Choose a Treasury bill when you can match its maturity to a known spending date and can leave the money invested until then. Choose a high-yield savings account when access matters more than locking in a bill’s maturity date. Before deciding, compare a current bill auction rate with the account’s current APY, then weigh access terms, fees, minimums, insurance and taxes.
How Treasury bills and savings accounts differ
A Treasury bill is a marketable, short-term U.S. government security with a set maturity date. A high-yield savings account is a bank deposit account whose rate and access terms depend on the provider. They can both hold short-term cash, but they do not work the same way.
| Feature | Treasury bills | High-yield savings account |
|---|---|---|
| Return | The rate is set at auction. Bills are generally sold at a discount or at par; at maturity, Treasury pays face value. The difference between the purchase price and face value is the return. TreasuryDirect explains available bills and purchase details; see also TreasuryDirect’s bill information. | Compare the provider’s current APY. A named account’s current APY and rate terms are not established here; check directly with the provider. |
| Access | Designed around maturity, though a holder may sell before then. Sale price and timing are not guaranteed to equal the maturity payment; confirm the selling provider’s process and terms. | Withdrawal and transfer timing depend on the account’s terms. Verify them with the provider before depositing. |
| Protection | Not FDIC-insured. A bill is a U.S. government obligation, not an insured bank deposit. | Qualifying deposits at FDIC-insured banks are covered within applicable limits and ownership rules. |
| Taxes | Interest is subject to federal income tax and exempt from state and local income taxes, according to IRS Publication 550. | Do not assume the Treasury state-and-local tax treatment applies to bank interest; check applicable tax guidance. |
| Practical work | Select a term and plan for maturity or reinvestment. Treasury bills can be bought through TreasuryDirect or through a bank or broker; terms and costs may vary by provider. | Open an account and review its provider-specific rate, fees, minimums, eligibility and access conditions. |
When a Treasury bill may fit
You have a known date for using the money
If you expect to need the cash on a particular date, choose a bill whose maturity fits that timing. TreasuryDirect lists regular bill maturities of 4, 6, 8, 13, 17, 26 and 52 weeks. A bill pays face value at maturity, so matching the term to the planned expense can make the timing more predictable than relying on an early sale.
You can leave the money invested until maturity
Treasury bills can be sold before maturity, but an early sale is not the same as withdrawing from a savings account. The sale price may differ from face value, and timing depends on the route used to sell. If you may need the money early, confirm the intermediary’s process and market price rather than assuming you will receive the full maturity amount.

You are comfortable managing a security
The TreasuryDirect product page lists a $100 minimum purchase, in $100 increments. Purchases can also be made through a bank or broker, but the available minimums, fees, access to the secondary market and settlement timing are not necessarily the same across providers. Decide how you will handle the bill at maturity, including whether you will use the proceeds or reinvest them.
When a high-yield savings account may fit
Your spending date is uncertain
A savings account may be the more practical place for cash you could need on short notice, provided its withdrawal and transfer terms suit you. Those terms vary by account, so check how to access funds and how long transfers take before relying on the account for an urgent expense.

You want a deposit account rather than a security
FDIC insurance applies to qualifying deposits held at FDIC-insured banks, not to Treasury bills. The FDIC’s standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category; ownership rules determine how accounts are aggregated. Review the bank’s insurance status and your total deposits across ownership categories and accounts. See the FDIC’s deposit insurance guidance.
You are comparing a real account offer
Do not treat a national savings-rate benchmark as a high-yield account quote. The FDIC’s national-rate table dated March 16, 2026 is a benchmark, not a current offer from a named provider. Check the account’s current APY and its eligibility, minimum balance, fees and rate terms directly with the provider.

How to compare the return fairly
- Use dated rates. Check a current Treasury bill auction result and the savings account’s current APY on the same date. Auction results change, and an account’s APY should not be treated as fixed for a bill’s term unless its terms establish that.
- Compare the same balance and time horizon. Make sure each estimate reflects the amount you actually plan to set aside and the period you expect to keep it there. Do not use an old bill example or a broad national savings average as today’s offer.
- Account for costs and conditions. Include any applicable purchase, account or transfer fees, minimums, eligibility requirements and restrictions on access.
- Consider taxes and your circumstances. Treasury bill interest is federally taxable and exempt from state and local income taxes. Bank interest may not receive the same state or local treatment. Tax outcomes depend on your circumstances; consult applicable guidance or a tax professional if needed.
- Choose for access as well as yield. A higher headline rate may not suit money you could need before a bill matures or before a bank transfer completes.
What happens when a bill matures?
At maturity, Treasury pays the bill’s face value. The difference between that amount and what you paid is the return. You can use the proceeds or plan to reinvest, but a reinvestment is a new purchase at the auction rate then available; the original bill’s rate does not establish a future rate.
The IRS says Treasury bill interest is subject to federal income tax and exempt from state and local income taxes. The purchase-price-to-face-value difference is generally reported as interest when the bill matures. Individual tax situations vary, so use IRS guidance or qualified tax advice for your own return.

A practical choice by cash need
- Choose a bill to consider if you know when you will need the money, can align a bill maturity with that date, and can tolerate the operational steps of purchase and maturity planning.
- Choose a savings account to consider if access flexibility is important, after verifying the account’s transfer terms, current APY, fees, minimums, eligibility and FDIC-insured status.
- Do not choose on yield alone if access, insurance, taxes or provider conditions change the usefulness of the cash for your particular purpose.
