On March 11, 2019, Airbiquity announced a $15 million minority investment jointly from Toyota Motor Corporation, DENSO Corporation and Toyota Tsusho Corporation. The Seattle automotive-software company said the investors would also collaborate with it to develop and commercialize systems for remotely updating vehicle software. The transaction was a strategic partnership, not an acquisition or a disclosed promise that Toyota vehicles would use Airbiquity’s products.
What the 2019 deal announced
Airbiquity said the financing would support development of connected-vehicle software and cloud services, alongside work with the three investors on automotive over-the-air (OTA) technology. The stated goals included remotely updating and managing vehicle software, improving production and vehicle-lifecycle operations, and supporting mobility services built around vehicle data and analytics. Airbiquity’s March 11 announcement described the investment as a minority financing.
Who invested—and what each company disclosed
The shorthand “Toyota invested” obscures that three companies participated. Toyota Motor was one investor; Toyota Tsusho is Toyota’s trading and business-development arm, and DENSO is a major automotive supplier with close ties to Toyota. Their joint investment was $15 million.

The releases do not disclose Airbiquity’s valuation, the investors’ ownership percentages, or a detailed cap table. They describe a minority investment and collaboration, not a controlling stake or an acquisition.

What Airbiquity did
Founded in 1997 and headquartered in Seattle, Airbiquity developed automotive telematics and connected-vehicle software. Its work was infrastructure for automakers and their partners, rather than a consumer car brand or an autonomous-driving program. Airbiquity was led by President and CEO Kamyar Moinzadeh at the time of the deal.
OTAmatic: managing vehicle software updates
OTAmatic was Airbiquity’s automotive OTA software-update and data-management offering. The announced collaboration focused on accelerating development and commercialization of systems for remotely updating and managing vehicle software. The announcement did not establish that Toyota had selected OTAmatic for specific models or guaranteed it a production contract.

Choreo: connected-vehicle service delivery
Airbiquity described Choreo as a cloud-based platform for delivering connected-vehicle services. Contemporary coverage characterized it as connecting automakers with participants such as mobile operators, call centers and content providers. Choreo and OTAmatic were separate offerings: one addressed service delivery, while the other centered on OTA software updates and related data management. GeekWire’s 2019 report discussed both products.
Why updating a car over the air is different from updating a phone
OTA, short for “over the air,” means delivering software wirelessly to a vehicle, typically through a dedicated communications module using a cellular or Wi-Fi connection. Depending on the vehicle and system, updates can involve infotainment, navigation or electronic control units (ECUs). They can correct defects, add features after sale, or improve operations and maintenance without requiring every software change to be installed through a dealer visit.

A car is not a single device with one software package. It can contain many ECUs and components from different suppliers, and a change to vehicle software can affect reliability, availability or safety. A dependable update process therefore has to address security as well as compatibility and the consequences of a failed or interrupted installation. The 2019 investor announcements stressed security and reliability, but did not describe Airbiquity’s specific authentication, validation, rollback or recovery mechanisms.
- Potential benefits: faster delivery of corrections, feature additions after sale, fewer update-related service visits, and more centralized management over a vehicle’s life.
- Operational constraints: vehicles need connectivity, updates can make a vehicle unavailable during installation, and software must work across varied vehicle systems and supplier components.
- Risks to manage: insecure or interrupted delivery, compatibility problems, safety and regulatory implications, and data-governance or privacy concerns.
OTA can make it easier to distribute a correction; that alone does not prove a vehicle is safer. The update itself needs appropriate engineering and safeguards, and the releases do not provide enough technical detail to evaluate Airbiquity’s particular methods.

Why Toyota-group companies had a strategic reason to invest
The investment paired Airbiquity’s specialization in connected-vehicle software with companies that had automotive engineering, manufacturing and commercial experience. For the investors, a closer relationship could help accelerate OTA systems toward use in vehicles and improve the management of software across production and the vehicle lifecycle. For Airbiquity, the capital and collaboration offered a route to work more closely with major automotive companies.
That kind of strategic backing has limits. A partnership does not ensure adoption: automakers and suppliers still have to integrate software into complex vehicle programs, validate it and manage the risks of deployment. The 2019 announcement stated an intention to work toward development, commercialization and vehicle implementation; it did not name a specific Toyota model, establish exclusivity, or report later deployment results.

Why a 22-year-old Seattle company drew attention
Airbiquity had been founded about 22 years before the March 2019 financing, so “startup” described its place in contemporary coverage more than its age or maturity. Its appeal was its established focus on automotive software just as connected vehicles were making remote software management more strategically important.
Airbiquity said its connected-vehicle programs operated in more than 60 countries. GeekWire reported at the time that the company supported more than eight million vehicles, had about 70 employees and had raised more than $80 million. Those latter figures are contemporary reporting, not figures presented as audited company accounts. GeekWire also reported that Moinzadeh said Airbiquity had been executing OTA updates for fleet-management and in-vehicle-infotainment programs since 2009.
The company’s 1997 founding, Seattle headquarters and then-CEO are identified in Toyota Tsusho’s release. The “22-year-old” description applies to 2019, not to the company’s age today.
What the announcement does not establish
- Airbiquity’s valuation, the investors’ ownership percentages or a complete allocation of the $15 million.
- A guaranteed supplier agreement, exclusive relationship or deployment in any particular Toyota vehicle.
- How much revenue the collaboration produced, whether it remained active, or what return the investors ultimately earned.
- Specific technical safeguards or regulatory certifications for Airbiquity’s update systems.
The transaction is best understood as a strategic investment in automotive software infrastructure: three Toyota-related companies backed a specialist in OTA and connected-vehicle services while seeking to advance remote software management for vehicles.
