Identify what is actually failing

Important: If MT5 is installed and opens, the download problem is over. Broker servers, passwords, invalid-account messages, missing instruments, and absent quotes are connection or account issues.

Use the correct MetaTrader 5 distribution
The official download options include Windows, macOS, Linux, WebTerminal, iOS, and Android. Choose the route that matches your device from the MetaTrader download page or the general MetaTrader access page.

- Windows: typically downloads
mt5setup.exe. - macOS: uses MetaTrader’s Wine-based installation workflow.
- Linux: uses Wine and MetaTrader’s installation script rather than a conventional native package.
- WebTerminal: runs in a browser and requires no local installation.
- Mobile: install through the official Apple App Store or Google Play listing.
A generic MetaTrader installer may not contain your broker’s server configuration. A broker-specific installer can simplify server selection, but download it only from the broker’s genuine domain. The software download may be free; trading can still involve spreads, commissions, exchange fees, or account requirements.
Windows: fix failed downloads and installations
MetaTrader’s current installation documentation lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported systems. The Windows file is a web installer: downloading mt5setup.exe does not download every platform component. The installer must retrieve the remaining files during setup. See the official Windows installation guide.
Normal installation
- Download
mt5setup.exefrom the official MetaTrader page. - Save it to a local folder such as Downloads or the desktop—not a network, removable, or cloud-synchronized drive.
- Double-click the file and approve the Windows permission prompt if the source is trusted.
- Click Next and keep the internet connection active while the remaining components download.
- Click Finish, open MT5, and test the broker connection.
If the installer does nothing or stops
- Confirm the file has a plausible
.exeextension and was fully downloaded. - Delete it and download a fresh copy if the download was interrupted.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Disconnect from a VPN or restrictive proxy temporarily.
- Try a different network, such as a phone hotspot, to distinguish network blocking from an installer fault.
- Check free disk space and whether antivirus or endpoint security quarantined the file.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. Verify the source, scan the file, and inspect the security product’s specific block or quarantine message first.
“Unblock” a trusted downloaded file
Windows can mark internet-downloaded files as blocked. For a file obtained from a verified MetaTrader or broker website:
- Open File Explorer and right-click the installer.
- Select Properties.
- On the General tab, look for a security notice.
- Select Unblock, then choose Apply and OK.
- Run the installer again.
Microsoft explains this downloaded-file behavior in its Attachment Manager documentation. Use Unblock only when you have verified the file’s source.

SmartScreen and Smart App Control
Microsoft Defender SmartScreen can warn about an unfamiliar or low-reputation application. Verify that the file came from the official source and that the publisher information is consistent before proceeding. Do not switch off SmartScreen globally simply because installation failed.
Windows 11 Smart App Control may block an unsigned or untrusted application. Microsoft does not provide a per-application bypass; disabling the feature may be required in some cases, so treat that as a last resort. On a work-managed computer, contact the administrator instead.

For scripted deployments, MetaTrader documents commands such as:
C:mt5setup.exe /auto
C:mt5setup.exe /auto /path:"C:Program FilesMyFolder"
C:mt5setup.exe /betaThese are administrator-oriented options, not necessary for ordinary troubleshooting. If you need multiple accounts open simultaneously, install separate instances in different directories. Back up profiles, templates, indicators, Expert Advisors, and other custom files before uninstalling or deleting data.
macOS: Wine, Gatekeeper, and damaged installers
MetaTrader’s current macOS installation guide lists macOS Catalina 10.15.7 as the minimum documented version and says the platform supports both Intel and Apple processors. The Mac workflow uses Wine rather than the same native Windows installation architecture. An older MetaTrader announcement mentions Mojave, but the newer installation guide should take priority.

Follow the official macOS guide.
Normal installation
- Download the official macOS installer.
- Open the downloaded package or application.
- Follow the installation wizard.
- Approve installation of required Wine components, including Mono and Gecko, when prompted.
- Launch MT5 and then configure your broker account.
If macOS blocks the app
If the warning concerns an unidentified developer and the download is verified:
- Attempt to open the app once.
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to the Security section.
- Choose Open Anyway and confirm.
Apple’s guidance for this process is available for apps from unidentified developers. Do not use Open Anyway to bypass a warning that the app is damaged, contains malware, or may harm your computer. Instead:
- Delete the installer.
- Empty the Trash if necessary.
- Download a fresh copy from MetaTrader.
- Try another browser or network if the package repeatedly appears damaged.
- Check whether security software quarantined or altered the file.
Apple distinguishes an unidentified-developer warning from a damaged or malicious-file warning. The latter should not be casually overridden; see Apple’s Gatekeeper guidance.
Existing Wine installations and backups
If MT5 was previously installed, check the Wine version in the platform log. MetaTrader’s current guide discusses Wine 8.0.1 and recommends removing an older platform and Wine prefix when the installed Wine version is below that level. Back up your custom data first.
Documented locations can include:
~/Library/Application Support/Metatrader 5
~/Library/Application Support/net.metaquotes.wine.metatrader5The documented default data location is:
~/Library/Application Support/net.metaquotes.wine.metatrader5/drive_c/Program Files/MetaTrader 5Paths can vary by version, installation method, and broker build. Preserve templates, profiles, indicators, Expert Advisors, and other custom files before a clean reinstall.

Linux: use the official Wine-based path
MetaTrader 5 does not use the same native installation workflow on Linux as on Windows. MetaTrader provides a Wine-based script designed to identify the system and supports Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, and Fedora distributions. Start with the official Linux installation instructions rather than combining random Wine commands from forums.
- Run the supplied MetaTrader installation script.
- Allow it to identify the distribution and install the appropriate Wine package.
- Allow required components to install.
- Restart if requested, then launch MT5.
Common failures include an unsupported distribution or release, missing dependencies, incorrect 32-bit or 64-bit configuration, an old Wine prefix, home-directory permissions, display-server incompatibility, restricted package repositories, and conflicts with manually installed Wine. Because the correct commands vary by distribution and release, avoid applying an unverified command sequence copied from a forum.

Install the official MetaTrader 5 app through the relevant app store and verify the publisher. Do not sideload APK files or install mobile packages from unverified websites. Common causes of failure include:
- Device or operating-system incompatibility.
- Country or regional store restrictions.
- Insufficient storage.
- Parental controls or device-management restrictions.
- A temporary app-store or network failure.
- Choosing the wrong app listing.
Installing the app does not create a trading account or guarantee that your broker’s server will appear. Broker availability and account activation remain separate issues.

Once the application launches, stop treating the problem as a download failure. You generally need the account’s login number, the trading password rather than the investor/read-only password, the exact broker server, and the correct demo or live account type.

If the broker does not appear
- Search using the broker’s legal or registered name.
- Search using the exact server name in the broker’s welcome email or client portal.
- Install the broker’s official MT5 build if it supplies one.
- Confirm that the account is MT5, not MT4.
- Confirm whether it is a demo or live account.
- Ask the broker whether server names changed or accounts were migrated.
A missing broker in the server list does not prove that MT5 downloaded incorrectly. MetaQuotes supplies the terminal; the broker controls server names, credentials, account status, instruments, and trading permissions.
If login is rejected
Check the numeric login if one was supplied, use the trading password, select the correct server, and confirm that the account is activated and not restricted. Also check the device clock, VPN, firewall, DNS, and corporate-network restrictions. Contact the broker for credentials, server details, and account status.
If there are no quotes or instruments
Check the connection indicator, confirm that the account is authorized, and open the symbols or market-watch list to enable the instruments. The market may be closed, the account may lack permission for an instrument, or the broker may not offer it. None of these conditions is fixed by reinstalling MT5.

When to reinstall—and when not to
Reinstall only after confirming that the installer is current and official, recording broker servers and account details, and backing up custom files. Reinstallation can repair corrupted platform files or an outdated Wine prefix, but it will not fix a wrong password, incorrect server, disabled account, or broker-side permissions.
Before removing MT5, back up:
- Profiles and templates.
- Indicators and Expert Advisors.
- Scripts and custom files.
- Broker server details and account records.
No-install alternatives
MetaTrader WebTerminal is the fastest fallback for a locked-down computer or a failed local installation. It is useful for temporary access and account checks, but it does not necessarily replace desktop features such as extensive local profiles, Expert Advisors, or every advanced analysis workflow.
Other options include the official mobile app, another supported Windows computer, a Windows virtual machine, or a hosted desktop/VPS when advanced desktop functionality is essential. These alternatives can add complexity or cost.
