Toshiba completed its exit from the laptop business in 2020 by transferring its remaining 19.9% stake in Dynabook to Sharp. The business did not shut down: Toshiba’s former PC subsidiary continued as Dynabook under Sharp ownership.
What Toshiba’s exit means
The change was about ownership, not the end of the laptop operation. Sharp took full ownership of the business that had been Toshiba Client Solutions, while the company continued under the Dynabook name.
The “35 years” in the headline describes the rounded span from Toshiba’s 1985 T1100 milestone to the 2020 ownership transfer. Dynabook identifies the T1100 as Toshiba’s first laptop; this is the company’s account of its history, not an independently established global ranking. Dynabook’s 2018 history
How the ownership changed
- June 2018: Toshiba and Sharp agreed to transfer 80.1% of Toshiba Client Solutions, Toshiba’s PC subsidiary. The transfer closed in October 2018.
- January 2019: Toshiba Client Solutions changed its name to Dynabook.
- June 30, 2020: Sharp exercised its call option for Toshiba’s remaining Dynabook shares.
- August 4, 2020: Toshiba announced that it had transferred the remaining 19.9% stake to Sharp, making Dynabook a wholly owned Sharp subsidiary. Toshiba’s transfer announcement
Did Toshiba stop making laptops?
Toshiba stopped owning the business; it did not announce that the business had closed. On August 11, 2020, Dynabook responded to what it called misleading media reports and said it would continue its PC and services work. The statement was a corporate assurance at that time, not a guarantee of present-day plans or service coverage. Dynabook’s August 2020 clarification

Dynabook’s current products should be understood as products of the successor company, not as Toshiba-owned laptops. Sharp described Dynabook as a producer of business laptops in an October 2020 overview; that dated description does not establish which models are currently sold or where they are available. Where the 35-year history comes from
Dynabook traces its laptop history to the T1100, launched by Toshiba in 1985. The company says Toshiba followed it with the Dynabook J-3100 SS001 in 1989, which it describes as the world’s first notebook computer with an A4-size form factor.
