Re:

Treasury Bonds vs. Corporate Bonds: Liquidity, Risk, and Trading Costs

Treasuries generally offer stronger liquidity and lower credit risk; corporate bonds may yield more but add issuer, liquidity, and trading-cost risk. Learn how to compare the exact bond and trade.

U.S. Treasury bonds generally provide deeper liquidity and much lower credit risk than corporate bonds. Treasury interest and principal payments are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, while a corporate bond depends on the issuing company. Corporate bonds often offer higher yields because investors require compensation for issuer credit risk, liquidity risk, and other features. Neither type is immune to price losses: selling before maturity exposes you to the market price available at that time, especially when interest rates or credit conditions have changed.

The practical choice is not simply “Treasury or corporate.” Compare the particular security, your expected holding period, order size, access channel, and likely selling conditions.

Quick comparison

Characteristic U.S. Treasury bond or note Corporate bond
Payment credit exposure Interest and principal payments on direct Treasury securities are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. Payments depend on the issuing company’s ability and willingness to pay.
Typical liquidity Generally high, particularly in actively traded issues; liquidity still differs between securities and market conditions. More issue-specific and usually less consistent; issue size, age, credit quality, maturity, complexity, and dealer inventory matter.
Yield level Usually lower than a comparable corporate bond because the government credit and liquidity risk premia are smaller. Often higher, reflecting expected credit risk, liquidity compensation, interest-rate risk, and any embedded features.
Price risk before maturity Price can rise or fall as market yields change. A payment guarantee does not keep the market price fixed. Price responds to interest rates, perceived issuer credit quality, liquidity, and security-specific terms.
Trading cost Often lower in the deepest segments of the Treasury market, but your actual spread and dealer quote depend on the issue, size, route, and conditions. Can vary substantially. A wider spread, dealer search, and bargaining frictions can materially affect the result.
Access Auctions and secondary-market purchases are available through TreasuryDirect; banks, brokers, and dealers also provide access. Typically accessed through a brokerage or dealer that supports the issue and your order size.

These are category-level tendencies, not execution guarantees. A heavily traded corporate issue can be easier to sell than an obscure Treasury issue, and a stressed market can reduce liquidity across fixed-income markets.

What liquidity means when you trade a bond

Liquidity is the ability to buy or sell when you want at a price reasonably close to the market value. It has several parts:

  • Available counterparties: how many dealers or investors are willing to transact at different prices.
  • Bid-ask spread: the gap between the price available to a seller and the price requested from a buyer.
  • Market depth: how much can be bought or sold before your order moves the price.
  • Speed and certainty: whether you can complete the trade promptly without accepting a deeply unfavorable quote.

FINRA’s investor guidance says, “U.S. Treasury securities tend to have high liquidity, while bond liquidity varies from one bond to another.” It also cautions that “A narrow spread can indicate good liquidity but doesn’t provide a complete picture on its own.” A narrow quote may be available for a small amount while larger orders face a different price, or there may be too few participants if market conditions deteriorate.

Liquidity can deteriorate during market stress. Investors often move toward the most actively traded securities, leaving less liquid issues with fewer quotes and wider spreads. Consequently, a bond that appeared easy to trade in calm conditions may take longer to sell or require a price concession during a shock.

Why Treasury bonds are usually more liquid

Large, standardized market

The U.S. Treasury market consists of standardized government obligations issued frequently through public auctions and traded in a broad secondary market. The market’s size and concentration of participants generally support continuous quoting and high turnover, particularly for newer, benchmark (“on-the-run”) issues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Treasury Department reported 444 public auctions and approximately $29.7 trillion in Treasury marketable securities issued in 2025. Those figures describe issuance scale, not a promise about the spread you will receive on a particular order or a direct measure of secondary-market liquidity.

Institutional spread evidence has a narrow scope

A Securities and Exchange Commission survey of fixed-income market structure reported an estimated interdealer bid-ask spread of about 1 basis point on BrokerTec during 2017 for the secondary Treasury market. That estimate relates to an institutional interdealer venue, a specified year, and a highly liquid market segment. It is not a current retail quote, a guarantee for off-the-run securities, or an estimate of your all-in cost.

On-the-run versus off-the-run issues

The newest benchmark Treasury issue with a given maturity is typically more actively traded. Older “off-the-run” securities can still be liquid, but their quotes and depth may be less favorable. Your maturity, coupon, order amount, and the market’s current focus all influence execution.

Why corporate-bond liquidity varies so widely

A corporate bond is tied to a particular issuer, issue size, coupon, maturity, seniority, and legal structure. Unlike a standardized government auction, many corporate issues trade sporadically after issuance. The SEC’s survey summarizes research finding lower estimated trading costs for:

  • larger issues;

  • more recently issued securities;
  • bonds closer to maturity; and
  • simple bonds without embedded options.

Costs tend to be higher when an issue is small, old, complex, distressed, or difficult for a dealer to finance and hold. Dealer inventory, investor search, and bargaining frictions can all affect the quote. A dealer may need to locate a buyer before offering a firm bid, so the transaction can involve time and negotiation rather than a single exchange-style price.

Liquidity is not the same as credit quality. An investment-grade corporate issue can be expensive to trade if few investors follow it, while a lower-rated issue may trade actively in a specialized market. Check the actual quote and available size instead of inferring liquidity from the rating alone.

Credit risk: the central difference

Treasury payment backing

TreasuryDirect describes interest and principal payments on U.S. Treasury securities as guaranteed on time by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. That supports describing direct Treasury securities as having very low U.S. government credit risk. It does not guarantee that the price will remain at par if you sell before maturity.

Corporate issuer risk

A corporate bond’s promised payments depend on the company’s financial capacity and willingness to pay. Deteriorating earnings, leverage, refinancing needs, industry conditions, or a restructuring can reduce the bond’s market value and increase the chance of missed payments. Even if the company ultimately pays in full, a downgrade or a period of financial stress can make the bond harder to sell and push its price down.

Yield spreads are not pure default forecasts

The difference between a corporate bond’s yield and a Treasury yield of similar maturity is commonly called a spread. It can compensate investors for expected credit losses, but it can also compensate for illiquidity, uncertainty, embedded options, tax treatment, and other terms. The SEC survey summarizes research finding that corporate-bond illiquidity helps explain variation in yield spreads. Therefore, a higher yield does not mean the entire difference is payment for default risk.

Interest-rate and price risk in both markets

Bond prices and market yields generally move in opposite directions. When comparable market yields rise, an existing fixed-coupon bond usually becomes less valuable because new bonds offer more income; its price must fall to bring its yield in line. When yields fall, the existing bond’s price generally rises.

TreasuryDirect explains that a Treasury bond or note’s price depends on its yield to maturity and coupon rate. A price below par corresponds to a yield above the coupon rate; a price above par corresponds to a yield below the coupon rate. The same price-yield logic applies to corporate bonds, with issuer credit and liquidity adjustments layered on top.

Remaining maturity and duration influence sensitivity. Longer-term bonds typically experience larger price changes for a given yield move, although coupon, cash-flow timing, and embedded options mean two bonds with similar maturity dates need not have equal sensitivity. If you expect to sell before maturity, evaluate this market-value risk rather than focusing only on the stated coupon.

What trading a bond actually costs

Your economic cost is broader than a separately displayed brokerage commission. It can include the bid-ask spread, a dealer’s price concession, accrued interest, platform or brokerage charges, and the opportunity cost of waiting for a better quote. A low commission does not make an illiquid bond cheap to trade if the dealer’s bid is far below a reasonable market level.

Historical figures, with their limits

The SEC survey reports the following estimates from studies of earlier periods. They illustrate how costs differ by market and trade size; they are not current retail quotes or promises about your order:

Market or trade category Reported estimate Scope and qualification
Treasury secondary market About 1 basis point Estimated interdealer bid-ask spread on BrokerTec during 2017; institutional, highly liquid segment.
Corporate bonds, all trades 0.84% round trip Estimated average for 2014–2016 based on TRACE data, as discussed by Bessembinder and coauthors (2018).
Corporate trades below $100,000 1.25% round trip 2014–2016 historical estimate; not an investor-specific fee.
Corporate trades from $100,000 to $1 million 0.58% round trip 2014–2016 historical estimate; larger orders generally had lower estimated percentage costs in the study.
Corporate trades from $1 million to $10 million 0.40% round trip 2014–2016 historical estimate.
Corporate block trades above $10 million 0.32% round trip 2014–2016 historical estimate.

These numbers are not directly comparable: the Treasury figure is a one-sided interdealer spread for a specified venue and year, while the corporate figures are estimated customer round-trip execution costs over a multiyear period. Current costs depend on the bond, order size, buy or sell direction, quote, market conditions, and the firm handling the order. No single historical average can substitute for an actual quote.

How to compare two specific bonds

Use the following sequence before submitting an order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the payment source. For a Treasury, confirm the security type and maturity. For a corporate bond, identify the issuer, seniority, rating information available to you, and any recent credit developments.
  2. Measure the rate exposure. Record coupon, maturity, yield to maturity, and—when available—duration or option-adjusted duration. A longer or lower-coupon bond may react more sharply to a yield change.
  3. Inspect liquidity evidence. Look at the quoted bid and ask, the size available at each, recent trading activity, number of dealers or participants quoting, and whether the issue is on-the-run or off-the-run. A single narrow spread is not enough.
  4. Check issue features. Note issue size, age, call or put provisions, sinking-fund terms, convertibility, floating-rate features, and other options. Complexity can increase valuation and trading frictions.
  5. Calculate the intended trade, not an abstract average. Request a quote for your exact amount and direction. Compare the all-in proceeds for a sale or the all-in cost for a purchase, including accrued interest and any stated charge.
  6. Match the security to your holding period. If you can hold to maturity and the issuer pays as promised, interim price changes matter less than they do for a planned near-term sale. Do not assume you can exit at par merely because the bond matures at par.

For an illiquid order, a limit order can prevent you from accepting a price worse than your stated limit. FINRA notes that a limit order may remain unfilled when no counterparty accepts that price; the order type controls your price condition but does not create liquidity.

Buying Treasury securities through TreasuryDirect

TreasuryDirect supports purchases at auctions and purchases in the secondary market. It accepts noncompetitive bids only. Banks, brokers, and dealers can handle competitive and noncompetitive bids, so an investor who needs a particular yield or wants broader order handling may use a brokerage instead.

Key TreasuryDirect conditions

  • The minimum purchase for marketable Treasury securities is $100.
  • New marketable securities bought through TreasuryDirect generally must be held for 45 calendar days before they can be transferred or sold.
  • The 45-day restriction has an exception for purchases funded by reinvestment proceeds.
  • Bills do not pay periodic interest. Notes, bonds, TIPS, and floating-rate notes have their own payment schedules.
  • When applicable, accrued interest is included in the purchase price; TreasuryDirect says that accrued interest is returned with the first regular interest payment.

Practical purchase path

  1. Choose the security type and maturity that match your cash-flow and interest-rate needs.
  2. For an auction, submit a noncompetitive bid through TreasuryDirect by the stated deadline. A noncompetitive bidder accepts the auction’s resulting yield.
  3. For a secondary-market purchase, review the displayed price, yield, accrued interest, and settlement details before confirming.
  4. Record the 45-calendar-day transfer or sale restriction if you are buying through TreasuryDirect and may need early access to the money.
  5. If using a broker, verify its current auction access, secondary-market inventory, quote size, order handling, and charges before placing the order.

Selling before maturity: a decision checklist

Before selling, determine whether the price change comes mainly from market rates, issuer credit, or liquidity. A Treasury sale after rates rise may produce a loss even though every scheduled payment remains backed by the government. A corporate sale may reflect the same rate move plus a wider credit spread or a dealer’s reduced willingness to hold the bond.

  • Request a current bid for the exact quantity, not just an indicative yield.
  • Ask whether the quote includes accrued interest and identify the settlement date.
  • Compare more than one source when possible; dealer inventory and search costs can produce materially different bids.
  • Consider a limit order if protecting a minimum price is more important than immediate execution.
  • Check whether your access channel imposes a holding-period restriction, particularly for TreasuryDirect purchases.
  • Compare the expected sale proceeds with the value of holding to maturity, including coupons, taxes applicable to you, and the risk that the issuer or market conditions change.

An order that does not fill is not necessarily a platform failure; it may indicate that the limit is above available bids or that the issue is temporarily illiquid. Conversely, an immediate fill at a surprisingly poor price can indicate that the market was deeper at a small displayed size than at your full order amount.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

“Treasuries cannot lose money.”

Direct Treasury payment risk is very low, but a bond sold before maturity can be worth more or less than its purchase price. Separate payment-at-maturity risk from interim market-price risk.

“The corporate yield premium is all default compensation.”

Credit risk is only one component. Liquidity compensation, options, maturity, tax considerations, and market-wide risk appetite can all affect the spread over Treasuries.

“A narrow spread proves the bond is liquid.”

Check quote size, trading activity, number of participants, and the ability to execute the entire order. FINRA specifically warns that spread width alone is incomplete.

“A commission-free trade is free.”

Look at the bid or ask you actually receive. Execution price, spread, accrued interest, and other charges determine the economic cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“All bonds with the same maturity behave alike.”

Coupon, duration, credit quality, embedded options, issue age, and liquidity can make price changes very different even when maturity dates are close.

“TreasuryDirect works like a brokerage account.”

TreasuryDirect offers official auction and secondary-market access but accepts only noncompetitive auction bids and generally imposes a 45-day holding period on newly purchased marketable securities. Confirm that those conditions fit your liquidity needs.

Which type fits which objective?

Prioritizing payment certainty

Direct Treasury securities are the clearer fit when minimizing U.S. government credit exposure is the primary objective and you can tolerate price changes before maturity.

Seeking additional income

A corporate bond may offer a higher stated yield, but treat the difference as compensation for a package of risks and costs—not as free income. Examine the issuer, issue terms, liquidity, and the possibility of loss or delayed execution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Planning a near-term sale

Favor securities with demonstrable depth and multiple available quotes. Your expected exit cost may matter more than a small yield advantage, particularly for a modest order.

Holding to a known date

Matching maturity to a future liability can reduce the need to sell in an unfavorable market. You still need to assess payment risk for a corporate issuer and reinvestment risk for coupons or proceeds.

Bottom line

Treasuries generally combine very low U.S. government credit risk with the deepest and most consistent liquidity, while corporate bonds can provide higher yields by exposing you to issuer risk and more variable trading conditions. Compare the specific bond and intended trade: credit quality, duration, issue features, quoted depth, accrued interest, and all-in execution cost. Historical averages can explain why the markets differ, but only a current quote for your order tells you what selling or buying will cost now.
