Its community fund combines an initial $500,000 investment with annual contributions tied to the amount of CO₂ transported and stored. Nebraska Community Foundation (NCF) estimates that more than $7 million could be distributed over the next decade, but that is a projection, not a guaranteed total.
What the Trailblazer pipeline does
The operating system carries captured carbon dioxide from ethanol plants to underground storage in southeast Wyoming. The Associated Press reported that, when operations began, the system connected 11 Nebraska ethanol plants and one in Iowa, with the CO₂ stored 9,000 feet underground. Tallgrass converted an existing natural gas pipeline and built branches to connect ethanol plants; not every segment should be assumed to be reused.
A January 2026 Your Ag Network republication of Nebraska Examiner reporting described the route as 392 miles through Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa and Wyoming. That mileage and route are as reported in that article, rather than an independently measured map distance.
How the community fund is financed
Tallgrass established the Trailblazer Community Investment Fund under a Community Benefits Agreement with Bold Nebraska. Nebraska Community Foundation manages the fund. NCF lists an initial $500,000 investment and annual contributions through 2035 calculated at $0.10 per metric ton of CO₂ transported and stored through the Trailblazer system. The contribution formula is based on transported and stored volume, so the annual amount depends on those volumes.
#1 Best Overall
- Electrochemical sensor technology detects CO gas
- Easy installation, no wiring needed, detects during a power failure by operating on 2-AA batteries (included); Install on a wall of your home or place on a tabletop
- Green LED indicates power to the carbon monoxide detector, while an 85-decibel alarm & a red LED indicates the presence of carbon monoxide
- Event Memory records the last time carbon monoxide was detected or when the unit was last tested
NCF anticipates more than $7 million in distributions over the next decade. That figure is the foundation’s estimate, not a guaranteed payout or a statement of the amount already granted. The available information does not establish a current cumulative total of grants paid.
What the grants support
The fund’s three stated focus areas are:
- Quality early childhood development
- Food security through food pantries
- Long-term care for elders, including Medicaid-eligible senior care referenced in the Associated Press account
NCF says grants are unrestricted for qualifying local organizational needs. Its official fund page describes grants of $500 to $2,000 per eligible organization, with the amount depending on the number of participants and grants distributed equally among eligible organizations.
Rank #2
- Easy Installation - simply plug-in to a standard, 120V outlet in your home
- 2-AA battery backup provides protection during a power outage
- 85-decibel alarm announces when carbon monoxide is detected
- Peak Level Memory records the last time carbon monoxide was detected or when the unit was last tested
- Test-Hush Button makes testing the detector or silencing false alarms easy
Who can apply and how
This is not an open application program for any organization or individual. NCF identifies eligible organizations and invites them to apply. The foundation lists nonprofit, church and government entities among applicant types, subject to requirements involving the organization’s service, location, operating history and nondiscrimination practices.
Eligible organizations must serve communities in the program’s designated counties across Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa and Wyoming. Because the county list and conditions govern eligibility, prospective applicants should consult NCF’s official Trailblazer Community Investment Fund page for the current service-area list, requirements and application details.

Rank #3
- Electrochemical sensor technology detects CO gas
- Easy installation, no wiring needed, detects during a power failure by operating on 2-AA batteries (included)
- Conveniently designed & portable: simple to install on a wall of your home or place on a tabletop
- Green LED indicates power to the smoke detector, while an 85-decibel alarm & a red LED indicates the presence of carbon monoxide
- Peak Level Memory records the last time carbon monoxide was detected or when the unit was last tested
What the community commitment means in practice
The fund directs project-related contributions to local organizations working in three defined areas; it is not a direct payment to every resident or landowner along the route. Its scale depends in part on the amount of CO₂ transported and stored, while the annual organizational award is limited to NCF’s stated grant range and eligibility rules.
The January 2026 article reported that more than 230 organizations had been identified in 31 impacted counties at that time. That is a contemporaneous count, not a current total; NCF’s official page is the appropriate source for current eligibility information.

- BUILT FOR EVERY HOUSEHOLD: Designed to help provide dependable carbon monoxide monitoring for everyday residential use; supports renters, homeowners, and pet owners seeking added awareness and protection from CO hazards in the home
The project’s community agreement and grant program should also be distinguished from claims about environmental outcomes. The available information describes the pipeline’s purpose and storage destination, but does not establish comparative lifecycle emissions or prove a net climate benefit.

Nebraska’s Department of Water, Energy, and Environment separately published a proposed air construction permit notice for a Tallgrass High Plains Carbon Storage facility at Fairmont in Fillmore County, with public-comment dates in 2026. That notice concerns a separate proposed facility; it does not mean Trailblazer is still waiting to start or establish that the Fairmont facility is operating.
