Toyota Motor North America said in August 2024 that its own systems were “not breached or compromised” after a threat actor claimed to leak Toyota-related files. Toyota attributed the data to an unnamed third-party entity that was misrepresented as Toyota. The reported archive size and contents came from the threat actor and were not independently verified.

What Toyota said about the incident

BleepingComputer reported on August 19, 2024, that Toyota was responding to a claimed data leak, then updated its report on August 20 with Toyota Motor North America’s clarification. Toyota initially told the publication: “We are aware of the situation. The issue is limited in scope and is not a system wide issue.” It said it was engaging with impacted people and would provide assistance if needed. BleepingComputer’s report attributed those statements to Toyota.

In its later clarification, Toyota Motor North America said its systems were “not breached or compromised.” The company said the data came from “a third-party entity that is misrepresented as Toyota.” It did not identify the entity. The reported clarification concerns Toyota Motor North America (TMNA); it should not be read as evidence that TMNA’s own network was breached.

What the threat actor claimed was leaked

ZeroSevenGroup claimed it stole and leaked a 240 GB archive. BleepingComputer reported that the group described the files as including employee and customer information, contracts, financial information, network details, and credentials. Those are the threat actor’s claims, not a verified inventory of exposed records or a confirmed measure of customer data.

What is known—and what remains unclear

BleepingComputer said timestamps on files it examined indicated they may have been stolen or at least created on December 25, 2022. That date does not establish when anyone gained access or when theft occurred.

The report did not establish how the third party was accessed, when Toyota learned of the event, how many people were affected, or whether every category claimed by ZeroSevenGroup was present in the archive. Toyota said it was engaging with impacted people, but the report supplied no incident-specific notification instructions or count of people contacted.

How to interpret the claims

  • Toyota’s statements: TMNA said the issue was limited in scope, that its systems were not breached or compromised, and that the data was associated with an unnamed third party misrepresented as Toyota.
  • Threat actor’s assertions: ZeroSevenGroup claimed a 240 GB leak and described the archive’s contents. The report does not independently verify those claims.
  • Unanswered questions: the identity of the third party, the access method, the number of affected people, and a confirmed theft date were not disclosed in the report.

Do not confuse this with Toyota Motor Philippines notices

Toyota Motor Philippines issued separate notices about other matters. One May 2024 advisory discussed an incident involving some registered users of its MyToyota mobile app, reported to the Philippine National Privacy Commission. The company attributed that incident to unintentional human error, said financial transaction data was not included, and said concerned customers were notified. The Philippines advisory is not evidence about the TMNA-related third-party event.

A separate Toyota Motor Philippines advisory addressed reports of unauthorized access to customer data at several dealerships. Toyota said it was investigating and cooperating with the National Privacy Commission, and warned people about phishing emails, fraudulent texts, and suspicious calls. That dealership matter is also distinct from the incident discussed by BleepingComputer.

What customers can do

The report did not provide a verified list of affected customers or special incident-response instructions. If you receive a message claiming to be about this event, verify it through Toyota’s official channels rather than following links or sharing personal or financial details in an unexpected email, text, or call. If Toyota contacts you directly, use independently confirmed contact information to check the notice.
