Omdia says Transsion’s combined TECNO, Infinix and itel business held 47% of Africa’s smartphone shipments in Q1 2026. Counterpoint, ranking individual brands, says Samsung overtook TECNO in the same quarter. Transsion remains the group leader in Omdia’s figures, but no single Transsion brand can be called the uncontested leader across both reports.
What does “Africa’s smartphone king” mean?
Transsion is a parent company, not one phone brand. Its principal mobile-phone brands are TECNO, Infinix and itel; its wider portfolio also includes Carlcare after-sales service, oraimo accessories and Syinix home appliances. Transsion’s corporate profile describes its phone brands as serving emerging markets.

When a report groups TECNO, Infinix and itel together, it measures Transsion’s position as a corporate group. A brand ranking instead compares TECNO or Infinix separately with Samsung, HONOR and other individual brands. Neither measure alone establishes which company has the most active users, highest revenue, greatest profit or best customer satisfaction.
- Shipment share counts phones shipped into the distribution channel during a period; it is not the same as devices consumers bought or currently use.
- Sell-through refers to sales to consumers, while installed base refers to phones in active use.
- Revenue share measures the value of sales, not the number of devices, and can favor vendors selling higher-priced phones.
Why do Omdia and Counterpoint give different Q1 2026 answers?
The two firms report materially different estimates for Africa’s Q1 2026 smartphone market and use different rankings. Their public summaries do not provide enough detail to reconcile the underlying datasets, so the figures should be attributed rather than blended into a single ranking.

| Omdia, Q4 2025 | Transsion held 44% share. | Group-level shipment share in a different quarter. |
Different vendor definitions, shipment estimates, geographic coverage, channel methodology, rounding and publication timing may all contribute. The available summaries do not establish which factor accounts for how much of the difference. The safe conclusion is narrower: Omdia puts Transsion first as a group, while Counterpoint says Samsung led TECNO among individual brands in Q1.
What Omdia’s latest figures say about Transsion’s scale
Omdia’s May 2026 report estimates that Africa shipped 19.9 million smartphones in Q1 2026, up 3% year over year. It puts Transsion’s share at 47%, with group shipments up 4%. Omdia credits inventory management and affordable-device strength, citing the TECNO Pop 10 and Infinix Spark 40C 4G as examples—not as verified continent-wide best-sellers.
The same report says HONOR grew 101% year over year, while Xiaomi shipments fell 28% and OPPO’s fell 7%. Samsung shipments declined marginally in Omdia’s account, although its Galaxy A series remained strong in the US$150–299 segment.

Omdia’s view of the outlook also changed between reports. Its February 2026 release had put Africa’s 2025 shipments at 84.4 million, up 13%, with 23.1 million units shipped in Q4, up 14%; it said Transsion had 44% share in Q4 and that 81% of 2025 shipments were priced below US$200. That February release forecast a 23% decline for the 2026 market. In May, Omdia revised its forecast to a 28% contraction. Both are forecasts, not realized full-year results. Omdia’s February report provides the earlier figures.
How Transsion built a broad position—and why it is vulnerable
A portfolio aimed at different price points
Having three phone brands gives Transsion more than one route to the customer: itel is associated with lower-cost devices and migration from feature phones, TECNO spans mass-market phones and increasingly higher tiers, and Infinix targets value-conscious buyers with youth-oriented and performance-focused positioning. This is a useful way to understand the portfolio, not a claim that every model or buyer fits a fixed segment.
Omdia’s Q4 2025 data show how important low prices are to the market: 81% of African smartphone shipments that year were below US$200. That concentration can support a high-volume group such as Transsion, but it also leaves the business exposed when the cost of making entry-level phones rises or consumers cannot afford replacements.

Distribution, inventory and service
Omdia points to inventory management, channel conditions and established distribution as factors in vendor performance. It also says vendors with financing ecosystems, operator partnerships, localized manufacturing and extensive last-mile distribution are better positioned as affordability tightens. Transsion’s Carlcare network is part of its wider service portfolio, but the company profile alone does not prove that this network caused its market share.

Component costs and purchasing power
Both Omdia and Counterpoint identify memory-cost pressures as a challenge. More expensive components raise device costs and squeeze the economics of low-priced phones; brands may have to adjust prices, specifications or model availability. Omdia says phones below US$200 accounted for 75% of Q1 2026 shipments and highlights the US$80–150 band as particularly exposed to inflation and weak purchasing power.
Currency volatility, import restrictions and foreign-exchange constraints also matter in individual countries. A continental shipment ranking can therefore conceal very different costs and consumer conditions from one market to another.

Which competitors are putting pressure on Transsion?
Samsung: a stronger individual-brand rival
Counterpoint says Samsung overtook TECNO in Q1 2026 at the individual-brand level, and attributes Samsung’s advantage in part to stronger inventory availability while TECNO and other brands faced shortages. Omdia separately reports that the Galaxy A series remained strong in the US$150–299 range. Together, those findings make Samsung the clearest challenge to Transsion’s brand-level position, without overturning Omdia’s group-level result.
HONOR: fast growth in selected markets
Counterpoint reports 98% year-over-year growth for HONOR in Q1 2026, compared with Omdia’s 101% estimate. Counterpoint highlights growth in South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria, where it says HONOR is using affordable-premium positioning and operator partnerships. Those gains are significant, but they do not mean HONOR is advancing equally across the continent.
Xiaomi and OPPO: pressure is not uniform
Omdia’s Q1 account shows Xiaomi and OPPO shipments declining, so they should not be described as gaining continent-wide share on the strength of these figures. Competition can still be important in particular countries and price tiers, but the cited reports do not support a broad claim that either overtook Transsion.

Why a continent-wide ranking hides country differences
Omdia’s Q1 2026 estimates illustrate how uneven the market was. Nigeria and South Africa grew, while several other countries contracted:
| Market | Omdia’s Q1 2026 year-over-year result | Reported context |
|---|---|---|
| Nigeria | Shipments grew 8%. | Demand continued for affordable 4G and 5G devices. |
| South Africa | Shipments grew 17%. | Higher average selling prices and stronger premium and mid-range demand. |
| Kenya | Shipments fell 16%. | Higher prices lengthened replacement cycles. |
| Egypt | Shipments fell 10%. | Supply-chain and geopolitical pressures. |
| Algeria | Shipments fell 28%. | Import rules, foreign-exchange constraints and manufacturing delays. |
| Morocco | Shipments grew 6%. | Import duties were reduced to 2.5% from 17.5%. |
These figures are country-level shipment estimates, not measures of household ownership or sales revenue. They also show why a brand’s prospects depend on local prices, supply, import policy and the mix of buyers—not simply its continent-wide position.
What this market shift means if you are buying a phone
A brand’s shipment ranking is not a buying recommendation. Transsion phones are likely to remain prominent in channels where sub-US$200 prices, prepaid distribution and broad retail availability matter. Samsung competes strongly in the US$150–299 range, while HONOR is becoming more relevant in selected markets for buyers considering mid-range or affordable-premium options. None of these patterns establishes that one brand is best for every buyer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAs components get more expensive, the cheapest phones may be repriced, offered with different specifications or become harder to find. Before choosing a model or financing offer, compare the actual phone and local terms:
- Confirm local warranty coverage, authorized repair options and parts availability.
- Check the manufacturer’s software-update policy for the specific model.
- Verify network-band compatibility and whether the device supports the 4G or 5G service you need.
- Compare battery replacement options and repair costs, not only the original battery rating.
- For financing, check the deposit, total repayment cost, any carrier lock and the return terms; a low monthly payment does not necessarily mean a low total price.
Prices, warranty terms, model configurations and network compatibility vary by country and retailer, so a continent-wide price comparison would be misleading. Transsion lists its phone brands and Carlcare service on its corporate site; Samsung’s Africa site is here, and HONOR’s global site is here. Check local availability and terms before relying on an advertised offer.
So, is Transsion still Africa’s smartphone king?
By Omdia’s Q1 2026 group-level shipment measure, yes: Transsion retained first place with 47% share. By Counterpoint’s individual-brand ranking for that quarter, Samsung overtook TECNO. “King” is defensible as shorthand for Transsion’s scale as a three-brand group—not as proof that one of its brands leads every ranking, that it earns the most, or that its position is secure. Omdia’s revised 2026 contraction forecast and the conflicting market estimates make the next year especially uncertain.
