Microsoft notified employees of another round of job cuts on July 10, 2023, affecting customer service, customer support and sales roles. The company confirmed the layoffs but did not disclose a worldwide headcount. A later Washington state filing listed 276 affected positions—210 in Redmond and Bellevue and 66 remote—so 276 is a documented Washington total, not the global size of the round.

What happened on July 10, 2023?

The cuts were first communicated internally to employees; Microsoft did not announce a global figure publicly. It confirmed the layoffs to GeekWire, describing the action as a routine organizational and workforce adjustment while saying it would continue to prioritize strategic growth areas and support for customers and partners. The reporting identified customer service, customer support and sales teams across multiple roles and geographies. GeekWire’s July 10, 2023 report also cited employee posts suggesting that direct sales and customer-success-related roles were among those affected. Those accounts provide role-level clues, not a verified count by team.

What does the 276 figure mean?

A Washington state WARN filing cited by GeekWire listed 276 positions associated with the cuts: 210 in Redmond and Bellevue, Washington, and 66 remote. The filing is geographically limited and does not establish the worldwide total, that all listed workers lived in Washington, or that every position was ultimately eliminated. Microsoft did not publish a complete global count or a function-by-function breakdown.

Figure What it describes What it does not establish
276 positions Positions listed in the Washington WARN filing cited by GeekWire The worldwide total for the July round
210 positions Redmond and Bellevue locations, per the same filing A department-level count
66 positions Remote positions, per the same filing Where every affected employee lived

WARN notices identify planned or potentially affected positions; they are not always a final count of terminated employees. The 276 figure should not be added automatically to Microsoft’s earlier 10,000-job reduction: the available public reporting does not reconcile the July positions with that program.

How did the July cuts relate to Microsoft’s 2023 restructuring?

The July action came shortly after Microsoft’s fiscal year ended on June 30, 2023. It followed the company’s January announcement of a much larger reduction, but Microsoft did not state that every July role was part of, or separate from, the January program.

  1. January 18, 2023: Microsoft announced plans to eliminate approximately 10,000 jobs globally—less than 5% of its workforce—by the end of fiscal 2023’s third quarter. The company cited changing customer demand and spending, cost alignment, investment in strategic growth, hardware portfolio changes and office-space consolidation. Microsoft’s announcement described the plan and a related $1.2 billion charge for severance, hardware changes and lease consolidation.
  2. June 30, 2023: Microsoft’s fiscal 2023 ended. Its annual report says the January restructuring reduced the workforce by approximately 10,000 jobs through fiscal Q3 and identifies $800 million in employee severance expenses within the $1.2 billion charge. Microsoft’s FY2023 annual report does not assign a separate worldwide count to the July round.
  3. July 10, 2023: Microsoft internally notified employees of cuts affecting customer service, support and sales. The later Washington filing documented 276 positions, but the global total remained undisclosed.

Microsoft fiscal-year transitions can bring organizational changes, and GeekWire noted that timing as context. It is not a company-confirmed explanation for the roles eliminated in July.

Did artificial intelligence cause the layoffs?

The available evidence does not establish that AI directly caused this specific round or replaced the affected employees. Microsoft’s January statement named AI as a strategic growth area, while also discussing customer demand, costs, hardware and real estate. The July reporting identified support and sales functions but did not connect individual job eliminations to AI. It is reasonable to note that automation could affect such work over time; it would not be accurate to present that possibility as the documented reason for these cuts.

What was Microsoft’s business and workforce context?

Microsoft was profitable and growing during fiscal 2023, even as it reallocated resources. The company reported $211.9 billion in revenue, up 7% year over year, and $88.5 billion in GAAP operating income, up 6%; GAAP net income was $72.4 billion. Its $1.2 billion restructuring charge reduced operating income. Microsoft’s FY2023 earnings release also reflects continued cloud growth alongside weakness in some hardware and personal-computing areas. Those results do not prove the cuts were financially necessary or unnecessary: companies can cut roles while profitable to change cost structures or redirect investment.

At June 30, 2023, Microsoft reported approximately 221,000 full-time employees worldwide: 120,000 in the United States and 101,000 internationally. Its broad workforce categories included 89,000 in operations, 72,000 in product research and development, 45,000 in sales and marketing, and 15,000 in general and administration. These categories are not a precise count of customer-service or customer-support staff, and they do not show how many people in any category were affected by the July cuts. The annual report provides the company’s workforce figures.
