The proposed class action over engine failures in certain Scion FR-S, Toyota 86/GR86 and Subaru BRZ models ended in January 2025 without a court ruling on whether the alleged defect exists. The complaint made claims about lubrication and oil-pressure problems, but those allegations were never established in a merits decision. The case’s dismissal also did not award owners repairs, compensation or warranty coverage.
What the lawsuit alleged
In Young v. Subaru Corporation et al., Laura Young filed a proposed class action on July 1, 2024, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. The defendants were Subaru Corporation, Subaru of America, Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Motor North America. The complaint alleged that certain boxer engines used in Scion FR-S, Toyota 86/GR86 and Subaru BRZ vehicles were prone to lubrication-related damage, including low oil pressure or oil starvation.
Coverage of the complaint also described an allegation that sealant debris could obstruct oil passages. These are claims made in the pleading, not independently verified causes of engine failure across the vehicles. Which models were included in the proposed class?
The proposed scope, as summarized in coverage of the complaint, included the following vehicles and model years. These were the plaintiff’s proposed class boundaries, not a court-certified class or a manufacturer-confirmed defect range.

The pleading’s proposed range covered vehicles with 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter boxer engines. Model year and engine size may help an owner understand whether a vehicle fits the complaint’s alleged scope, but inclusion in that range does not establish that a particular car is defective or entitled to relief.
What happened to the case?
The parties filed a joint stipulation of voluntary dismissal. The case was terminated in January 2025: the dismissal was with prejudice as to Young individually and without prejudice as to putative class members. Pending motions were dismissed as moot. In practical terms, Young’s individual claim was dismissed and the proposed class members did not receive a merits ruling through this case. The dismissal is not a finding that the engines had the alleged defect, but it is not a court finding that the allegations were false either. The case ended without deciding that technical question. The available reporting does not establish whether a later related action or official defect determination exists.
What is known about the reported engine failure?
Complaint coverage reported that Young bought a used 2019 Toyota 86 in 2021 and experienced total engine failure in 2023 at approximately 64,000 miles. That is an account about one plaintiff and one vehicle, not a fleet-wide failure rate or evidence that every car within the proposed years had the same problem. No reliable population-level failure statistic was identified in the materials reviewed. Anecdotal reports, even when numerous, cannot by themselves establish how often engines fail without a dependable count of affected vehicles and the total number of comparable vehicles in service.
What the lawsuit means for an owner’s finances
The filing and dismissal do not, by themselves, determine an individual owner’s warranty rights, eligibility for a repair, or entitlement to compensation. No such relief was established in the case materials. An owner facing an engine problem should treat a diagnosis, repair estimate and applicable warranty terms as separate questions from whether the vehicle matches the complaint’s proposed class definition.

- Separate diagnosis from allegation: A mechanic’s findings about a particular engine are evidence about that vehicle; the complaint’s theories about oil pressure, oil starvation or sealant debris do not establish the cause in an individual case.
- Review coverage directly: Ask the manufacturer or selling dealer about applicable warranty terms and any available assistance for the specific vehicle. The lawsuit’s dismissal does not answer those questions.
Bottom line on the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ engine lawsuit
Young v. Subaru Corporation et al. was a proposed class action alleging lubrication-related engine defects across specified FR-S, Toyota 86/GR86 and BRZ model years. It was voluntarily dismissed in January 2025 without a merits ruling on the alleged defect. The filing is not proof of a general defect, a failure-rate statistic, or an automatic basis for owner compensation or warranty coverage.
