Trey Parker and Matt Stone bought Casa Bonita to save a place they loved, expecting a manageable renovation. Instead, hidden damage and the demands of rebuilding an aging attraction pushed reported renovation costs from initial budgets of roughly $6 million to more than $40 million—and, in a 2026 account of the owners’ remarks, about $50 million. Stone said they were nearly breaking even and might recover their investment around 2040; that was an interview estimate, not audited financial disclosure.
Why Parker and Stone bought Casa Bonita
Casa Bonita opened in Lakewood, Colorado, in 1974. Its pink facade, themed rooms, caves, cliff divers and other attractions made it an immersive outing as much as a restaurant. When the longtime destination faced closure, Parker and Stone agreed to buy it in August 2021, subject to bankruptcy proceedings. Axios later reported the purchase price as $3.1 million. The motivation was personal, especially for Parker, who has said Casa Bonita was part of his childhood and that he wanted his daughter and future generations to experience it. In NPR’s Fresh Air, he reflected: “Any savvy business person would say, get out now, you know (laughter)? But I’m not savvy. And it was just like, that’s not the point. It’s trying to save something.” NPR’s interview and documentary excerpt
How much did the renovation cost?
There is no single audited renovation total established in the public accounts cited here. The published figures reflect different stages, estimates and descriptions of the project, so they should not be treated as one consistent ledger.

The variation matters: an early budget, a later estimate and a reported final tab are not interchangeable. The accounts agree on the essential financial story, though: the project became far more expensive than the owners expected.
Why the work became so expensive
They expected a refresh, not a rebuild
Stone’s “zero due diligence” remark captures how poorly the buyers understood the building’s condition before taking on the project. They initially imagined work like new carpet and paint. Instead, reporting described foundational rot and extensive electrical, plumbing and air-conditioning needs. What began as a cosmetic update grew into a substantial reconstruction.
The attractions added complexity
Casa Bonita’s value depended on more than the dining room. Restoring its themed spaces and attractions meant working through finicky elements, including animatronics, while repeated setbacks and missed opening targets stretched the project. It was not simply a matter of repairing a restaurant and reopening the doors.
The experience needed improvement, too
The owners aimed to restore the spectacle while improving the visitor experience, including the food. Chef Dana Rodriguez was brought in to lead the kitchen. Recreating the attraction while addressing what needed to work better made the undertaking broader than preserving the old building exactly as it was.

Did the purchase make Parker and Stone lose money?
The available public remarks do not establish that they lost a particular amount, or that Casa Bonita is now profitable. In 2026, KYGO quoted Stone saying: “It is going really well, and we think we might make our money back sometime, like, 2040. We’re almost breaking even at this point.” That is an owner’s interview statement, not a verified financial account or guaranteed payback date. Parker described the decision as “a really dumb thing to do” from a conventional business perspective, while explaining that without their intervention the attraction might not exist.
For a personal-finance reader, the distinction is important: the reported restoration costs describe what the project consumed, while the remarks about breaking even and recovering the investment describe the owners’ assessment of its financial outlook. The sources cited here do not provide audited accounts that would show the business’s revenue, operating costs, debt or the owners’ total return.
What happened to Casa Bonita, and is it open?
Casa Bonita reopened in preview form in 2023. Parker and Stone announced a full public opening for October 2024, as Rolling Stone reported at the time. The reports cited here do not establish current hours, reservation requirements or access rules, so check Casa Bonita’s official site before planning a visit.
Where can you watch the Casa Bonita documentary?
Arthur Bradford’s documentary ¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor! grew out of an online marketing-video idea into a feature about the renovation. TheWrap reported that it premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Festival and was then streaming on Paramount+. That platform information dates to 2024; current availability is not established here.
