depends on your deposits, qualifying transactions, existing Truist relationship and comfort with payments being declined.

Truist One Checking vs. Confidence Account

These accounts differ most in their monthly fees, waiver rules and handling of payments that exceed your balance. The figures below are published account terms; check the linked disclosures for current details before applying.

For full account terms, see Truist’s One Checking disclosure and Confidence disclosure.

What you will pay each month

Truist lists a $12 fee for One Checking and a $5 fee for Confidence, with a $0 fee when you meet an applicable waiver condition. The bank’s Personal Deposit Accounts Fee Schedule, effective April 9, 2026, also says neither account has a monthly paper-statement fee. Neither is an interest-bearing account.

One Checking fee waivers

Details and qualifying products are in the account disclosure.

Do not assume every incoming payment counts as a direct deposit. Truist’s definition excludes some transfers and deposits, including deposits made at a branch, ATM or by mobile deposit. Check the disclosure’s definition against the way you receive money before relying on this waiver.

Confidence Account fee waivers

Confidence’s monthly fee can be waived with $500 or more in total deposits during the statement cycle, or at least 10 qualifying transactions. Truist defines qualifying transactions to include certain posted ATM withdrawals, payments and transfers, debit-card transactions, and Zelle payments; bank fees do not count. Student status and the stated age criteria are additional waiver routes. The Confidence disclosure sets out the complete definitions.

For a student waiver, the primary owner must be identified as a student and provide an anticipated graduation date. The waiver may expire afterward unless another condition applies. The under-25 waiver expires on the primary owner’s 25th birthday.

Overdrafts, declined payments and the Balance Buffer

One Checking

Truist says One Checking has no overdraft-related fees and offers a Balance Buffer of up to $100 to qualifying clients. The buffer is conditional, not an automatic $100 cushion for every new account: eligibility includes account age, positive funding and a qualifying recent direct deposit, with additional initial and ongoing criteria in the current disclosure. Transactions above the available amount may still be declined or returned. Any linked overdraft protection may have separate terms under its credit agreement.

Confidence

Confidence is designed to prevent most overdrafts. Truist says that, in most cases, transactions that exceed the balance will be declined. That is not a guarantee that an account can never show a negative balance or that every transaction will be handled identically; see the Confidence account page and disclosure for the bank’s terms.

Level Eligible portfolio balance
Level 1 $0–$9,999.99
Level 2 $10,000–$24,999.99
Level 3 $25,000–$49,999.99
Level 4 $50,000–$99,999.99
Level Premier $100,000 or more

Truist says level calculations use eligible portfolio balances and may change according to the highest portfolio value of the previous three months. The fee schedule describes relationship pricing for additional eligible One Checking and One Savings accounts. Treat this as a benefit for customers who already have qualifying Truist balances or accounts—not as cash back or interest. See the fee schedule for details.

Which account fits your banking habits?

Consider One Checking if…

  • You can meet one of its waiver conditions without holding an otherwise unnecessary balance or changing how you bank.
  • You want access to checks; confirm availability and any terms in the current account materials.
  • You may qualify for the Balance Buffer and value its limited, conditional protection.
  • You already have eligible Truist balances or accounts that make its relationship pricing useful.

Consider Confidence if…

  • You can reliably meet the $500-deposit or 10-qualifying-transaction waiver, or another waiver condition.
  • You do not need paper checks.
  • You prefer an account designed to decline or return most transactions that exceed the available balance, rather than treating overdraft approval as the priority.

Before opening either account, compare the fee waiver you can actually sustain with the account’s payment and check features. Truist’s checking overview and online account-opening page provide the bank’s current product and application information.

Is there a Truist checking bonus?

Truist’s checking page lists a $500 offer for eligible new One Checking or Marquee Checking clients, with an offer window of July 14, 2026 through February 2, 2027 and 120 days to complete qualifying activities. Enrollment and other requirements apply; opening an account alone does not earn the bonus. Promotions are time-sensitive, so review the live offer terms before applying and confirm that you meet every condition.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
